I visited Marlowe with a group of friends on a Saturday evening. We arrived at 10 pm, and surprisingly, this place was still packed. I was afraid that the restaurant wouldn’t be able to accommodate our group of six without a reservation. Luckily, the hostess informed us that the wait would only be about 15 minutes, and a group of very hungry people released a collective sigh of relief. While waiting, we perused the food menu, where everything looked delicious, and we ordered drinks. They have a healthy selection of wine, beer and cocktail options available. Everyone opted for cocktails — with all the guys in the group going for The Donkey(aka an Irish Mule) — and everyone was very pleased with their drink choices. I ordered The Baker later in the evening and I can recommend it as well for your drinking enjoyment.(All the cocktails were $ 12 or $ 13.) In terms of food, we let Unilocal reviews direct us to the Deviled Eggs, Spiced Jumbo Gulf Shrimp, Marlowe Burger(with included Marlowe Fries), and Grilled Niman Pork Chop. The Deviled Eggs, Grilled Niman Pork Chop and Marlow Fries(with its addictive horseradish aioli) were all amazing and lived up to expectations. The only disappointment was the famous Marlowe Burger: while definitely a good burger, it was not especially exceptional. In terms of service, Marlowe also excelled. The entire staff was extremely friendly and seemed genuinely concerned about making sure that we had a great dining experience. While waiting for our table we promptly had our drink orders taken and served. Our server for the evening regularly checked in with our table to make sure we had everything we needed. And, without asking, she already had two billing options prepared for whether we wanted a single bill or multiple bills split among couples. Simply put, the staff here rocks! Although this place is currently listed as $$ for price, it really is a $$$ restaurant. One last interesting observation: note that while dining, you’re actually sitting on dozens of bottles of wine. In a nice use of space, the restaurant stores its wine under the seats in the dining area.

Absolutely loved this place! As soon as we walked in, it felt like we were transported back to NYC. We were able to grab a walk in table at 930pm and were seated fairly quickly. Our waitress was super nice and accommodating and when our main meal took a while to come out, the manager came by and gave us a roasted pistachios which were über delicious! Our dishes: — Brussels sprouts chips: a bit on the saltier side but still really good — Chicken fried okra: imagine fried okra with fried batter, like fried chicken but without actual meat. Good but could pass. — Deviled eggs: actually so delicious! Must get. Only $ 2.5 per half egg. — Anson Mills Polenta: a delicious mix of arugula, mushrooms and Polenta — Roasted cauliflower: completely unexpected but tasted like a delicious mac and cheese Also due to a mixup in the kitchen, they gave us a free dessert which was ice cream over a light cookie base. The service was incredibly top notch and would definitely recommend!

I honestly really wanted to like this place. The food is good and so many of my friends love it, but seriously the service i’ve experienced has been horrendous. My first time there I arrived for my reservation on time, however, apparently our table wasn’t ready yet and the host said you can try and find some room at the bar otherwise you can wait outside. luckily it was summer and not cold out, but I was immediately turned off by his attitude. I thought, ok it was just a host and gave this place a second chance a few weeks ago with some girlfriends. Again, we arrived for our reservation and was seated right away. However, we sat for almost 20 minutes with NOTONE server coming to greet us. The only interactive we had was a busser giving us water. FINALLY, after 15 minutes I had to ask the busser to go get a server. After waiting an additional 5 minutes, she apologized that we had been waiting long, but that was it. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the evening. Honestly, there is ZERO excuse for being ignored especially when you have at least 3 servers walking by our table and one of them had gone by the table next to us TWICE without a single glance in our direction. I really wanted to like this place because I think the food is great, but my second time going I remembered why I didn’t like it. From my experience this place is overly-pretentious and disgustingly snobby. If you come here for the burger, go spend your $ 20 dollars elsewhere, like at Chez Maman or Monk’s Kettle.

