Very interesting gallery where you less expect it. My favorite was the Roy Lichtenstein pieces. Nice lobby with clothes from the GAP family of brands on display, very appealing. The Richard Serra sculpture is impressive. Overall it is a very pleasant art gallery that you can see on a private tour or just enjoy the lobby fashion if you are not fortunate enough:)

Stop into the Gap lobby during business hours, and make your way inside the Serra ‘Charlie Brown’ piece. Hum or whistle a tone, and really experience the work.

I attended an event held here and they opened up the art gallery for our group. I don’t usually like modern art but the collection was definitely intriguing. especially ladder man… was he real… was he working? …was it the free wine???

this is, as others have said, an incredible collection of art, and it is a shame that it is not open to the public. i really hope that they soon succeed in building a museum to host the collection in the presidio because i left this gallery wanting to see more. i highly recommend that you start sleeping with someone who works at gap so that you can get in to see this art.

I was fortunate to go on a private tour of the art(mind you that the two galleries we toured was only about ½ of their total collection.) The galleries were breath taking! Piece after piece created by the same artist. The beauty is that the Fisher’s have collected many pieces of each artist so you get a wonderful scope of the work. It is so meaningful to go into a gallery and see 10 Lichtenstein’s in one room, 8 Agnes Martins, 8 Andy Warhol’s, multiple pieces of Richard Serra and countless other masterpieces. Even as you walk thru the lobby of the building you can see many Lichtenstein’s and a masterpiece by Richard Serra. A 9-story sculpture that was made for the building. Just make sure you take a walk inside the sculpture! Truly amazing. This is truly a collection that should be shared with the public. From the young to the old, from the rich to the poor, this collection is something to be shared with the community and the world. It is an inspiring collection. I can’t wait to see it one day on the magnificent museum they have plans for in the Presidio. I have high hopes that this community will back a wonderful, planned out project for the Presidio(and mind you completely endowed by the Fisher’s). I hope one day to be able to share this collection with my friends and family.

the huge brown serra sculpture in the atrium is called charlie brown!!! get it? so clever!!! heh. heh. theres an entrance where you can actually stand in it. as for the art gallery, i was fortunate enough to be part of hosting an event at the gap building and art gallery. the gallery is actually quite an extensive collection than i thought it would be. The corporate events lady we were working with told us that this is about 20% of the fisher’s art collection which is why you can understand that they kind of NEED a separate building to be built for their art to be enjoyed by many. some say the building in the presidio will be approved, others aren’t too happy b/c they want to preserve the old buildings in the presidio and not have some random modern art museum type building mucking it all up. well, they let george lucas in, why can’t they let the fishers right? other pieces of art are on also in don fisher’s office, and some others at the harrison gap office. seriously, these people have been collecting for a long time and have pieces of art just coming out of their ears!!! main highlight that caught my attention is the man in the corner with the ladder. at first i thought i came too early b/c some dude was still fixing the lights in the gallery, but then… he just stood there. wth? is he a wax museum figure? i wonder if he’s art? hmm… still too scared to walk closer to him… what if he’s like one of those wax statues, but when you walk up close, its actually a person and they scare the crap out of you? … well i’ll never know. i scurry away… bottom line, they have an excellent collection at the gap HQ. it would be worth displaying it in whole, somewhere…

2÷21÷08: Few people realize that there’s a monumental Richard Serra sculpture at the corner of Folsom and Embarcadero. I worked next door and learned that one can cut thru the Gap Building during the rainy season. Anyways, the building’s atrium(prolly 8 – 9 stories tall) facing the waterfront is filled with a beautiful serra sculpture. I’ve visited it many times and have always been awestruck each time. Don’t miss this hidden attraction!

this is a very exclusive art gallery as you have to be, or know, a gap employee to get in here. swipe a card, walk in, and be witness to some very exclusive pieces. some of the work hanging at the time i went through: + stefan bruggemann + claes oldenburg + roy lichtenstein + bruce nauman + richard serra i also learned something, a piece of SF lore, if you will. you know the huge oldenburg bow and arrow on the waterfront? it’s shooting at the heart of san francisco. it is owned by gap inc as well. and the reason it sits in that location? so that no one can put up a building there and block their view of the bay. pretty fucking smart. in addition, don and doris fisher, the owners of gap, inc. plan on opening a new museum in the presidio. the centerpiece of which will be a gigantic sculpture by renowned SF artist richard serra, whom the fishers are huge fans of. the huge sculpture in the entryway to gap is an original serra.
