Embarcadero Historical Walk

I’m a sucker for local artisans so I enjoyed the little arts fair across from the ferry building on Market. An artist I spoke with said everyone there has to produce their own goods. We went on a Friday and saw about 20 stalls but he said there would be about twice that on Saturday. The ferry building smelled so yummy! We enjoyed lunch on the benches on the water in front of the ferry slip. We walked down the historic walk a while on the most beautiful day! Don’t forget to stop into TCHO chocolate factory for a free sample!

Neato history and it is free. If you have nothing else to do learn a little bit about the area in which you are standing. It is always nice to be standing on top of history, so you might as well understand exactly what you are standing on top of.

The poems are pertty cool, but the main thing is the view and the fresh air.
Perfect place to light one up and take a girl. Light her up as well.

Looking for something free to do AND historical? Take a stroll along the waterfront and learn a little bit about the history of The City. Me, I jumped off the MUNI at Embarcadero and veered right at the Ferry Bldg. I didn’t walk on the side of the piers because the plaques are on the west side.
I love the fact that they have pictorial stops explaining certain aspects of the area. Mind you, the shoreline used to be up several blocks. I was ‘walking on water’ really. All these places had such different names. Cowell Wharf was one. This area was a hard-​working-​hard-​drinking rough and tumble place in its days. Don’t forget to look down as there are plaques every so often which mark the spot of a Gold rush ship buried below. Such as the William Gray, a stores vessel, long ago abandoned by gold seekers. This plaque says there’s over 40 ships buried below the surface around downtown. a tour guide told me a few days ago there are 400.hmm.
Lots of businesses and condos now crowd the walk. there is Levi’s Park, a beautiful, almost secluded spot to sit and have lunch or just contemplate. There are some beautiful fountains along the way as well. It really doesn’t take that long to get to the bustling Pier 39 area either. There’s a view every step of the way!
