beware of posting a review for this P.O.S. band… they delete the bad reviews and only keep the good ones. I posted about my unpleasant and unacceptable experience a week or so ago, and i guess they couldn’t handle the honesty. spend that hard earned $$ elsewhere… in this economy, you should know what you’re paying for…
have some damn integrity J.M.!!
the following is what i posted a week ago that they removed:
«6÷16÷2010 Edit «ok… i took my girlfriend out for a date to coda’s to have dinner and see Jazz Mafia. i made a reservation for 830pm for a 900pm show… 900pm came and went, and so did 10pm… the opening «rappers» didn’t even start until 1020pm, which lasted another half an hour, which means the main act didn’t even start until almost a quarter to 11pm! WTF? SO SO rude to keep the people who’ve paid $$ to come see you waiting so long. Totally unacceptable to me. Then the lead singer had the audacity to shush the audience… (which weren’t being that loud mind you… justifying the insult with their «art making.») The music wasn’t that great and the band didnt seem to be too polished… definitely not living up to the diva-​esque attitude they made us all wait for. Fortunately the venue, food/​drink and customer service were good. NEVER seeing the band again…
im even inclined to say the 5-​star votes here are actually the band members…
we’re not a bunch of squirrels in your world Jazz Mafia… without your patrons, you’d be flippin burgers instead of flippin lame rhymes and garage-​band caliber music. »

They’re the reason I still live in the Bay Area. Is that reason enough to check them out?
Spaceheater is my favorite Jazz Mafia band, they intro’d me to aaaaal the music I’ve grown to love and, well… become obsessed with.

What Paypal Mafia is for Internet start-​ups, and the Mafia Mafia is for New Jersey garbage collection, the Jazz Mafia is for our local jazz scene. You can’t touch them.
Jazz Mafia is a collective of musicians, bands, and events, all under the suble orchestration of local prodigy Adam Thies, who is often in the background somewhere playing bass, trombone, or some other instrument.
I’ve been following some of these musicians for a decade or more, and individually they could be straight-​ahead jazz, acid jazz, funk, hip-​hop, world music, soul, even blues or rockers. They get together, and they do all that and more in one song. You never know what form it will take next, from a jazz trio to a big band orchestra, with or without scratchers, electric violins, MCs, and lots of guest singers. There is often an afterparty. So when they all got together under the jazz mafia umbrella, it was brilliant. I’d recommend seeing them in any line-​up, in any venue, whenever you want to check them out. Over time you’ll learn who is who and might develop a preference. It’s the music equivalent of discovering a great ice cream shop or pizza place.

Best collection of live musical groups in the SF Bay Area, playing a wide variety of «jazz» music. They used to play every Tuesday at Bruno’s, and I tried to be there as often as possible. I would bring friends as often as possible, knowing they would always be impressed.
Sadly, that ended last fall, but in May they will start up again at the new «Redemption Lounge» in the Mission.
