The partner of a work colleague found this place for a small group of friends. I tagged along since I was in the city and was enjoying the company. I was not particularly in the mood for Spanish but that changed pretty quickly once the delicious tapas started to show up. The shrimp was a real stand out, perfectly seasoned and just cooked just right. A special croquette also was particular appealing, reminded me of my trip to Spain about a year ago. While the tapas made me happy the paella was really special. We ordered two, one fairly standard seafood tapas with mussels and clams(quite tasty) and a unique paella made with squid ink pasta. The pasta was chopped into very small rice like segments so it looked a lot like black rice but it was definitely noodles. It was visually interesting but more than that tasty so sort of an all around win. The venue was nice, along that line of small restaurants on Belden that makes you feel a bit like you are on a European vacation. Great service too. Definitely a place I’d like to return.

Had lunch at B44 with a friend. We opted for the tapas. We tried 5 dishes and they ranged from OK to disappointing. The Patatas Bravas were ok, the Brisket Canelones were a huge disappointment, as were the Pincho Moruno! The dishes unfortunately reminded me of poor, reheated leftovers. The service was above average, if a bit distant. And, the space was nice. I like tapas and I wanted to like B44. But as things stand now, I would wave you off until the quality of the food improves! You don’t need the kind of disappointment they are serving!

The patio was full, but with the restaurant empty, service was quite slow. The food was just ok, there are better, more authentic tapas spots in the city for this kind of money. The alley has a cool vibe but yeah…

There’s nothing more to say other than it was a seriously meh meal. Everything was blah or even gross. The shrimp dish was so overcooked and disgusting it totally ruined the meal. I definitely wouldn’t come back.

Great paellas with many different options. Jamon iberico too! This is a colorful place that’s great to share family-style meals with friends. Awesome for lunch.

Nice, relaxed, laid back… Very helpful wait staff to make you feel comfortable… An excellent wine list to please the palate and I’m expecting some great food here in just a minute… Come and give it a try!

Returned with a party of four on a rainy Spring evening. The full package is why this place is splendid. The food is authentic, the décor is toned down, the location is very unique. I’m not going to discuss dollar value, or what we’ve eaten in Spain ourselves as it is completely irrelevant. B44 has authentic food and is a beautiful place to share a meal. Great wine selection, properly devised tapas and entrées, proper conversational setting. You don’t find subdued, hushed formal dining in Spain as a rule. You gather at a table with friends, you share dishes, you tell lies and laugh. B44 facilitates these norms. Highly recommended, notibly with a group of at least four. Private, intimate dining can be found elsewhere.

My friend and I came here for dinner on a Saturday night since some other restaurants nearby were fully booked. This place is tucked away on Belden, a quaint alley with several restaurants. The restaurant has outdoor seating with heaters and also indoor seating so there was no wait when we went, despite it being dinner rush hour. We ordered the paella barceloneta entrée, braised oxtail, and seared scallops appetizers to share. We also ordered sangria, which was one of the best I’ve had. The red wine was just strong enough, and it went down smoothly. It also wasn’t overly sweet. The paella barceloneta: amazing! The rice was filled with flavor and cooked till soft but not soggy at all. I enjoyed the tangy and savory taste of it and it had monkfish(which was super tender and chewy, probably the highlight), clams, mussels, and a few shrimp. The mussels and shrimp were just okay. Braised oxtail: Really, really tender. Definitely the best oxtail I’ve ever had. The wine sauce was also delicious. It comes with garlic mashed potatoes, which complements the oxtail nicely. Seared scallops: The scallops were huge, juicy, and super soft. The plate also comes with mussels, clams, and shrimp. The shrimp was better than those in the paella dish. The mussels had a pretty strong fishy taste, which I didn’t like and it seemed like were either not that fresh or slightly undercooked. The service was good. Our waiter was attentive even though we were sitting outside, and kept refilling our water. They also serve bread and olive oil while you’re waiting for the food.

