Mission Valley business area on the Camino del rio south under the 805 is a lunch time dead spot with very few choices if you want a change of pace from your leftover lunch box from home, or if you have rushed out the door only to realize that you left your mundane muchies at home in your fridge…. So today when the Chicago hotdog lunch truck pulled up in front of my office I was super excited. We don’t get lunch trucks on our street. The 2 guys running the operation were super friendly, the truck was clean and smelled like you were a ball game(with out the obnoxious drunk fan behind you yelling in your ear) I got the brat with onions. The flavor was great! The bun was soft. The truck was about to close up and so got the last of the onions which were nice and crispy(the only real way to eat sautéed onions). The menu is simple and there isn’t a lot of choices but honestly, how many choices does one need to make on a lunch hour? I’ve been to plenty of lunch trucks that have WAY too many choices that make it so hard to decide and the lines get long and the crowd gets hangry! They do have 2BBQ sandwiches for those that don’t care for their meat to come in the link form. They don’t have a vegetarian option. But it’s a hotdog truck soooo. A suggestion for them if they wanted to make an option, do a saluted portobello mushroom. Either as a burger in place of the BBQ sandwich or cut in large sections like a hotdog and put that in the bun… Smothered the same as the Chicago dog. Portobello is really amazing when grilled or pan seared. And it doesn’t have a short shelf life like some other veggies do. They hold up really well un cooked for days if refrigerated. I only mention this because I know enough vegetarians to feel like it’s worth a shot. Def would eat here again. Another point worthy of mentioning is they accept CC’s and they don’t charge a fee to use it. It’s a bit pricy for a work lunch option but still worth it. Maybe drop the prices for«lunch time» on the weekdays by $ 1 – 2 to make it a bit more reasonable and attractive for the daily work lunch option rather than the normal higher pricing that you can charge for«special events». Call it the«corporate happy hour pricing». You expect to pay a bit more when at a street festival and you have those huger pangs that hit when the smell of the food trucks waft past your nose. But all in all– I’ll see you again tomorrow guys!

My first word for this Food Truck is WOW! My best friend lives in Chicago. I visit her often… partially because the food in Chicago is amazing. Especially all the street vendors and little Mom & Pop restaurants. So, when I came across this food truck in La Jolla last week, I had to try it. A M A Z I N G! After I ordered my Chicago Style Dog and sat on the grass I was immediately transported back to downtown Chicago. Neon green relish, pepper, mustard it had all the fixings in all the right combos. So, I ordered another one! Then, talking to the owner, HE’S FROMCHICAGO. Okay, well… it all makes sense now! The next day I had the Brat… smothered in perfectly sauteed onions and smeared with yellow mustard. This place transported me back to Chicago and I love them for it!
