The glasses are good, that’s true. But you need to go over the bill with them several times before agreeing. The clerk told me that my pair would cost $ 800, and in our conversation, I thought that was before my insurance. Ok, my bad, I recalled a similar pair I bought a couple of years ago with the same insurance cost me a bit less than half that, so I thought, sure, $ 400. Nope. That price was WITH my insurance. That’s ridiculous — the frames and lenses are not all that fancy. You’re paying here for the rent on Castro St. Spend even a few moments looking and you can get the same pair for much less money elsewhere. The name is correct: they GOTCHA.

Last month, when I went in to have my sunglasses repaired and select some new frame options, I learned Tim is no longer with this business. Sad. Still, we always liked Eye Gotcha and saw no real reason to go elsewhere. So today I schlepped across town with my freshly minted prescription to find them… closed. Which is an everyday occurrence from 3 to 4 PM. Nap time, perhaps. Because being open from noon to 7 is so exhausting? Whatever. Their business, their rules.
They have lost us as customers though. We generally bought a pair each year. There are too many other options in this city if you’re willing to shell out the cash for quality eyewear. Only catch is, the service needs to be there, which it appears to have diminished somewhat at Eye Gotcha.

This place is as good as it gets. I have never had a bad experience here and Dr. Haney is awesome. I could elaborate but you really just need to visit them and see for yourself.

Dr. Haney gives the best eye exams I have ever had. EVER. She’s extremely thorough and explains things that I never knew in all my bespectacled decades. She makes me feel not so bad about not being able to read all those tiny blurry letters. She is even excellent with small children. Not only that, I’m asked on a daily basis where my beautiful sunglasses came from.
Dr. Haney, the lovely Eva and the whole team at Eye Gotcha is the best ever. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

I’ve been coming to this place for about 5 years for all my (rather demanding) eyeglass needs. They sell only the finest quality (and stylish) frames and lenses and they stand behind their work. You can’t get any better than this.

This is only my third ‘Yelp’ in 5 years… but this group deserves a shout out. I hate going to opticians and optometrists. My eyes are difficult to refract and frames difficult to fit. I brought in a new prescription to Eye Gotcha from For Eyes (where I’d gone for 18 years). Lyndsey Ghiocchi (Optician) set me up with two pair of frames that looked very nice on me — so I bought both. When they arrived, Lyndsey adjusted them so that they fit perfectly (not too tight, no slippage, level)…which has never happened to me before. However, within hours of leaving the store, I realized my new lens prescription was wrong… nauseatingly wrong. I made a new optometry appointment with Eye Gotcha’s Susan Haney (OD) who spent an HOUR with me and determined that the prescription from For Eyes was way off (both axes rotated by 8 degrees!). And, even though the mistake was made by For Eyes, Eye Gotcha made NEW lenses for both of my frames at no cost! I was astounded. I just picked up my glasses today — and it’s the best refraction I have had in years! I am SO grateful.

Class act all the way. Dr Gregg is great to work with & has an awesome sense of humor. Bill & all of the other employees were friendly & helpful, I look forward to using Eye Gotcha again in the future!

Love this place. They offer helpful and honest opinions when picking out glasses. Also had the most thorough and informative eye exam of my live. Definitely recommend them over any other place in the city!

Went in today to order some new glasses for my increasingly problematic eyes. I was helped right away by Emmett, a super knowledgeable and friendly eye care professional. He guided me through the ins and outs of what would work with my complicated prescription and complicated face and called me shortly after I left with a question that we forgot to cover (as he said, because we were having too much fun.) I can’t wait for my cool new glasses to arrive. Overall, a very pleasant experience.

Great frames — solid service and the best OD in SF!

I have to say that is eyeglass shop offers a spectacular choice of glasses and a staff that goes well above and beyond. They really know how to pick out a pair of glasses for you and give you all your options. They are all extremely knowledgeable. I am many pairs of glasses that I purchased from them. Thanks for making me look so good!

Eva and the staff are very professional and always pleasant to deal with. I could not be more pleased with my new IC Berlin frames as well as the the job their lens craftsman did with my prescription. Highly recommend

I’ve been seeing Dr. Gregg Higuchi for years and and couldn’t be happier with his care. His professionalism, expertise and great sense of humor always makes me look forward to my appointments. Also, his team of opticians are all fantastic and extremely professional. Personally I’ve worked with Aimee and Eva for the all my glasses needs. They are fantastic and I wholeheartedly recommend this practice for anyone looking for excellent eye care and shopping for eyewear.

Came here because my previous eye doctor botched my last prescription. AND they are a VSP provider that carries Anne et Valentin eyewear. When I go out of network VSP gives me something ridiculous toward the frame, like $ 50 which is nothing once you decide to get cool glasses. And now that I’m past 50 and need progressives — OUCH!
The opticians were trendy and friendly. The doc competent. The glasses weren’t ready overnight but on schedule with what they promised.
Will definitely return for new eyewear.

EVERY time I call, whether it’s about an exam, a question about my contact lenses, or an issue with my glasses, the receptionist pushes me to get a new contact lens exam saying the law requires it.
That is patently untrue. The California law states «The expiration date of a contact lens prescription
shall not be less than one to two years from the date of issuance»
Dr. Higuchi saw me one of those times anyway. When I called about an appointment today, the receptionist said they don’t have a record of my last contact lens prescription AT ALL and they won’t see me unless I agree to a new exam, even though I called about eye irritation — not related at all to how well I see or don’t with the contact lenses prescribed and fitted by EyeGotcha.
It’s a shame because Dr. Higuchi is great, as are most of the staff. However, I’m not having this argument anymore. Leaving them.

THE best selection of awesome frames! I wish I had a gazillion $$$ so I could afford them all! The folks that work there are super friendly and helpful, too!
If you want funky frames, this is the place for you!

Came to Eye Gotcha last week and again this week for an eye exams and a fitting.
The exam was really great. I forgot the optometrists name but she was an absolute pleasure. She got a ton of joy out of explaining the science behind the methods and technology she was using. I could have stayed another hour just talking about the fascinating world of optometry.
The folks that help you out after are pros. They’re very nice and helpful.
They also have an awesome selection of glasses! I found exactly what I was looking for.

These guys get 5 stars based on the friendliness of the service throughout my experience and the eye exam. Everyone was very friendly from checking in, to my actual eye exam, to Tim’s patience pulling together a ton of glasses for me to try and the folks figuring out my insurance options. I was especially impressed with the eye exam in that Dr. Higuchi was extremely thorough, conducted the usual tests and a couple of others, did not pawn me off on an assistant but did all of the tests himself, and took extra effort to explain everything really patiently. He also was able to examine me for contact lens and glasses at the same time, which was much appreciated. The frame selection is pretty hip and funky — probably too hip and colorful for me — but it’s a plus that it’s not your usual run of the mill frames. Unilocalers did not steer me wrong.
* A quick update — we had some insurance mixup and Eva the manager was also super helpful in getting that ironed out. Really impressed with the consistent high quality of service here.

I went to another optometrist and she could not believe the prescription that I got for both my contacts and glasses. They were so off that she said she would personally write a letter to make sure I got a refund for anything that I spent at Eye Gotcha.
They even made a typo on my contacts that were so different than my glasses that my new optometrist said it could have caused damage if worn long term and even gotten me in an accident while driving.
Heck, I could not even have sex in those contacts from Eye Gotcha.