Overall, A-ok. Service was excellent! Our waiter was so kind. He didn’t hover, but was very prompt. The food was hit or miss. The bread they put out was pretty stale. And unfortunately, so were the churros. I was really rooting for that dessert too! The roasted vegetables were ok. More oily than I expected. But the calamari was delicious! And so is their house sangria. I’ll definitely be back for that!

The food here is hit or miss, but the service is nice. I came with an old boss on Monday night, and we basically had the place to ourselves. She’s not into super fishy smelling things so we went with the calamari, shrimp ceviche, and lamb skewers. The calamari looked like it was breaded nicely, but tasted bland inside and out. The calamari was rubbery and the breading was tasteless. The aioli sucked too. I ate it anyway though as I hate wasting food. I did enjoy the ceviche thoroughly though – it is on the sweeter side which caters well to my palate. The lamb was another miss as the sauce they put on top of it was not complimenting the flavor the lamb well. I can see why it is not crowded(besides the fact it is in an alley). There are better tapas bars to go to!

My coworker loves this place and I do think this place is a great place to meet up. Portions were pretty small. Paella B44 and squid ink pasta were good. I liked the octopus appetizer/small place. Potatas bravas were really good. Ceviche was medicore and I would commend La Mar or elsewhere for it.

Well, it was Super Bowl 50 Weekend and every place we tried was closed(I’m guessing due to crowds and proximity to the weekend’s festivities). A few quick turns after surfacing from BART and we found this quaint side street with all these restaurants. We viewed a few menus and decided tapas might set the evening off right. We were seated under a nice awning right off the walkway area. The awning actually trapped a bit of warmth once the overhead heaters came on(temps can dip quickly in SF) and created a nice ambiance. We started off with the sangria which was just about half past glad we aren’t driving, lol. Then we decided to order a few things off the menu which were all pretty good. The only I probably would order with reserve next time were the mussels. It could have just been an off night. I’m from the East Coast and always thought sea food tasted different here on the West Coast. This was a bit beyond that«difference». Despite the peculiar taste with the mussels, I definitely would try this place again and it’s easy to get to — just off the Montgomery BART stop.

Service was VERY slow. Food was decent, though a little salty and oily. The seafood paella had four tiny mussels on them. No shrimp, not nothing.

I would have given 4 stars if it were not for the service. Total disconnect. Who was our server? Good question. She kept disappearing and thank to the busboys we got a second glass of wine, more bread, etc. Too bad because the food is excellent and well prepared. Won’t consider again. I’m paying to be treated well and to make me feel good. If you must, go for take out!

This is one of our favorite places en the city for Catalan food. The paella negra(black rice) it’s excellent, fideua(Don’t remember how to spell it, its like a paella with angel hair or close) to die for. Actually, everything we had was great.

I am surprised by the low reviews, I think this place should be rated much higher. Came here during restaurant week with my girlfriends and we all had a fantastic time. The drinks see quite strong, which is a plus. The food was absolutely amazing. A little on the salty side, but otherwise full of flavor. I loved every single dish I got. I give the food and drinks a 5, but had to take one star off for lack of service. It was a very long meal, a lot of waiting. And it was hard to flag down our waitress when we wanted more drinks. But they we’re very busy, every table was filled. Would definitely visit again and get their paellas next time.

I came here for lunch with my friend during restaurant week and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the paella, it was absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend it. I also had the Spanish garlic soup, which I found quite thin but perhaps just not to my taste. The calamari salad that my friend had looked quite delicious though. However, be prepared for slow service as the restaurant was severely understaffed and service was quite tardy as a result.

Decent food that was slightly overpriced. Service was lackluster. If the service was on point, I wouldn’t have minded paying what I did for the food. We left before ordering entrees because of how long it took our server to acknowledge us. The cocktails and food were damn tasty. If you don’t mind waiting a while(we were there for over an hour when we decided to just get an entrée somewhere else) this place is great.

