The pre and post-​natal yoga classes with Sivadas and Sarani were the highlight of my week. It’s the best thing I did for my very happy but also very sleepy and anxious body. I had never done yoga before, but that didn’t matter. This is a place of peacefulness, support, and a super caring community. I recommend it to everyone pregnant and post-​natal. Thanks so much, Sivadas and Sarani — I’ll be back when I’m pregnant again! xo

I walked in the door to this San Francisco Institute 27 years ago this year. I have been a student, done work exchange for classes, attended retreats, and teachers trainings here. Integral yoga lives its mission statement. I can say the teachers and trainings I have attended and completed provided the highest level of education one can receive in a basic training. The teacher trainings are challenging, and they are full of one on one support. Integral Yoga is also and interfaith or Ecumenical center where you can dance with the Sufis, hear poetry, study the Bhagavad Gita, Patanjalis Yoga Sutras or just come to meditate, have lunch, read in the library. Most recently my friends have been buying the Groupon Deal for $ 35 for 10 classes. Great place to study yoga.

I am going back soon! Just waiting for the days to get longer so I can feel safer on the Muni J line on my way back home. I so look forward to their hatha yoga sessions which are not only physical but give you a sense of peace and calm.

What’s soothing and sweet and stretchy all over?
Prenatal yoga by Sarani and Sivadas! (Two alternate instructors from week to week.)
There will be no house music,
no hard-​core defying of physics,
no barking or negative reinforcement.
Instead there will be only:
gentle, restorative poses, designed to support and flow with a small group of women who are growing and changing week by short week.
IYI is in a converted victorian with spectacular views. It is an ashram, not a gym. Class size is intimate — ranging from 4 – 8 people in the prenatal class. After the initial steal of 3 classes fro $ 20, the class is still a bargain if you purchase a pass that averages out to $ 12/​class. After class, we meet in the cozy kitchen to have tea and snacks (preggers’ gotta have those snacks!). It’s becoming another support group, where we can exchange doula referrals, pain-​relieving tips, and general answers (or at least laughs) to the «what the fuck is going on with my body?» types of wonderment.
If you want a sweaty workout, this may not be the class. If you want to learn some supportive poses with emphasis on how to continue these on your own, this is the class for you.

You feel an enchanting peace wash over you the moment you step inside this beautiful Victorian home, turned yoga ashram. There is a strong feeling of community and warmth among the residents and students here. Regular classes are scheduled throughout the day and you have the option to have vegetarian lunch Mon, Wed, Fri for only $ 6. Classes in the temple are the best, make sure to check out the view from the window up there. It’s beautiful.

I moved to San Francisco almost a year ago and I’ve been trying out yoga studios all over town. I found IYI a few months ago & am so happy to have such a beautiful place to practice! Like other reviewers have said, this feels like real yoga; it’s like the yoga I practiced in India. I love that it’s in a beautiful old Victorian home, and that it’s an actual ashram, not a sleek fancy studio with mirrors everywhere. I love practicing in an old house, with tall ceilings & airy windows & gorgeous molding & a really neat turret. The community at IYI is really welcoming & friendly & non-​judgmental. They offer a great range of classes, as well as meditation, vegetarian lunches, kirtan, movie night, workshops, etc. I love that the classes always include chanting, meditation, yoga nidra, and pranayama. It’s such a great unique spot — check it out!

What a beautiful ashram! IYI comes closest to mirroring my experiences practicing yoga in India. The hushed quiet, soothing smells of patchouli, and deep respect for all branches of yoga (not just asanas) take me back … Classes consist of chanting, asanas, extended relaxation at the end, and (my favorite) pranayama (breathing exercises). It just feels complete and more spiritual than a rushed and crowded vinyasa class. I’ve tried various teachers over the years and while I liked some more than others, all were more than competent and well versed in the teachings of Hatha yoga. Definitely a great place for both beginners and the most advanced!

I come away from the Level I/​II yoga classes with a glowing, warm, and relaxed feeling that helps calm me down and releases tension in my shoulders and body.
The classes are more or less consistent regardless of the teacher, which is great.
This isn’t fitness yoga: you won’t sweat much and there’s no music.
The classes include a meditation period. I’ve tried Zen and I really like the idea of it but this isn’t nearly as difficult. In the I/​II classes, the meditation period comes at the end, it’s relatively brief, it’s mostly guided, and you rest on the floor while doing it. It’s perfect.
After class, there’s one more treat: from the front door there’s an amazing view of downtown SF.