I was curious about Marlowe bc it has been on Michael Bauer’s Top 100 list for a few years. I like it! I was able to make a reservation for brunch, which is fab(no waiting starving for an hour on the sidewalk), they had mimosas, gluten free friendly, allergy friendly, great service, and home made doughnuts. The staff greeting you at the door are super friendly. The wait staff are attentive to any special food requests. Also, they had a nice brunch menu and a full bar! I didn’t try the famous burger but I did have the tomatoe baked eggs, which were yummy. French toast soliders, Loretta’s Vacherin(meringue w/coffee ice cream), and peanut butter pretzel nuggets were super. Also, if people are driving, much easier parking in this part of SOMA than other SF neighborhoods.

I pass Marlowe all the time walking home and finally decided to stop in for the Marlowe Burger on a Wednesday night around 8:30 or 9pm. I was very surprised at how busy this place was at this time. Such a cool spot though, I really liked it. MARLOWEBURGER($ 16) — really good burger but I wasn’t a huge fan of the bun. It tasted like a cheap bun they bought from a grocery store. Other than that I really enjoyed it. BRUSSELSSPROUTS($ 9) — drenched in something(butter and lemon?). A little too soggy for me and not well done enough DRINKS: Sculpin IPA — awesome IPA — would definitely get this again The service here was good and it’s a great spot but a little too expensive.

Not your run of the mill brunch spot — you won’t be able to find your egg and waffle favorites here. That being said, there are fantastic menu items here that are worth trying at least once. Come with a group so you can get dishes to share! We started with the warm kale salad, which in my opinion is a must! Warm, garlicky, and with a perfectly runny poached egg on top. Enough to split! I would probably pass on the French toast soldiers a second time around. It was still good and comes with two dipping sauces — coffee and chocolate. There was something off about the consistency of the chocolate sauce… it was a little bit thicker than desired, almost as if they had added marshmallow or too much corn starch. Still yummy, but a little bit odd. We were debating between the doughnuts and the French toast — there was a little bit regret after we saw doughnuts arrive at the table next door. The mushroom polenta was a little bit out of my comfort zone but I’ve been a sucker for poached eggs lately — it was fantastic! The mushrooms were delicious and I always love a good serving of shaved parmesan. I got a side of bacon for a little serving of meat and a side of maple syrup — which was a great call! Disclaimer, if you are into thick cut chewy bacon, this will not be for you. Lucky for me I dig crunchy bacon, so this was perfect. Also heard great things about burger! Overall, this place is a little pricier and the menu items are not your traditional brunch options, but I think it was pretty worth it for the experience and I would come back to try more menu items!

Update — My overall impression of Marlowe has increased in the past couple of years, but the rate of my increasing happiness has not kept pace with the rate of increasing prices. There is no way Marlowe is a $$ restaurant — it is squarely in the $$$ definition. I’ve really enjoyed all of the food I’ve had at Marlowe in the past year, but the menu is relatively simple new American food. Nothing is particularly innovative or surprising. The seating is very cramped, service is lackluster, and the restaurant is too loud to justify its pricing pricing. If truly priced at $$, Marlowe would be a solid 4.5 stars. At $$$, it’s hard to see it above 3.5 stars. Check out the menu at . As you can see, the cheapest main on the menu is the $ 16 burger(formerly $ 13). Second cheapest thing is the vegetarian dish(currently polenta, $ 22), and the third cheapest main is the chicken(poulet vert) at $ 28. Starters are priced at entrée pricing — $ 12 to $ 17 for starters ranging from broccolini to burrata. «Bites,» which are finger food snacks like a bowl of toasted pistachios or brussel sprout chips, range from $ 7 to $ 12. A conservative meal here will end around $ 50, and if you add drinks or an extra starter, plan to be near $ 100. Like my review noted 4.5 years ago, I still feel that the servers are annoyed if I don’t order any alcoholic drinks or load up on bites or starters.

I made a reservation via OpenTable for dinner on friday. It’s my husband’s birthday, and he was craving for a good burger. Verdict is that the marlowe burger didn’t disappoint, but he said it’s not the best burger he ever had. I am in love with their devil eggs, and baked oysters. Husband killed my polenta when it was served. We both love it. Flavorful and full of texture. A tad salty, but I love it. The service is top notch. The hostess sat us down immediately though we were 15 mins early. The servers kept checking on us even though they were pretty busy. They served us with a surprise dessert with a birthday candle on the side when I simply asked for a birthday note on the table when I made the reservation. On a separate note, their dinner menu starts at 530pm. Some of the mains are not available before that, but you can still order the Marlowe burger. :)

