Today we attended a free one-hour opera movie for children with live introduction. Sold-out showings include Friday, November 27 and Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 11:00AM, 1:30PM and 4:00PM. Our 3-year-old was a bit young, as the recommended for ages were 4 – 12. Our son made it through 45 minutes(not bad). The film was aptly directed by Yuval Sharon — in English with subtitles. The music was beautiful, and I especially liked tenor Chad Freeburg who sang the part of Tamino. Another exceptional talent, Svetlana Nikitenko, coloratura soprano who sang the part of The Queen of the Night, attended today’s 1:30 show and was available to sign autographs after the screening. An abridged opera movie is a nice way to introduce kids to opera, and easy on the budget. All we had to pay for was getting there. The Herbst Theatre is lovely. It was interesting to be surrounded by kids(especially during flu season), and since we weren’t the only noisy ones in the the crowd. The Magic Flute happens to be one of my least favorite operas, but for some reason, it’s popular. I’ll take Carmen, Don Giovanni, La Périchole any day over Magic Flute — but I guess we don’t want tragedies or adult themes for the kiddies. Maybe next time they could do Barber of Seville. Besides Luke A. keeping the love for opera alive, I’ve often wondered how opera will survive in modern times. Introducing it to kids this way is a good strategy for opera’s long-term survival.
