My husband has been working in SF for the last three weeks, and many of his meals have been at this place. I checked their pictures and they looked amazing. I decided to come visit him this week for a few days, so I grabbed my fat jeans and headed to enjoy a carb fueled mini vacation. The place is small and there is always a wait, but it is so worth it. While we waited, you can enjoy a glass of wine on the outside tables. There is no food service outside, but you can have drinks. Once we got our table I ordered the Fettuccine al pesto, I have been dreaming about it. I also told my husband that he wanted the gnocchi bolognese, hint, hint. That was my other choice so I wanted to taste it. Both dishes were amazing, the pesto was creamy and garlicky but delicious and the gnocchi were like little fluffy delicious pillows with a scrumptious bolognese sauce. We ended the night with a shared tiramisu. This place is worth the trip. I ended up going two nights in a row. My second night, I had the tortellini with pesto and my husband had the Melanzana alla Parmigiana, plus chocolate ganache dessert, so delicious!

Got here, put our name down for a table for 4, and we were told the wait would be 45 minutes. We went for a 20 minute walk and returned to check in with the hostess. At that point she asked if we were 2 or 4. We said 4 again and she looked a bit embarrassed. She had clearly passed us up because the actual wait was less than 20 minutes. They then seated tables of 2 and 4 ahead of us. We finally were seated an hour later when they had closed and trays of food were arriving from some other place. They told us we couldn’t order large plates because the table we got was the best of tiny and wouldn’t fit anything more than pasta bowls. What a snooty, stuck up, San Francisco Snob Hill shit show.

SFO has a competitive restaurant scene with a lot of great choices and this really doesn’t hit the mark. Decent Italian in a sub-par atmosphere. The staff was not welcoming, friendly or attentive. There was a little wait for a table on a week night and there is no where to sit/stand so you’re stuck on the sidewalk — bring a jacket if it is cool in the evening.

Another trip to San Francisco just to try different types of food. It’s different to compare LA food with SF food. I’m a big fan of pasta and I saw this on Unilocal and it was close to the hotel I was staying at, so I decided to give it a try. The restaurant is smaller than I expected, but this place was actually really cute and quiet. I got here at 6:30 and there wasn’t a wait at all. We were seated to a small table for two. It was pretty dim inside, but they had a lil candle on the table for a bit of light. It’s a bit fancy. They give you some bread with butter while you wait for your meal. I’m not sure what kind of bread it was but one of them tasted it. It seems like a muffin like bread. I ordered a Spaghetti Alla Carbonara. It was really delicious. It cost $ 12.75, but then I think it was worth it. It was really good. The pasta wasn’t hard which I prefer soft speghetti and the sauce was good with the little bits of bacon I believe or some kind of meat. My boyfriend got Trancia Di Calamari. It’s a calamari steak and it cost $ 17.95, which we think wasn’t reallt worth it. He didn’t really like the steak because the sauce they had for it was really sour which made it taste a bit weird. Other than the sauce being sour, the calamari wasn’t that bad. It also came with some pasta and pea. When they serve you the meal. they ask if you want cheese or pepper. The service here is really great. They would come around giving us water and asking if everything is okay. The server was very friendly and attentive. I would definitely come back here when I come visit San Francisco.

Local and cozy Italian café. Good Lasagna. Very good spinach, avocado, goat cheese and vinaigrette dressing salad. Reasonable prices. 15 – 20 $

This was one of the worst meals I have ever had. The website and menu looked fantastic so I was looking forward to my meal. I chose a Caesar salad and sole piccata. The Caesar was so heavy on the anchovy(and I like anchovy) that I literally could not swallow it. The salad was mostly hard romaine centers. The leafy parts were mushy. It made me nauseous. The sole was inedible. It was so salty and had far too much lemon. I ate about 3 bites and had to stop. The plusses were the bread and the prosecco. Highly disappointed.