I’ve been eating at Marlowe(consistently) since 2008 and have remained impressed with the menu, staff, and overall atmosphere in the countless times I’ve been there. It’s great for a causal lunch, date spot, pre Giants baseball game, and happy hour. Super versatile. My favorite dishes remain the following: Baked Oysters Fried Chicken Sandwhich(no mayo/aioli) Brussel Sprout Chips Deviled Eggs James/Anna(owners) are always SUPER welcoming and have quite the touch when it comes to hospitality and treating their customers right. It’s that kind of attitude and hard work that has helped them expand their empire with the other restaurants in their portfolio(Park Tavern/Cavalier/Leo’s Oyster Bar). None of this could be accomplished without Sarah(the manager), who is SUPER friendly and the rest of their amazing staff. A solid wine list, beers and full bar ranging from old world to new, round out Marlowe’s eclectic feel and always wanting me to come back for more.

We decided to eat at Marlowe based on the high praised reviews on Unilocal. To me time is money and very valuable, but I was disappointed with this place from the get go, not entirely to their fault but mostly because of lack of info at Unilocal. 1. Bar menu vs full menu Unilocal only tells us they are open for service. We arrived there at 3 pm. It was bad because we didn’t know they’d only serve the bar menu, which is limited in choice until 5.30. We ate nick nacks and waited for whopping 2.5 hours to eat what we came for, which was the bone marrow. 2. Food was not good I think this restaurant is doing some sort of social experiment. They charge high prices for not really edible food just to see whether you’d pretend to like it because you wanna look hip or cultured. Let me explain this using 1 dish they have. During that long 2.5 hours, we tried literally everything they offered on their bar menu, so I feel Qualified to draw conclusions since I at least tried everything they offered. — crispy Brussels sprout chips I like Roasted Brussels sprouts in general and I wasn’t sure what to expect of the chips though. They serve it with the little dessert fork. Good luck picking those chips with that! Even your fingers can hardly pick it. This dish is salty as hell, burnt as hell and can only be eaten if you literally let the«chips» stick to your tongue,‘yes I mean you need to lick it off of your plate or let it stick. — oysters: okay this dish was good unlike the burnt aka crispy Brussels sprouts. — warm deviled egg: we ordered two and guess what we got? 1 egg!!! They cut it in half and call it two and charge like $ 3 per half an egg! Told you they were doing a social experiment, really trying to see how you’d react! — jumbo shrimp: it was just meh, I tried better ones and this place really like to burn things. Won’t recommend. — burger: for $ 16 is it wrong of me to expect to get a decent burger, at least not half of a burger? Who ate the other half of my burger? 3. Actual food from the real menu Bone marrow: this was the very item we came for and after waiting for long we finally got it. It’s served with as much as 6 pieces of bread. Guess what? You won’t need 5 of those. You just buy one giant bone! Where the hell Is the bone marrow? Not the bone?! A good chef can choose it right so that it’ll have enough bone marrow to eat. What a disappointment?! 4. Cocktails: was okay though. 5. Service: for whatever reason, our table had 3 different servers. Servers change suddenly.