The family yoga and regular yoga classes are great too. Very clean and friendly.
I love the prenatal pregnancy yoga classes. Really helps with stress, aches, and pains. Totally focuses on your integral well being helps the body. I learned from another yoga teacher who teaches elsewhere that she began her yoga here.

This is the place if you want a true YOGA experience. The moment you walk in the door you are embraced with love, there is an amazing feeling you get. Like being home. The teachers are well trained and absolutely know what they are doing. The true meaning of yoga is expressed here. I love this place so very much. I don’ t go anywhere else anymore~ not fond of loud music or so hot rooms, oh so stinky. I recommend the IYI it gets 5 stars and only because there is not an optiin for 10 stars. I love it.

IYI is a wonderful place to pursue the study of Yoga. Many westerners consider Yoga to be (only) physical exercises, but it is so much more. In my years at IYI I have learned so much about meditation, yogic breathing, hatha and study of yoga scriptures.
It’s an amazing place with good energy. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced practitioner, you will find classes to heal, guide and renew your soul. Work exchange opportunities make it very easy for people of low income to take class and participate in activities…
I encourage you to visit, to see for yourself!

Love it! Beautiful upper temple and great instructors. I got a great stretch workout as well as meditation and walked away with a calm clean mind. Thinking of getting a package deal… will definitely be back next week. woot!

This building is amazing. It’s a huge old house and the yoga instructors live there. It is definitely more «yoga» feeling than a Bikram class you might take in the Mission w/​a bunch of hipsters. The classes are relatively small and the teachers really look out for you. The building has a narrow winding staircase that takes you up and down to the classroom levels. It feels very old-​timey, but also very clean and pretty. Many of the rooms have a lot of natural light. I have always left classes feeling much more relaxed and invigorated. This is a real gem of SF next to the disaster of Dolores Park.

After an absence of 18 months, I made the trek to the Integral Yoga Institute (IYI). An amazing and beautiful place. This isn’t simply a place for asanas (physical yoga), but a place that lifts your spirit with all the lovely souls who are there. Just crossing over the threshold makes me softly energized, light, at peace; I become the ‘glass is half full’ person again. I’ve missed this placed. I’ll be returning as often as I can!

The Integral Yoga Institute feels like a Hogwarts school of Yoga. Our class was held high atop one of the castle’s turrets on Dolores street. Be prepared for walking up three floors of stairs, but your reward will be beautiful views from vintage windows of the city.
Upon entering the IYI I was greeted with a happy «Welcome, welcome welcome!» by the man behind the desk. This friendly institute feels like a co-​op offering volunteering in exchange for classes. In addition to yoga there are vegan lunches and meditation at noon. Classes here have a more spiritual vibe than most studios.
Our teacher was extremely gentle and the practice very mild. The yoga was Hatha and focused on breath. It was a nice meditative style, but at times I felt restless and was worried about cooling down. Despite the carpet flooring it didn’t have any odor.

we love this place. It’s such a relief from city hectic-​ness to be here as soon as you enter the front door. So what if you don’t like chanting?! Don’t chant, just enjoy the relaxing and peaceful environment.
You think the classes are too easy? Yoga is as challenging and rewarding as you make it, you just have to find the obstacles within yourself.
we were students here for a long time, then we did the teacher trainings. Not to become teachers, but just to deepen our own practice. So worth it!

This review is for the pre-​natal yoga class at the Integral Yoga Institute:
The people who greet you are very friendly, but not overly so. There is a home-​type atmosphere to the place. The pre-​natal class is fairly new, so so far the classes have been small, which is great because the instructor has a chance to give more individual instruction. She is very good at helping people find alternate poses if something isn’t working. She is also knowledgeable about a number of local resources. Also, the studio classes are in has natural light from multiple windows and if it gets to warm you can actually have fresh air!
If I could do 4.5 stars I would, only because parking can be difficult, however, if you live close enough to walk, ride a bike, or are familiar with public transportation this shouldn’t be a problem, so I left it at 5 stars as this is more my issue than the Institute.

What I love the most about ‘Old School’ Yoga traditions, like IYI, is the focus on the internal, rather than the external. The teachers ‘get’ that
every student is on their own path. The structure of the classes; beginning with Hatha and moving through relaxation to breathing and meditation practices, is like complete workout — only inward.