Food — 3 stars. Service — 0 star. Restaurant was half full but we had to wait 20 minutes for our drinks. Had to ask for refills and had to wait at least 5 – 10 min on every request. Food was OK, I’ve had better paella. Not impressed at all.

Poor service. Not recommended. I had asked more than 3 times for water but never got it, then I had to wait another 15 mins for a check. Do I have to ask everyone for it as I did with the water… The food wasn’t that good, wanted to order couple more dishes to try but no one ever stopped by and check up on my groups(7 of us).

Terrible service, freezing temperatures at INDOOR seating. Good food. I have worked in food service and am very understanding when service is slow, or the waiters hit snafus. A sign of the merit of this restaurant should have hit me when all surrounding restaurants were full, and this one was empty. A second indicator of the merit of this restaurant should have come when I saw the cheap, leopard print carpet inside amidst the more modern décor– totally baffling aesthetic choice. Waited forever for every necessary interaction with the waiter, in a non-busy lunch period. Ate and enjoyed our tapas selections. Froze to death in our coats. By the time I left, my toes were numb, absolutely no exaggeration. I will not go back here. I can get good tapas in a comfortable setting.

No complaints for B44, I love it! My last meal on this earth would be paella, and they do it so so right. Get the signature B44 paella, everything is perfect. Came here with a friend after work and we took advantage of the happy hour menu, you can’t beat the prices. Sangria was on point as well, and the service was exceptional and personalized. Belden place is a great hidden gem to go on a mini food tour, make B44 your first stop!

We ran into B44 in an ally that had so many different types of food but nothing that we wanted. Until I saw someone eating a giant paella, I knew this is where we had to eat. We also brought our dog– so we had to eat at a place with outdoor seating. B44s paellas were delicious. They were a bit salty, but If you squeezed lemon over it– it was perfect.

This place has not changed very much. This is a nice Spanish restaurant. I tried the Arròs Negre, the squid ink paella. It was awesome. It was cooked perfectly. It was flavorful. The House-made Sangria was also good, sweet and not too strong. The Crema Catalana was fruity and creamy.

I love this place. Thanks to Geronima(sp) and Nicole for making a party of one welcome. I had pretty much the perfect ahi on lentils coupled w an Albariño. Service is again exceptional. You must sit outside regardless of the weather. Still one of my favorites in the City. So many choices. Next one the menu tonight … Churrros! Enjoy

The following will be a description of my first experience at B44. Me and my squad of 9 other folks decoded to grub here after the VMWorld tradeshow. We knew that this spot was known for tapas, so we avoided all other plates. Since there were so many mouthwatering items on the tapas menu, we ordered all 17 tapas plates to start. ***Bomb Shit Alert!!*** The garlic shrimp, blood sausages, oxtail, quail, scallops, fried potatos, mussels, pepper stuffed crabs, and ceviche was on POINT!!! We ended up ordering 2x portions of the selected items. Solid ambience and the outdoor experience was great! Sangria and Old Fashioned drinks were very refreshing and crept up nicely as well. Overall, great service and a perfect location in a hidden alleyway of solid magic. I highly recommend this spot for a party event or romantic evening where you’ll end up getting lucky thereafter. Cheers foodies!

This was a nice Spanish tapas place the sangria was the best thing on the menu and the paella. I also enjoyed the patatas bravas which are good at every Spanish restaurant. I also enjoyed the ambiance and the feel of the place. There was an outdoors area which was so refreshing to see. It was so crowded for a Thursday night. The fact it was in the financial district was nice as well just busy and with really cool people. The food was ok though.

Fun place for delicious tapas! My girls and I had a great time here. We enjoyed all that we ordered. The atmosphere of this restaurant is fun! Located in an alley, you can dine on the patio or inside. I imagine restaurants in Spain would feel and look like this.