This place. Love. I was supposed to go here with friends during the week of Christmas, but ended up going the following Monday… thank goodness for no traffic that evening! The streets weren’t all that busy, plus we were able to find parking easily… I think we paid $ 3 more or less for parking… and it was close to the restaurant too! It’s a pretty small restaurant… we arrived around 5:45ish(reservations were for 6:30)…the hostess was nice enough to have us seated early… in less than an hour, the restaurant filled up… man, was that quick… so you’re bets are off trying to come in and dine as a walk-in…you could always try your luck at the bar, but even that was filled up end-to-end with a quickness. The ambience of the restaurant is really nice, but if you ask me, my first thought just by looking at all the décor made me think of «this is more fitting for a steakhouse.» Anyway, everything we tried here was excellent from the cocktail drinks to the desserts. Oh yeah, customer service is amazing here. can’t forget to mention that! Our orders: Cocktails: The Baker– This must be one of their more popular drinks or something, cuz my friend ordered it, the couple to the left and right of us ordered multiple of these… I tried a sip, but I honestly thought it was just okay… it was fruity and sweet, but I felt the ETOH was on the stronger end for me. The Pimm’s Cup-Ok, I thought it was going to be served in a copper mug or something just cuz the name of this drink had«cup» at the end of it haha. It’s a very refreshing drink, and I liked this drink very much… maybe because it has ginger beer in it haha… i love ginger beer. The Barnog– In the spirit of the holidays, why the heck not… well actually, we just saw one of the servers handing it to the customer and it just looked interesting… so yeah, basically it’s boozy eggnog and then some… this too was very good… Starters: Half-dozen fresh oysters… I squirted hella lemon on those suckers haha… it’s hard for me to get over the taste of «ocean» in my mouth without gagging if you must know lol… the little sauce that goes with it made it taste even better. $ 18 Small Plates/Entrees: –Bone Marrow-Get it and do what some of our fellow Unilocalers(including myself) did… just when you thought you were done eating all the marrow off the bone, think again. In the midst of scraping that yummy, chewy baguette against the marrow, you’ve let a lot of the flavor and oil drip into the pan… so yes… I HIGHLYSUGGESTYOUTAKETHATBREADANDSCRAPETHEOILFROMTHATPAN! You know you’ve fallen in love with the restaurant when you ask the server, «May I have some more bread please?», and then they immediately complete your sentence with, «Some more bread to dip in the oil… you got it.» That was a beautiful moment I tell you. –The Marlowe Burger-Not the best burger I’ve ever had, but it’s one of the best… doesn’t seem like much when you’re just reading this off the menu, but once you taste it, I’m almost sure you’ll be glad you ordered it… The Marlowe Fries are simple and perfect, the burger itself is simple, but that horseradish aioli though… that was tasty. I’m not a medium-rare on my meat type of gal, but I’ll make it an exception for this burger. –My entrée, the«Poulet Vert” — Before ordering this, I was already set on the polenta, but when I asked the server what the heck a Poulet Vert was, she said it was a roasted chicken dish… I straight up ditched the polenta and went for the Poulet Vert like a boss haha… roasted chicken always gets me haha… so flavorful, tender, and juicy. Everything went well together on that dish, especially the grapes. Dessert: –I don’t even remember the name of the dessert we ordered, but per the server, it was the most popular choice on the menu. I just remember it starts with a V. it’s coffee-flavored ice cream sitting on a meringue cookie drenched in fudge chocolate and almonds… I’m not really into anything coffee, but damn this was good… down to the very last spoonful. Last but not least, what totally made my night was this: Because I was enjoying that dessert a little too much, my clumsy butt ended up spilling some of the chocolate onto my top. I tried patting it down with my napkin and water, but it was hardly working. I wasn’t even paying attention to the staff cleaning up our table up until I heard the magic words, «Would you like some club soda to help remove the stain?» Omg, yes! Omg, how much better can customer service be! I was very thankful, and so was my top… the club soda removed the stain with ease haha. I definitely recommend this restaurant… it’s a good place to be if you want to satisfy your inner foodie.

Torn between 3 and 4 stars, but I’m going to go with three for now. I don’t work too far from Marlowe, but had never been there till recently because it always seemed pretty crowded. Recently I was able to grab a seat at the bar though, and had a fairly nice experience though nothing spectacular. The menu isn’t too big, with a few appetizers, some smaller plates(«bites»), and then a few entrees and sides. A lot of the starters and bites sounded good(the duck liver mousse, warm Caesar toast, steak tartare, roasted bone marrow are all things I definitely considered ordering) but since their burger seems to be pretty popular, I went with that. I did start with the deviled eggs which were okay but not what I consider to be deviled eggs since they were more like just hard boiled eggs with bacon and cheese. The burger was good, but not amazing. I did appreciate that they cooked it exactly medium as I asked– a lot of places around San Francisco have seemed incapable of cooking my burger to my preferred temperature so this was a big plus. I love bacon on my burger usually but here I actually found it to take away from the burger a little, especially because the bacon was just a tad overcooked. The horseradish aioli did add a nice tang but it seemed to not be consistently spread and so parts of my burger had more(those parts were definitely better) while other parts had almost none. The burger was definitely on the salty side as well. The fries it came with were really good– crispy and perfectly seasoned. I also had a couple cocktails. The cocktails on their menu were not super interesting to me, and I ordered one but was not a big fan of it(they did have a couple of special cocktails of the day which sounded better but I didn’t try those). Since nothing on the menu sounded interesting, I also ordered an old fashioned. This was well made and I would definitely order it again. I normally like to try things from a restaurant’s cocktail menu, but here, I would probably stick to my usual choices(unless they change the menu in the future, which I have a feeling they do). Overall, Marlowe is not a bad option for either just appetizers and drinks or a full meal. I would potentially come back in the future to try more of their menu, especially some of the small plates and starters.