Best. Gnocchi. Ever!!! BF and I were visiting SF and wanted a cute, quiet spot for some Italian and Unilocal led us to Nob Hill Café, exactly what we were looking for. The place was surprisingly packed at 9 pm on a Sunday evening. We took this to be a good sign and endured the 30 minute wait which was SO worth it! We started with the insalata caprese and my BF(the self proclaimed mozzarella expert) said it wasn’t the best mozz he’s had in his life but wasn’t terrible(I enjoyed it!). On to our entrees… I got the gnocchi in the spicy tomato cream sauce and he got the linguine aglio olio. My gnocchi was perfect — the filling was soft and flavorful and the pasta melted in your mouth. I had switched out the sauce from what it normally comes with and was worried that my baby taste buds wouldn’t be able to handle the spicyness of the sauce but it was delicious! Packed with flavor from the garlic and vodka, and not spicy at all. I had a bite of his linguine which was light and creamy at the same time. Both dishes dusted with some freshly grated parmasean cheese was delicious! Our server was also very friendly, attentive, and gave great recommendations on our dishes and substitutions! Can’t wait to come back to Nob Hill Café next time I’m in SF!

Really good food. Saturday afternoon 12:30PM. I was surprised at the snarky service. Been here a few times. Just wasn’t pleased with the man or lady who flitted by a couple times. My tea ran out with no refill. The lady made some comment about me eating everything but a scrap of bread and sauce. Just found the experience a little insulting considering I spent $ 20 for a bowl of penne and indifferent service.

Great spot for a reasonably priced, delicious meal on Nob Hill, only other options are the Hopkins, Fairmont and Huntington, all very nice but very pricey. Nob Hill Café only a 3 minute walk from Grace Cathedral. Only downside is that they do not take reservations so need to get there early before the evening dinner rush, if you have limited time for dinner. Four of us had wine/beer, shared two apps, 2 sole entrees, 2 pasta, shared 2 desserts with coffee, $ 200 including gratuity… great deal.

Very cute little authentic Italian place. When I say little, I mean it. We were there on Saturday night at 8pm and had to wait 20 minutes, a sure sight that this place is popular. Our waitress was wonderful, we ordered right away. The antipasti is delicious and authentic. I had the lasagna and hubby had the carbonara. Both delicious. And the chocolate gelato was to die for a well. Spent about $ 60, had Sprite and Sparkling lemonade to drink

This place is ok, food not really worth the wait, but it’s a really cute dining experience. This place is always packed! After two years of living in the neighborhood, I’ve only eaten here twice, while I’ve tried to eat here at least 5 times and found the wait too long. It has an old world charm all around — being close to the Grace Cathedral and Huntington park. Sitting at the window looking outside will make you feel like you’re in Europe. Of the two times we visited, we ordered: — calamari and beans salad: Salad was standard, but too acidic. — margherita pizza: standard, not impressive — penne bettola: spicy tomato cream sauce. also just standard, wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. — Trancia di Calamari — calamari steak. it was a bit too breaded. Standard European way of cooking it with capers and white wine. The pasta that came with it was quite bad, though. Overall, I think the food is fine, nothing special. It feels like the American taste of Europe in the 80s, where people liked the creamy sauces and buttery dishes. I think this place is going to stay popular and I’m happy to see that happen. But as the city has higher and higher standard for food, they might have to start upgrading their food to satisfy people’s changing palate.

Will not be giving Nob Hill Café a third chance. It took us almost three years to give it a 2nd, and now I remember why. Came in on a Saturday night, place was packed, which I expected. Wine while we waited helped, but tasted stale. What we tried: + Beet salad — really tasty and a healthy portion of beets, candied walnuts, and cheese. yum! — Vodka sauce didn’t have much flavor, and wasn’t as creamy as we’d hoped. Also, dish would have been better with some sort of protein. — Major disappointment of the night was the risotto. Two days later and I’m still thinking about how awful it was. It was a heaping pile of extremely dried rice and tasteless chicken(looked like the kind you buy pre-cooked from Trader Joe’s). We mentioned this to our waiter who took the plate away without saying much. They brought out a new dish which was laughable, but also insulting. The dried rice was now floating in a pool of questionable liquid. This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had lately. Half due to the awfulness of the dish, and half due to the fact that our waiter was so apathetic about it all. Not trying to get too dramatic, but I really was frustrated… a place like this should respect food and diners much more than what we experienced.

A small, quaint neighbourhood restaurant in the middle of Nob Hill that serves surprisingly good Italian food. My friend and I tried the Gnocchi Bolognese and the Fettuccine alla Vongole. I absolutely loved the fettuccine, the taste of white wine was strong, while there was an ample amount of clams. The gnocchi bolognese was also quite good and I liked the meat sauce. I wish they would give bread during lunch though, as the sauce would go so well with it. I did feel that the pasta did not stand out against the many many Italian restaurants in town, but this place offers relatively good value and serving size for the price. The brunch menu looks pretty delicious too, and I’m excited to go back and try!

