OTG: 3rd St. and Berry Organizer website: Hours: Sundays 11am-3pm up to 4 food trucks China Basin residents and workers are lucky to have this new truck stop within walking distance. Also good for bikers visiting the area. But not convenient for anyone driving due to lack of parking(except for those coming on game days). For public transportation, Muni metro stops in front of the ballpark at 2nd street(one block away), and several buses stop by the Caltrain station at 4th and Townsend(2 blocks away). It’s been 4 weeks already, and the food trucks are finding out the hard way that this hidden little street right next to the AT&T ballpark, is a dead zone on non-game days. Only 2 trucks were brave enough to signup for the pod last Sunday. And only a few customers came to buy lunch. So far this venue hasn’t attracted the large crowds often seen at other local neighborhood OTGs. While I waited for my food order, only a few customers trickled in to see the food trucks. A pair of lady joggers stopped to get lunch here, 2 ballpark staff in orange shirts arrived separately to buy BBQ, then a man in a bike, and a student with a backpack. All looked happy to see no lines. Probably not a profitable day for the trucks, and lots of leftover food. Seems to me that most of this area’s SUV-driving condo residents are not food truck fans. Or maybe they’re not aware about this OTG event yet, or perhaps many would rather eat brunch at a sit down restaurant, who knows. In my opinion, it would be a different story if the event was held on a weekday instead. If so, I’d imagine that hordes of hungry office workers would pack this spot for lunch. Note that the trucks park on Berry street, not 3rd. OTG has the bad custom of naming their sites with the cross street first. For example, similarly at OTG5M(5th and Minna), the food trucks park on Minna, not on Fifth. No idea if there’s any inclination to rename this spot as «3B» in the future. I chatted briefly with the OTG staff person, who hoped it’d get busier on game days. The problem I see is that according to the SF Giants schedule, few home games happen on Sundays. The vast majority of home games are on weekday evenings. Sunday June 23, 2013 @1pm will be the first SF Giants home game for this OTG. July has the most Sundays with 3 home games(7/7, 7/21, and 7⁄28), followed by 2 home games for both August(8⁄11 and 8⁄25) and September(9⁄8 and 9⁄29). That means only 8 game days with OTG trucks. Not sure that it makes economic sense for food trucks to sign up for the rotation in a not yet popular pod, and risk losing income(and wasted leftover food), just for a chance to get one of the coveted 8 game days. ** Update: this location CLOSED after the 7÷28÷13 game day.