Marlowe is really a place where you should indulge in every bite. Not just because the plates are a tad smaller than usual, but also because each bite is packed with the perfect mix of flavors. Seating is pretty limited for how popular it is, so I’d definitely recommend making a reservation. Service is so friendly and polite yet the ambience definitely creates a yuppy vibe. Having heard so much of the Marlowe burger, my dad and I decided to order that along with the warm kale and Brussels sprouts salad. The salad comes with three crisps of croûton bread and slices of Parmesan cheese. I wish I knew the dressing the salad was in but it’s creamy and not too overwhelming. The portion is small, but like I said earlier, I would take the time to indulge in every bite! The Marlowe burger comes with a choice of fries or salad, but I’d recommend getting the fries. Personally, I thought it was fried to the perfect degree and the horseradish aioli is really what it’s hyped up to be! That was my dads favorite part of the meal and be found it to be very unique. We ordered the burger medium rare and it was cooked to perfection! Marlowe caters to all sorts of groups: families, couples, young adults, and definitely the SF foodie seeking out the new«hip» place to go!

Whatever I order here, I never go wrong. Cuz they’re good like that. The deviled egg sammie, loaded with cheez and tiny pickled jalapeño slices? So good! I wish their sister restaurant, Park Tavern, had it too. Fries? Yummy for my tummy. Desserts? I’ve had a couple here, all amazing. One of my fave spots in the city.

I’ve had Marlowe bookmarked for ages, and I finally got the chance to eat here. We made a reservation and showed up about 30 minutes earlier. The restaurant itself is pretty small and in a squat building that you could totally overlook. It was mostly full, but we got seated immediately at a booth. It’s noisy in there, and the tables are very crowded together, so careful where you go in case you knock down some unaware diner’s food. My friend and I ordered the oysters, bone marrow, brussels sprouts chips, Marlowe burger, and pork chops. I love bone marrow, but I should probably stop ordering it at every restaurant that serves it… Either way, the bone marrow here was delicious. Our waiter recommended scraping our bread along the bottom of the pan to catch the oil that had leaked out, which sounds really gross and unhealthy but is totally worth it. The oysters were yum. They tasted of the sea. Super fresh, so it was okay that market price that day was $ 18. The brussels sprouts chips were… interesting. They were really heavily salted, and even that wasn’t enough to hide the bitterness of the brussels sprouts. The texture was good, but I can confidently say I’m not a fan of brussels sprouts. The Marlowe burger was just a burger. If you’ve read my reviews, you know my opinion towards overpriced burgers and fast food, but I thought we’d give it a try considering the hype. The waiter was nice enough to split it in half for my friend and me without asking. What really stole the show were the pork chops. O M G. Get the pork chops. I’ve never had pork chops this tender in my life. Seriously. At one point, I was just gnawing meat off the bone. Yes, I’m a savage. Check came out to be around $ 100.

Was looking for a new burger in the SF area, and came upon reviews for the burgers here, so we decided to give it a shot. This place is in an industrial area, but no big worries as parking it rather cheap here. A quarter an hour at the meters! Can’t beat that. We didn’t have reservations and the place was kinda empty, and were told we would have to eat at the bar. I didn’t believe her at first, but yeah, this place filled up rather quickly. They have a decent selection of specialty drinks that were all quite good. The burger itself while being on the smaller side as well as a bit more on the expensive side was really realy good. I liked it! We didn’t order anything else as we have been eating a bit too much recently, but everything was good overall. It’s a smaller restaurant, but it’s SF, so that’s not unexpected. Overall, thumbs up.

