Chocolate Covered

This is probably the best chocolate place in the city. Be warned that it is expensive, but for that cost you are getting not only a delicious treat but the expertise of the staff who are extremely knowledgeable and can make fantastic recommendations for any palette. The selection they have will wow you.

A small, charming neighborhood specialty chocolate shop with a wide selection from around the world. I’m slowly getting into the world of extra dark chocolate and first came in looking for the Domori Il Criollo 100% bar. On the first visit, I only bought that bar and paid with a credit card which they were totally cool with despite it being a small order.
If you’re looking for staple chocolate bars, it’ll of course be pricier than Whole Foods but the long tail selection and expertise are worth shelling out a little extra more. The owner, Jack, and lady working the counter were knowledgeable about the sourcing, origin, dietary constraints, flavor profiles, you name it. I went in again to try out some other 100% bars and they let me sample a few before I decided on two to buy.
L’amourette has become my new favorite chocolate maker and was pleased to find they have a 100% bar that was smooth and more subdued than other dark chocolate bars that are more acidic and fruity, probably because of all the cocoa butter. Jack said that they made it because he told them too and sure enough, it was on the back. So I have them to thank for finding it and its existence in the first place.
I’m grateful that a small businesses like this with focus on providing personable, guided service is still alive and kicking in my neighborhood. I’m sure this will be a regular spot I’ll frequent when looking for a special treat for myself or to gift.

Really nice chocolate shop, a large variety of chocolate bars from various local and international brands. They will let you sample some chocolates if you really want to. The coconut curry chocolate, seriously, was A+. As other reviews have mentioned the owner makes tins covered with various SF street names to put the chocolate in. If you want to make a gift box but don’t have much spare time you can call ahead and have them create a gift set to go.

Such a cool place. He has every street in SF on a tin and if he doesn’t have it he will make it for you! Oh. and he has wonderful chocolates as well.

In sweet Noe Valley it’s tough to not score a sweet treat. Artistically dialed in and delicious as you’d expect. Nice to bring these on the road as hostess gifts. authentic SF charm.

If you love chocolate and are interested in exploring the varieties of sources and producers around the world, this store is a must when in San Francisco. The owner is a treasure trove of knowledge about chocolate and is usually present and willing to share advice and information. One of my favorite shops in San Francisco.

The street names of San Francisco in small containers caught my attention. Most of the chocolates here are either made locally in San Francisco or in other parts of the Bay Area, or imported from Europe. Aside from my fascination of the interiors of this chocolate, I was impressed at the lady in the counter when she explained the different types, brands, and the origin of the chocolate at the store. She was very friendly accomodating the entire time and didn’t mind when I took several pictures of the store.
The only negative comment that I can think of this store is that all of their products are pricey.

This a chocolate lover’s heaven. There is such a huge selection of chocolates that you’ll find yourself wanting to buy an unnecessary (but really necessary) amount of chocolate. They carry chocolate made from different parts of the world as well as chocolate made locally. The owner, Jack, is very friendly and knowledgeable about all the chocolate in his store! He’ll give you samples if you ask. We easily spent at least an hour browsing and picking out what to buy.
For all you hip people that are into Compartes, they have a good selection to choose from. I really enjoyed the donuts and coffee one which tasted just like donuts and coffee (partly due to the donut bits in the chocolate bar). I also liked the lavender one from Dolfin and jasmine one from The Tea Room.
I totally recommend coming here. I’m definitely coming here again and stocking up on chocolate the next time I’m in San Francisco. You’ll probably leave with a bunch of chocolate and considerably less money in your pocket, but you’ll be so much happier (this is from experience).

Incredible selection of chocolates! Chocolates from all over the world! And just CHOCOLATE! YUM! Staff is super helpful and friendly in guiding you to what suits your chocolate needs! Tre magnific! Loved the locally made chocolates including the lavender sea salt caramels!

If you need a 4.5 oz. chocolate & peanut butter cup, Chocolate Covered is the place to go.
(And yes, you DO really need it.)

Wide variety of artisan, organic & specialty chocolate curated by a very knowledgeable owner. Spent about 40 minutes in the store gaining knowledge of the wide variety of chocolates he carries in this small wonder. What a unique find in Noe Valley! Walked out stocked up for a couple months (or less!) and will definitely come back to see what’s new :)

I just love Chocolate Covered. In fact I went to San Francisco specifically to go here, and other places! But this place was a must.
The variety of chocolate bars and chocolates found here is just out of this world awesome. FYI there wasn’t one bar that I mentioned that wasn’t on their shelf. p. s. They have a more than decent selection of 100% Chocolate bars!
Their knowledge of chocolate is most excellent. So if you love good chocolate, and are visiting/​live in San Francisco, make sure to stop in here, you will not be disappointed. I was so happy I did!

Hands down the best chocolate shop in SF!
You can get all kinds of chocolate here except the boring kinds they sell at grocery stores.
Single origin bar? 99%? 100%? Sugar free but sweetened with milk lactose? Vegan? With nuts, caramel, spices, or fruits? Truffles? Good for presenting? Good for valentines, Easter, and any other occasion? Local or from Oregon or from Europe?
They have it all! And more importantly they love to help you out, whether it’s the owner himself or his other staff. And if you come in on a quiet time, they have endless samples of bars for you to try. One day I wanted to try some 99−100% bars and I must’ve eaten like 10 samples before I bought two!
Beware though, you pay for the gourmet experience. Come with a deep pocket and an open attitude, you’ll be rewarded!

