Dr. Schiller is kind, considerate, and seems very genuinely interested in his patients. Now, I’m no fan of dentistry… I spent way too much time ‘in the chair’ as a kid, and still shudder inside every time I need to go to the dentist.(As an aside, that’s why I’ve been seeing my main dentist, Dr. Robert Chan, for so long. He’s really good.) So when Doc Chan said that I should get a periodontal eval, I was really dreading the process. I arrived at Doc Schiller’s office in West Portal 15 minutes late, and he had already started working on another patient, so I had to cool my heals in the waiting room for a while. After I’d been waiting for 5 minutes, Dr. Schiller came out and introduced himself, then apologized for making me wait. 5 minutes more and I was in the chair. Dr. Schiller spoke with me for a while, getting a dental history and discussing my taste in literature.(I was reading«Infinite Jest».) I got the feeling that this was someone who recognized me as a person, and not just a patient. In this era of factory medicine, it was very pleasant. The evaluation itself went fine. I wouldn’t call it pleasant, but the poking and prodding wasn’t terribly unpleasant either. After it was done, Dr. Schiller explained that while I had some deeper-than-normal pockets in my gums, the situation wasn’t horrible. Pleasantly, he seemed willing to wait before diving into my mouth, drill a’blazing. That, too, is refreshing. It shows that he’s not just trying to rack up insurance bills. I’d have to say that my experience with Dr. Schiller was excellent, and everything I’d hope for from a medical professional.