Really disappointed that this place fell so short of expectations. Sure, it’s cute and the staff is friendly enough that our carry-out experience was pleasant but the salad was a study in wither and salt; sad and greasy enough that we gave up after a fork’s worth each. The pizza was okay, a forgettable but basically decent margherita. In hindsight, I wouldn’t have hiked the few blocks up Taylor to dine here when other well-reviewed options were closer.

Ambiance: Cute, quaint little restaurant. We didn’t wait long to be seated, but we did come earlier in the evening, closer to 6. If you have a group larger than 4 I’d definitely call first. This place has a decent amount of small tables but not a lot of space to push them together for a large group. Service: Service was good. They were quick and attentive. Food: –Antipasti Mistoa: assortment of vegetables, prosciutto & fresh mozzarella. A great start to the meal that seemed relatively healthy and filling. This appetizer is for 2 people and served cold. –Tortellini Romana: I didn’t hate this dish, but I’m looking forward to trying another in the future. I heaped on the cheese and added some salt which helped. Overall, I thought the dining experience was nice but the food didn’t blow me away. I’d like to go back to try some other dishes.

Takeaway: Don’t go for the French Toast but try the omelettes! Nob Hill Café was open on New Years’ Day and hit the spot after a night out. We waited about 20 minutes because we had a party of five. It’s a small place. We were seated next to the door(which was great because we got some sun), but our fifth person sat next to the door and was constantly having to close the door when people walked in. Food: We ordered from the brunch menu. I ordered the French Toast(with a side of potatoes and a cup of coffee. I also tried some of their prawn and avocado omelette(comes with a side of potatoes and cornbread). The French Toast was mediocre at best. There was no powdered sugar and it did not live up to my expectations. The omelette tasted great and I wish I ordered that. The potatoes tasted slightly bland. I really enjoyed the coffee. If I come again, I would go for an omelette(many choices) or try something on the lunch menu. Service: Service was the best thing about this place. Most places aren’t open for brunch on New Years’ Day so this was in a great location(we celebrated and stayed near Union Square). The wait was significantly shorter than we expected. The waitress was amazing. She greeted us warmly at the door and invited us in. She got us excited about the food and checked up on us without feeling overbearing. She made the experience. Other Notes: 1. None of us ordered the lunch dishes, but the aroma of Italian food made us really hungry. 2. Our party of five was a bit big. Four people max.

Nob Hill Café is a pretty small café that fills its seats up pretty darn fast. I’m convinced that it’s pretty popular. The guests may have been regulars, tourists, or even just people like us in the area looking for some great food to chow down on. We sat in front of the restaurant for about 10 – 15 minutes because the restaurant wasn’t ready to seat us. We had some issues with the wait staff, so all in all, the service would be the reason why I can’t give it a five star review. Once we were seated, everything on the menu looked interesting and appetizing. I ordered the tortellini romana and my friend ordered the chicken parmesan, lasagne, and potato goulash. I tasted them all and everything was great. I was just satisfied that I got a taste of the other dishes so that I know what to order the next time I come back. Overall, the food was delicious. I have pictures of my tortellini and I remember how good it tasted and my friends who also tasted it reminisce of how wonderful it tasted. If you aren’t a patient person when it comes to customer service, might want to take a pass. I would recommend Nob Hill Café to anybody that enjoys great Italian food with decent portion sizes.

Nice cozy café in one of SF’s best neighborhoods. We came in for a Sunday afternoon brunch and were seated within 10 minutes. We ordered the gnocchi bolognese and the lime-tequila chicken omelette. The gnocchi totally live up to the hype — the sauce was meaty and savory, and the gnocchi were soft and melted in your mouth. The omelette was also excellent, with juicy chicken, fresh avocado and a great side of roast potatoes. For dessert, we had the spumoni with pistachio gelato try-it. This was a well-balanced dessert, with the pistachio, mocha, and gelato layers blending together to create a delicious flavor profile. Overall, I’d highly recommend this place, and since I live pretty close by, I’ll definitely be back soon.
