I was *just* starting to get irritated with Valencia street and its irrepressible but useless hipness when I stumbled upon Goteblud. It’s in the back, down a hallway, behind a locked door, and you have to ring a bell to get in.(There was a sign on the sidewalk, though.) Inside I found a really friendly dog, a nice intern, and a fascinating collection of zines — maybe 50−60% music-related, but others on poetry, food, politics, sex, miscellany. I spent a good thirty minutes and found a few worth buying. I could have easily spent hours. I don’t know why this place exists, but it restored my faith in the neighborhood.

I’d heard of this place through the grapevine but stumbled across it unintentionally on a trip to SF. Goteblüd has lots of amazing treasures, the majority being zines, but also including really cool queer ephemera and artwork. Matt, the proprietor(who has since become a friend, full disclosure) is a great guy and they also host cool events/talks etc. Nice!!!

Matt made selling zines a snap. His kind demeanor and generous deals will keep me coming back to Gote Blud!

I used to be somebody! I used to be a contender! I was a ‘zine covergirl, but had lost an issue, so recently had to pay a whopping $ 12 for a magazine that was priced @ $ 1 in my lost and almost forgotten(but thankfully photo-documented) youth. So very cool that you have to be buzzed in to this super-secret location, in the same(old New College) building as the fancy pants my child wears skinny jeans they are so hip toy store outpost of Paxton Gate. 5 stars for this art gallery and living ode to the zine of yesteryear and today. Stop by before the end of May 2010 to see the Popstitutes exhibit. the useful: Cash only, hours are Saturday and Sunday, 12−5pm.

A secret clubhouse for fans of the pre-internet age. Roll up your sleeves and dig into the heaps of photocopied treasures, get that first issue of Teen Fag to complete your set, and there’s always a breathtaking art show all the way up to the high ceiling. Matt is a warm and gracious host, setting the cozy tone for all visitors. He traded zines with me! Just like old times!

I stumbled upon Goteblüd in search of this awesome exhibition on Riot Grrrl zines from the 90s: A trip down memory lane, Goteblüd is reminiscent of San Francisco’s Epicenter Zone, but a little less scummy(read: minus the junkies). Matt let me photocopy pages out of zines, listen to riot grrrl bands on cassette tape, and watch Bikini Kill on TV. What could be better? Go check it out if you’re into zines, comics, DIY, and/or underground culture. The space is located in the old New College building on Valencia St.

This is an amazing store, the kind that fills one niche, and fills it perfectly. A definite must-visit for lovers of zines and literary/artistic ephemera. Plus every Wuvable Oaf item you could possibly want, from back issues to T-Shirts and mugs.

Tons and tons and tons of amazing vintage zines for browsing and sale. Mostly a lot of rare and obscure punk rock, new wave and music things but I found some great comic zines, one in particular I had been looking for for a while now. While the store is small it’s really unique! There’s a huge carpeted wall from floor to ceiling with kitty climbing ledges for cat to play on. This might have something to do with the fact that GoteBlüd published San Franciso’s popular Wuvable Oaf comic in which kittens are a major element. In any case, it makes for a more than interesting and one of a kind space.
