With the current invasion of major chain restaurants in the small community of San Fernando, the local mom-​pop shops continue to struggle to maintain a profitable business. While nice and profitable, the newly opened Chipotle for example glimmers of tasty comida chatarra, but also lacks the soul and heart of fresh cooked tacos; or in this case, tortas.
The city of San Fernando has its fair share of Mexican food joints, but none offer a modern twist doused with personality like Torta El Toro. This specific location has been home to a few failed businesses. However, Torta El Toro has a distinctive charm that offers Tuesday street tacos for $ 1, and hefty sized tortas all week long. I have visited this place a few times now, and was greeted with a smile each time. To say that the service is friendly is an understatement.
During my first visit the owner handed me a large cup of delicious horchata for free. It was a comforting gesture that was well received and accompanied my azada and carnitas tacos in a way that my Nana would describe as, «delicias!». However, I would highly recommend trying one of the torta variations that are rich in taste and criminally cheap. My personal favorite is the Torta Rancho Atotonilco which includes steak, chorizo, beans, and nopales. I would also suggest trying the Torta Que Diabla which only becomes richer in taste with the incredible variations of salsa offered (extremely spicy, as they should be!)
Torta El Toro has quickly become one of my favorite hole-​in-​the-​wall restaurants. It is clean, friendly, and offers plenty of street parking. I like to think my taste in authentic Mexican food is slightly better than the average, so believe me that this is truly a hidden gem.
