Hodo Soy

i don’t think the kiosk exists anymore. there is a hodo soy stand at the saturday market. i love their products — hard to find organic soy! their yuba strips are delicious. also love their eggless salad and tofu nuggets (curry or five spice).

If my last meal on Earth consisted of food from this stall, I’d be perfectly content to go. I remember stumbling upon this gem, after being stuffed to the gills from eating my way through the Ferry Building. I literally jumped for joy when I looked in their fridge and found row after row of ready –made salads, sandwiches, pressed tofu blocks and drinks. And then I was asked if I wanted to sample their chocolate pudding. Ignoring my full belly, I nodded yes and was rewarded with some of the smoothest, silkiest pudding I have ever had. I’ve been back on a few occasions and their tea-​infused tofu is another must have. I just wish the prices weren’t so high, but I guess for a once in awhile treat, it’s doable.

Pricey, but the flavor is there. I don’t know what it is about soy milk in the Bay Area – even at the Asian stores, it tastes like crap. Not Hodo though – they’re legit. In NJ, there is an abundance of freshly pressed soy milk available for $ 2 – 3 for 64oz. Hodo charges $ 4 for 32 oz. Bummer. The only saving grace is the «today» sale where they sell things for half price if expiration date is listed as that day. I’ll let you in on a little secret. It doesn’t magically go bad that day. I’d say it’s good for at least 2 – 3 more days after – just enough time to finish 32oz on your own if you have to.
Oh, and the girl that sells the stuff is lovely – super sweet and helpful if for whatever reason flavor does not speak for itself.

It’s nice to see artisan soy and tofu represented at the Ferry Building. Hodo’s stand is a small one with refrigerated cases and some innovative creations — salads, tofu spring rolls, wraps, soy milk, tofu, pudding, yuba strips, and smoothies. There isn’t any market that I’ve been to which carries close to the full range of Hodo products.
* Chocolate pudding ($ 4): light, airy, creamy, the soy aftertaste is lovely
* Tofu: firm but not dry, clean aftertaste, beany but not strongly so, excellent tofu
* Tea smoked tofu: smooth, firm, a little sweet, not much tea flavor, a bit too salty
I’m disappointing that they don’t have anything warm (e.g., fresh hot soy milk) but they do have a wide variety of quality soy products.

LOVE IT. On the pricey side but — you really don’t know what soy milk taste like until you have theirs. Silk will be flavored water for you afterwards.
Also really amazing yuba noodle salad. Small looking but incredibly filling.

This is a permanent stall inside the ferry building (by Ciao Bella) and not the Tue & Thursday Farmers market.
The curry tofu wrap is pretty amazing. The tofu nugget provides great texture and they include plenty of veggies, you will definitely be full once you finish the whole thing. However, if you are looking for some Indian spicy food, this is definitely NOT going to satify your spicy cravings.
I will be back to try other items!

Their pre-​made lunch items are more inconsistent than Muni service during rush hour! One was the extreme of vegan elation and the other would turn even Natalie Portman into a carnivore. Perhaps an Oscar worthy picture called «The Black Soy» is in order?
Indian Curry Nugget Wrap: These nuggets were unbelievable. Chewy, scaly outside and firm tofu inside. Infused with curry flavor and curry drippings, not just a light glaze on the outside (I hate when flavored tofu products pull that shizz). I could easily pop these like Precious to a box of McNuggets. Additionally, the wrap itself was brilliant. Kind of a like the inside of a Vietnamese Spring Roll w/​Cilantro wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla. Like a fresh healthy version of those heavy Indian burritos popping up around town.
Chickenless Salad Sandwich: Chicken salad sandwiches aren’t exactly a favorite among omnivores so why try to create an even lesser vegan version? The slices of bread gave whole wheat a bad name. Not sure if it’s the style or the staleness, but it was one step removed from cardboard. The inside was bland soyannaise around even blander tofu shards. One bite and I gave up, just ended up eating the curry wrap.

Hodo Soy makes some quality products, from their basic tofu, soy milk and yuba (tofu skins) to flavored versions of all of those. The Hodo Soy stand in the Ferry Building also has chocolate pudding (flavored with chocolate from a nearby chocolate maker) and some cold curry wraps and sandwiches.
I got the pudding ($ 4) which was really tasty, but felt expensive considering the small portion.
They also give you free samples of anything, so don’t be shy about asking to try something out before you buy. Their spicy yuba dish is great, for example.
Hodo also sets up at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market and the Palo Alto Farmer’s Market. At the Ferry Building, they have a small stand inside, as well as outside.

They recently opened up a stall inside the ferry building and have a booth at the farmers market on Tues/​Sat. I went here for lunch today hoping to find their «Sky Is Falling» sandwich made with tofu spiced with yellow curry and turmeric that I had heard so much about in recent food blogs, but this location doesn’t sell anything of that kind. They do sell premade salads, soymilk, and other soy & tofu products, but selection is slim. I did try some of the curried bean curd which wasn’t bad, but wasn’t my idea of a filling lunch. Hopefully they’ll have more options soon!
