Ever wanted to explore a very cool bookstore filled with rare and expensive leather bound books? If so, I would encourage you to swing by this gallery. Located in the heart of San Francisco’s galley district, Brick Row is a small one room shop with high ceilings and books in book shelves from floor to ceiling. When I visited, the gentlemen at the desk was very nice and didn’t mind a guy in his gym clothes browsing around. I am not a huge bibliophile but am a voracious reader and respect collectors of old books. Only a few of the titles were familiar but I have no doubt there is a large market for these books in general. While the books were old, they were in good condition. Worth swinging by if you are in the area.

The Brick Row Book Shop is one of the most respected book firms in the United States, specializing in first and rare editions in English printed between approximately 1550 and 1900, however this is not a general used bookstore like Green Apple Books in SF or Moe’s Books in Berkeley. Brick Row’s stock are high-end items for high-end buyers. Literature, literary biography, history and some science are probably the most common subjects. Their selection of literature printed between 1600 and 1800 is one of the most extensive in the SF Bay Area. First and early editions of books by John Milton, Jonathan Swift, Henry Fielding, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Walt Whitman are frequently in stock, just to name a few. They also have a small section of books on religion. But don’t expect to find books priced less than $ 100. Most of their stock ranges in price from $ 100 to $ 100,000 with many books priced between about $ 250 to $ 600. These books are very rare and/or desirable for the discerning collector and/or scholar but probably inappropriate for the casual reader. The proprietor is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable concerning many different rare and important editions of these books. If you desire a 17th-century copy of Plutarch’s Lives, Brick Row might have it or know where you can acquire it. Brick Row also has large tables making it very easy to peruse these tomes. a feature I have not seen in almost any other shop. FYI, if you want simply a Modern Library reading copy of a title, Green Apple Books or Moe’s Books are where you want to be.
