AltSchool SOMA

Although I have never been in the classroom, I have seen the way the teachers communicate with the children on the playground and the way the children treat each other at this one site and I would never send my child to this school, I could get the same for free at a public school. Plus the administration side of things is completely disorganized.

i cannot overstate how fantastic this school is! the world would be a better place if all kids had an education like the one my daughter gets here.

The year before I heard about this school was completely tortuous for my son and I, he was in public school in a Spanish immersion school, a school known for great staff and communicative environment. Boy that first year was great for my little guys kindergarten but first grade turned into a battle of the first grade parents and the principal/​school board.(reasons of bullying at a no bully tolerant school, where the bully was protected while the rest of the first graders were left in FEAR! No exaggeration) well after November I pulled him out of the school completely didn’t want to leave my child to suffer another so many months. But of course it being a crime to not have a child enrolled in some type of school I decided to just finish off homeschooling.
It was hard I had no idea what came first, so we did our best and he learned to read in both English and Spanish he was doing so well in math, over all we got through it together. I was overwhelmed with a new born, teaching him, work and my own school but I just dreaded the thought of sending him to be hurt emotionally or physical again. I was searching for something better and came up empty handed. Facebook, I still laugh at the thought that the last place I’d ever look had the answer.
Reading the different approach they had for «school» talking with Cedar Life (homeschooling helper) about it made it an easy choice, it’s like homeschooling outside of home, everything I wanted put in one classroom. Self learning, group learning with all ages, small groups and more teachers, outside the box exploring. The only issue is could we afford such an amazing learning experience for him? Well no we couldn’t…but we applied anyway and he got his interview, was accepted instantly.
Financial aid plays a big part in giving him the love of learning back. And Alan has helped so much when my husband lost his job, I’m so grateful and the entire alt school staff gives families a wonderful experience because it’s not just about the student it’s about everyone.(if that makes sense)
What I mean is they aren’t just working with the student they are putting an effort to communicate weekly and talk openly about the classroom experience they provide the students. This is what I love an actual line of communication, not just the occasional parent teacher conference.
My s ok n loves it here it’s been so long since I’ve seen him so excited to go to school and come home talking about all the cool things he learned about.
