Great shop! The owner took time out of his day to give me a detailed opinion on a rare map. What I learned was the most valuable information that I had received and I been to 5 or 6 other sources who were not very interested in answering questions. It is so nice to find people who love what they do and are honest.

Was visiting the city and found this lovely bookstore. The owner was friendly and helpful, and I got a great history lesson while visiting with him and browsing the wonderful collection. Not too far from Union Square either.

In search of an obscure book about my ancestors who were immigrants to San Francisco in the 1800’s from the Pearl River Delta, my online research sent me to the Argonaut Book Shop. I’ve heard of the place but had never found a reason to visit until now. Not only did I find the book I was looking for, the owner is an expert on San Francisco, California, and American histories. His vast knowledge about San Francisco in the 1880’s, specifically the political difficulties of the Chinese, is amazing as well as his collection of books, maps, and obscure literature from the time. Anyone interested in the history of California can come in and browse or simply strike a conversation with one of the most interesting and knowledgeable locals in town. If I was a tourist, I’d rather spend an hour here than wandering around aimlessly in Union Square. Hitchcock had it right, this is exactly how a bookstore should be.

First, I must say that I am a fan of books, especially used books. However, the term«used books» does not even come close to doing justice to this remarkable book shop. If you are looking for books on virtually every subject, especially California history, this is that place. I just rented an apartment in San Francisco, and decided to walk the neighborhood. I stumbled upon the Argonaut Book Shop, and instantly fell in love! Three reasons to love this shop: 1) The owner is always there, and has a vast knowledge of virtually every book in the shop. Customer service is excellent! 2) Collectible, signed first editions are available. 3) Foremost Cal. bookstore on California and San Francisco history. What the heck, here is a fourth: Lots of old engravings, prints, and old maps perfect for framing. If you want a REAL bookstore, with COLLECTIBLE and MEMORABLE books, and want to own a piece of history, go here.

I can’t believe there is only one review for this place, it’s a San Francisco institution! Argonaut looks and feels just like an old bookstore should and the owner is extremely helpful and nice. Particularly strong on local history and also an interesting collection of old maps. The connection to Hitchcock’s Vertigo is fun, too.

Family owned and operated since 1941, this shop is a treasure trove of books on the history of California and the American West. Fans of Hitchcock’s Vertigo will appreciate the fact it was the inspiration for the film’s Argosy Book Shop.
