Dr. Erik Hansen and his entire staff at UCSF are amazing. I am 50 miles from UCSF, but my health is worth the drive and time to see him. He did a total hip arthroplasty on me. I have had hardly any pain at all and was treated with respect by every single person. The nurses at UCSF were also wonderful. The entire experience was great. Dr. Hansen did the anterior approach, so none of my muscles were cut. This was very important, as I work on my feet for hours and look forward to going back soon.

I am not a big review writer, but wanted to write one for Dr. Hansen. I had a total hip done just over a year ago. I am younger than most patients and very into hiking, biking, wake boarding, etc. My hip just wore out, not sure why. But my desire to stay active did not. I met with a number of doctors as I tried to determine the best one for me, and the best product to use. I looked at posterior and anterior approach, metal vs ceramic vs plastic, and even looked at the Birmingham. In the end, I decided on Dr. Hansen because of the products that he uses, the anterior approach and his reputation. I couldn’t be happier. He did a great job. I was in the hospital only one day(you should not assume this will happen), never even purchased the pain medicine, and have healed really quickly. My hip will never be what it was before, but I am back to doing almost all activities — with the exception of running. I would definitely recommend Dr. Hansen and UCSF.

This review is LONG overdue. My husband(who does not Unilocal) has been having some issues with his knees. Dr. Hansen was recommended to us by a someone we know. Not only is he a compassionate and kind doctor, his approach/solution was perfect for my husband! If I can even give 10 stars to a doctor, he TOTALLY deserves it!

Dr. Eric Hansen is a rising star in the field of orthopaedic surgery. Though not as heralded as his older colleagues in the knee and hip replacement section of the UCSF Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgery Department, I chose Dr. Hansen because of his preference for the direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery. This is a relatively new technique in which the hip joint is approached from the front rather than the side or posterior of the hip. The approach allows for smaller incisions and for the hip to be accessed without cutting or detaching major muscles. The result, among others, is that patients almost always have significantly shorter rehabilitation times after surgery. On the first day after surgery, I was up and taking a few steps with a walker. Before I was released from the hospital on the second day after surgery, I had already taken two laps around the perimeter of the hospital, and had walked up and down two flights of stairs. I walked into my home that day with the use of a walker, but have not used it since. On the sixth day after surgery, my physical therapist encouraged me to take my dog for a walk. We took a one half mile walk that day, we have repeated that walk every day since, and I have not used an assistive device of any kind. It is now the eighth day after surgery, and though I am in some pain, it is controlled by medications. I am having a hard time believing the progress I have made. I believe I owe it all to the surgical skills of Dr. Hansen, and to the efforts of the excellent staff at UCSF. I also feel compelled to comment on Dr. Hansen’s «bedside manner.» His warm, friendly and informative approach has been greatly appreciated by me and my family. My wife and I were both impressed by the amount of time Dr. Hansen spent with each of us, both before and after the surgery, to make sure that we were comfortable with all that laid ahead of us. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to Dr. Hansen for all that he has done. I give him the highest recommendation available.
