The new Hosfelt venue is lovely– the white floors and walls make all the exhibits pop. The opening events are always a great Saturday activity — especially the Jim Campbell one! Definitely looking forward to seeing the Alan Rath pieces.

4 stars for gallery, 5 stars for current show by Jim Campbell, one of my favorite artists in San Francisco. He creates mesmerizing videos using sparse(ultra low res) LED displays which he makes himself, placed behind Plexiglas. Impossibly elegant and also impossible to do any justice by describing or showing documentation in photos/videos. Go see in person. In this newest show, he’s gone from 2-D to a grid of LED’s in 3-D. Over a thousand LEDs hang in vertical rows — lights illuminate and then darken, creating an evocative moving image. The show is up through June 19th. A video of the show is here and a review here

This gallery has a very plain space that works really well with the unusual modern exhibits they have here. You never know what you may find there but many of the pieces do end up in SFMoma and other museums around the world. In a way it is a free preview of the new cool pieces. You should get Jay to show you around the gallery and to find out more about the artists. They are opening a new venue in NY this month as well.

I was just here today while on my regular afternoon stroll. There is an artist with a reception this evening here from 5:30 — 7:30pm who is absolutely incredible. Her name is Reed Danziger and the show is called Unknown Knowns. I won’t even attempt to capture her pieces with words, it’s beyond my ability and it’s better you just go to see them. Enjoy!