Marlowe has been one of those restaurants that has been on my list to visit forever! I have a tendency to over-hype restaurants in my mind and get disappointed when I actually go, but this place blew my expectations away! I came on a Saturday for brunch and of course, it was super packed! Luckily there was some open seats at the bar so we didn’t have to wait. We ordered a half dozen oysters(it’s never too early for oysters, right?), deviled eggs, and crab toast with poached egg to share. Everything was delicious! For my entrée I ordered the burratta tartine. It had candied bacon, which makes anything extra tasty! Then for dessert(because who can go without dessert? Not me, that’s for sure!) we got the french toast soldiers which came with two different sauces. I’m all about the coffee crème because I’m the hugest fan of anything coffee flavored, but the Mexican hot chocolate was delicious as well. After such a delicious brunch experience, we’re very excited to make a reservation for dinner some time. Can’t wait to be back!

3.5 stars. Cute place. been wanting to come for a long time, and heard they recently moved. liked the space and service was great. came with a vegetarian so did not order the burger or bone marrow cause we were sharing a bunch of things and didn’t think i could eat it all myself. maybe i should’ve. ordered the brussel sprout chips(meh — i make these all the time and didn’t think these were special for $ 9); warmed deviled eggs(good); baked oysters(really good); broccolini app special(good); caesar toast(okay); little gem salad(i actually hated this. boring and no flavor) and the dessert with meringue cookie and coffee ice cream(very good). all in all. wasn’t wowed by anything but i liked this place and setting. Would come back again to try non vegetarian dishes.

Visited SF with my girls one weekend and I was super excited to try this place out. I love their weird and random pictures located near the bathroom. It gave me something to do while waiting in line for the bathroom. Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation so we didn’t have to wait. It slowly started to get packed so I recommend getting a reservation if you’re impatient like me. The best thing on their menu is definitely their Brussel sprouts chips!!! They’re extremely addicting, crunchy and delicious. They are a bit oily and greasy, but what chips arent? Seriously tho, get these if you’re here, you won’t regret it. I got the Anson Mills Polenta which was AMAZING! I never tried polenta until this moment and I surprisingly liked it. It reminded me of this yellow Chinese porridge that I’ve had before. The best part about the dish was literally everything! This dish was so perfect for me because it had all of my favorite ingredients in it. It comes with mushrooms, arugula, Parmesan, truffle salsa verde and a poached egg. This is like a vegetarians dream dish, at least it was mine. I forsure recommend this dish, and I can’t wait to come back to get this again. My other friends didn’t really enjoy their dishes as much as I did. They thought it was mediocre and nothing special. I would give this place 4 stars since my friends thought this place was whatever’s, but I really enjoined my dishes so I just gotta give it 5 stars.

Being on the Whole30 plan this month(no dairy, no grains, etc.) made my trip to Marlowe a little bit more bare-bones than I would have wanted. However, a burger is a burger, and I don’t need a bun(or cheese) to tell me if a burger is amazing. Do they make burgers better? In some cases. But if the beef used is high-quality and properly seasoned, an unadorned burger should be able to stand on its own. And this one did. While it was topped a few nights later by a newcomer on the burger scene up in the Marina, it was definitely one of the top 3 burgers I’ve had in my 11 months in SF. The flavor was great, the temperature was right and everything worked. I thought they might be able to accommodate my request for no bun with a lettuce wrap, but it seems the burger lettuce is pre-shredded, so it wasn’t something I could pick up with my hands. Still yummy. The brussels sprout chips were a yummy starter that vanished quickly, and the side salad that I had with my burger was very nice too. My major issue with this burger is probably the price point. Even for such high quality, I think $ 19 is steep.

MARLOWE was recommended by a bunch of website before i came in SF and damn. Tasty, Jucy, Fancy, hell yeah these adjectives can resume Marlowe’s statement. Cocktails are great like The Baker one(their signature cocktail) Burger are awesome way ahead Super Duper ones, the meat is jucy and tasty. It’s like Christmas in your mouth ! Great cocktail Great Food Nice place. Service is awesome and gave you some advice. Marlowe… Definitely a MUST-DO in SF !
