I recently got a large print framed here, and the experience was great. Gary was very friendly and helpful in helping me decide how to do it, and the results are terrific. While we were deciding on how to frame it, we discussed double vs. single matting, and I decided to go with single to save a few bucks, against Gary’s advice. When I came to pick it up, he had doubled matted the print at no extra charge(he knew I wanted it, and it was just about money)! Now that’s above and beyond. Also, the art hanging in the store is really nice. Some terrific pieces for sale — or just to look at while you’re there for your framing.

I needed just about everything in a frame re-done from my college days. Some just had to go, but the ones I wanted to keep, well the slight waves and water marks on the mats didn’t really look like character anymore, they just looked cheap. I priced re-framing larger posters and artwork at a number of places, including online discount shops. The minimum for what I wanted was like $ 350 per piece. GULP! I can think of a LOT of things I could do with the $ 4K it would cost to re-do all this framing. So, I turned to Unilocal! It seems that Gary used to run his own place out here in the Sunset and recently migrated to Excelsior to his brother’s shop. The BF and I went out there to take a look, pick out mats and agree on minimalist frames. Gary was AWESOME! He walked us through suggestions, let us know what he could do, recommended things based on our taste rather than price and finished it in a week. The price was less than half what I’d found anywhere else and the quality was excellent. Besides getting what I’d hoped, the Fung Tai Gallery is a fun place to wander around and see the Chinese art. If you need it framed, come here. It’s not slick, it’s not a chain, and it’s all good.

Master Framer Gary Cheung of G. A. Framing and Gallery has consoldiated his business with Fung Tai, operated by his brother. Richmond’s loss is the Excelsior’s gain. Gary is a boon to starving artists. I realized at the last minute(of course) that my existing mats were the wrong size and called him in a panic. He made three acid-free mats for 16×2 frames for $ 5 each, ready in three hours. Tai Fung is more than twice the size of the old G.A. space – the better to appreciate the large collection of original Chinese artworks for sale. And Gary is a warm and generous spirit, always happy to talk about art. My mom’s collection of prints from Occupied Japan are all reproductions, and not worth much, he said, but still… «Beautiful!»
