Hi… I’ve been a percussionist for 25 years. Bill Caballero founded the Latin Jazz Jam Session in Down Town San Diego in between 9th and 10th on E st. in 1997. After a decade Voz Alta and the Latin Jam Sess is still going strong and is one of the scarce resources for Latin Music. We’re not talking about a bunch of Mexicans jumping around with cow boy hats and boots. You’ll never catch these musicians in the same room anywhere. Most of them are professional that are in different big bands that play around San Diego. For example Storm, Agua Dulce, B-side Players, Cumbia Machin, Cualli, Stranger the list goes on and on! Latin Jazz music is a fusion that was created in the United States by Dizzy in the 40’s and 50’s. Latin Jazz has African, Spanish, English & French Caribbean, Chinese, and Indian… well. Whatever what was left of it. We’re very fortunate that this music not only survived primitive times… but evolved from it. The Art by the way is super FreSH and RAW!!! LOVEIT! PRACTICEYOURRIGHT! GOVOZALTA!

Reminded me of being in New York among brilliant artists pursuing their passion and collaborating… the kind of place you’d stumble on in the Lower East Side and wander into because you heard something cool coming out of it. Oh Big Apple… how I miss thee. Lucky me for finding out at the last minute about Reg E. Gaines of «Bring In Da Funk, Bring in Da Noise» sharing some of his poetry, as well as his personal art collection last Saturday night at Alta Voz. One of the paintings was done by Russell Simmons’ brother. Reg, for being kinda legend in the spoken word arena; for being a two-time Tony award nominee; for being associated with a Tony Award winning Broadway play that rivaled RENT(… yes, THE Rent); for having appeared on the Jon Stewart Show, HBO’s Def Poetry and MTV Spoken Word Unplugged; for being not only a poet, but also an author, musician, playwright and director… he’s a really down to earth guy! And he was there. In Barrio Logan. In a small, but intimate, art/music gallery/space simply sharing stories about the stuff that adorns the walls of his own home and the history behind them… where else can you go in San Diego to get your gritty, street smart culture on? I’ve been starved for this kinda thing since moving back to the West Coast. Loved it, and will go back to check out the Latin Jazz jams on Thursday nights. Aren’t you tired of the«same olé, same olé»?? Mix it up, people… don’t be scared to head over to that neighborhood… check out the happs at Alta Voz Project!

Voz Alta is all about embracing the latin culture… you dont have to be latino to come and appreciate the heritage that is so much a part of San Diego. Great latin jazz on Thursday nights, been to a good poetry event and random art events. Got some great artists and nice folk.

This part of town need more places like this, Barrio Logan can be a sketchy part of town at night but you almost forget about all of the troubles this nieghborhood has when you walk by and hear some amazing music flowing through voz alta front door.

This is Latino/Hispano culture. Also not to be slept on if you like poetry and/or Latin Jazz. And especially since the National City Chicano Perk shut down and moved to Barrio Logan this is one of the great spots left.

Thursday night Latin Jazz is the real deal. Gotta love the impromptu nature and communal vibe of the musicians and performers. For first-timers, it can be totally intimidating because everyone seems to know each other– and they do. Sit back(or stand up and dance!) and enjoy it, popping between Landlord Jim’s for a drink(right next door) then back to Voz Alta for another set. Good stuff.

Voz Alta is more than an art gallery. San Diego IndyMedia holds events like Open Hack Night – they teach high tech skills to people interested in activism – and every other Monday they hold a rowdy Slam session, open mic that is. There’s a lot of other stuff going on here – film, book release parties and more – just check out their website for updates. As an art gallery, the place has been kinda slow moving. They just hired a new group that will be curating the shows. Hopefully, that will speed things up.