From the outside you see a small dark window with lots of decorative tin cans. On the inside is so much chocolate you never knew you wanted. They give samples and are very knowledgable. I loved the tea chocolate!

The last brand of Chocolate I would give a friend seeking to try American chocolate Hersheys. Why? Because Hersheys and snickers and twix are all mass produced, watered down versions of true American chocolate. Chocolate Covered has a warm exterior, a bit unassuming, but the inside is unprecedented in my experience with chocolate shops. Jack, the owner, has put in a great deal of work collecting chocolates from all over the world. He is very knowledgeable and will even recommend something based on your personality alone! Jack has got everything but Hersheys, from French chocolates to German to Spanish. If you’re a cocoa head, ask about the 100% cocoa. They actually have more 100%s than 99s!
Dark chocolate fans:
If you want something local, try out tchos line. They also have some other SF made darks, plenty to choose from.
If you REALLY love dark chocolate, ask for Blankart’s 95%. It’s from Spain and it’s by far the best dark chocolate I’ve had (it’s comparable to Green and Blacks 85% if you’ve had that, BUT BETTER).
As for price, the chocolates are a bit pricey, but chocolate definitely falls into the category of «you get what you pay for». This is a great place to get a loved one some really great chocolate, take back some for the family after a SF visit, or simply have some for yourself. Indulge Unilocalers, and bon appetit!

Best selection of artisanal chocolates I’ve ever seen. A chocoholic’s paradise. Cool kitschy decoration.

We’ve all been there: It’s your friend’s birthday tomorrow and your other friend’s house-​warming party tonight. You have no present and you feel like a terrible friend.
Stop procrastinating, go to Chocolate Covered, and get them a chocolate box decorated with something of emotional value to them. Example:
1) Your best friend’s birthday is tomorrow and you have nothing. You used to live together on Washington Street: Duh, «Washington Street» chocolate box.
2) Your in-​laws are visiting the city from overseas: Easy, «Street they stayed at» box filled with American chocolate.
3) Your friend’s favorite restaurant is «Leopold’s»: «Leopold’s» chocolate box.
4) Your friends just moved to Jones Street and you don’t have a present for their housewarming… I think you see where I’m going here.
The owner of the shop is incredibly pleasant and helpful and though a box of chocolate here will cost you more than elsewhere, the customer service, quality and admiration of your friends is more than worth it.

When I first saw this place it was from San Francisco’s Finest Unilocal Queen Cherylynn N. and after reading her 5 star review
I knew I had to contact them and find out if they sell any vegan chocolates. After speaking with Jack (the owner), he mentioned he was getting a shipment of Vegan Truffles. Yes, I said it «vegan truffles». Not dark chocolate bars that every chocolatier always carries and passes off as the only vegan chocolate they sell. He was actually getting truffles. I thought I died and went to heaven. I was so excited.
I was in constant communication with Jack through email. Letting me know when the product would arrive and when it arrived as he would say «the bird has landed». I wasn’t sure what type of truffles he ordered but when he told me it was Missionary Chocolates from Portland, OR. I would have given him a hug over the phone. When my honey and I went to Portland, this was one of the places we were not able to go, due to the location.
Once the «bird landed», he emailed me right away and told me he would keep some on hold. I quickly text my honey to see if he can pick some up. Sure enough, he went within the hour. Thanks Babe!
When he arrived home, I was so surprise. He bought an entire box (5 truffles) @ $ 18 and 3 additional truffles that were sold individually. The truffles were not your average size. They put See’s or Godiva to shame, twice the size. When I bit into the chocolate hearts and the peppermint, it was a total ORGASMIC experience. AWWW!!! I didn’t even want to share. (best believe my honey got some that night and I ain’t talkin about chocolate)
So, with that last thought! If you are looking for ANY type of chocolate, look no further head down to Covered Chocolate. If I could give them more than a 5 star, I would. Great customer service, quality and price! Can’t beat that!

Holy moley… the holy grail of all chocolate bars you may be looking for from around the world. Truly wonderful shop that you could peruse for hours. The owner is very helpful and knowledgeable and figures out what you’re looking for, then provides samples in that realm to help you choose. The boy may have offended him a little as we discussed Oakland, and Bittersweet, and the fact that the owner’s friend, who started Bittersweet, went to Hawaii to start up a new chocolate venture — growing beans to bars — and the teen said «oh — Lonohana?» And I said «oh — you liked their bar, right?» and the teen said «no — I didn’t like it.» Way to go dude. To be fair, he’s only tried the ‘Ele’Ele bar and is open to trying others. Doink.
Give yourselves some time here, as there is much to be seen.

The obvious half of the shop is the chocolate and trust me, the owner is well versed in all things chocolate. If you’re a chocoholic into artisanal and more unique chocolate purveyors, this is heaven on earth. You will find that perfect gift for the person in your life who loves high quality chocolate, which should be savoured slowly
The unexpected half of the shop are the unique small tin giftboxes, all handmade by the owner. The photos of streets signs and SF sights are taken by the owner and turned into the cute boxes
So, for a birthday present, what about a tin of high end chocolate treats in a handmade tin gift box with the street sign with some meaning for your loved one?
