Noël Santos has done my taxes for over a decade. I have worked for large corporations while at the same time running my own small art business and through it all he has offered exceptional advice and always empowered me to make the best decisions for the health of my long-​term financial future. In 2011, I bought a historic multi-​family home in St. Louis, MO. I figured I could rent it out to pay for its eventual restoration. Restoring an old home is on my bucket list. To do so, I decided to liquidate an IRA. I know, I know. Penalties, taxes, whatever. Since I was diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer at 41 years old, I really don’t give a flying Fig Newton about «retirement.» But, I digress.
After liquidating the IRA, I knew I was going to be hit with some major taxes. I thought expenses from the rental could help offset some of that. I still expected to pay a lot.
Being completely naïve and believing the commercials, I walked into my local H&R Crock (2012). They had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Seriously. It is true. The same chick who does your nails could be moonlighting as a tax preparer. Nothing against nail technicians, but I don’t think they’re equipped to handle LLCs and out-​of-​state rental properties. Unless they are CPAs in disguise. No such luck.
After I got absolutely no help, my partner called Noël because he is her friend’s mom’s CPA. I thought, «Crap, this is going to cost me some appendages.» I was desperate at that point. Did I mention this was one week before April 15^th? No? OK, so now you understand the desperation.
Best thing that ever happened to me… tax wise.
Not only was I able to avoid paying taxes, he got my ass a REFUND. How the hell he made that happen, I don’t know. The refund paid his fees, and I had $ 400 left to boot!
I’m a believer. I don’t know if I’ll get another tax miracle like that again, especially since the multi-​family has officially become a money pit. I do know that I’m sticking with Noël.
Don’t hesitate. The guy knows his stuff.
