David is great! I took classes with him for a couple of months back in the fall, and he was friendly, knowledgable, and above all tailored his lessons to suit what I wanted to learn. He has a great background in theory, and helps you pick up basics through quick and helpful exercises, but also helped me learn some songs I wanted to play for my daughter, as well as strumming patterns /styles to help learn songs like those in the future. A great choice for lessons!

I took a few classes with David and it was totally worth it. I had bought a guitar thinking I could teach myself with all the Youtube tutorials out there. But after a while I lost motivation and my guitar sat lonely and unused for months. That’s when I decided to give David a call, and by the first lesson I instantly felt excited to play again. He’s personable, patient, and encouraging. He gave me some great beginner tips, and gave me some homework to do between lessons that really made me focus on building fundamentals. I highly recommend getting guitar lessons with David!

I’m only writing this because of David’s response to T.C.‘s review. I had a similar experience, around December of 2013. David and I emailed back and forth for a couple weeks to settle on a time and place for the first lesson. The day before, I emailed him my address and he responded, confirming he’d see me the next day at 4PM. That time came and went, and I texted David to make sure he wasn’t having a problem finding my apartment. After an hour or two, I texted him and asked if he wanted to reschedule, understanding that things happen and plans change. Never heard back, or ever again. In fact, I was kind of worried. For a long time, I kept an eye out on Google and this Unilocal page to see if he resurfaced and just to make sure he was OK. I was afraid he was in some horrible accident and there I was cursing him for missing a guitar lesson. Honestly, I wouldn’t have written this review if David hadn’t reacted so inappropriately to T.C.‘s feedback. Yes, I also didn’t have a chance to evaluate his guitar playing or teaching skills, but only because he never gave me that chance. That’s all part of providing a service and owning a business. You made a mistake, and that’s ok as long as you own it and treat your customers with the same respect and fairness that you seem to be asking for.

I had arranged for weekly private lessons with David but unfortunately he cancelled the first week then was a no-show the next two weeks. First week he was under the weather, very understandable so we decided to get started the following week. After waiting for 20 minutes I emailed him and he replied saying the appointment was showing up in his calendar for the wrong day. Ok. I decided to give the benefit of the doubt and we reconfirmed to get things started the following week(3rd week). Again I waited and after 30 minutes emailed him. I have never heard back. He didn’t call, email or text me to let me know. Instead just didn’t show up. I would definitely not recommend wasting your time.

David is an excellent instructor. He’s really great at teaching the music theory behind how to play a guitar. And he’s great at giving you simple finger drills and other exercises to get a beginner use to playing guitar.

David is a fabulous teacher! Very knowledgeable and teaches at your level, whatever it may be. I had some experience playing guitar before I took lessons with David, and feel like I learned more in the 3 months I had in a year of previous lessons. I unfortunately had to stop taking lessons because life got busy, but I plan to begin lessons again soon. Just try him out a couple times and see what you think. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

David’s knowledge of music and demeanor of calm and patience combine to get you into playing beyond where you thought you could go. He has taught my son and myself for the last many months, and we are both loving it. I couldn’t believe how much we both learned from him. Not only that, but he is an exceptional musician in his own right — and brings his years of experience and talent to his role as a teacher. I could not, could NOT, recommend anyone more highly. Working with him is a treat.

I took private beginner lessons with David before moving out of the country — he was extremely accommodating and patient despite my erratic schedule which prevented me from practicing as often as I needed to. David is an incredibly talented musician and a wonderful teacher for any skill level. He taught me the basics and introduced me to valuable lessons to steadily increase my skills. He also has a great taste in music and in addition learning from him each week, I loved picking up recommendations for new artists and bands to listen to.

I took private lessons from David for a brief period before moving out of town. I started as a complete novice. But David is an excellent instructor and he fine tuned his lessons to adapt to my skill level and took into account the limited time I had to practice. He gave me great tips on how to practice playing different notes, and gave me increasingly sophisticated finger exercises to help me get used to switching between different chords/notes. Introduced me to different apps I could use to practice, tune my guitar. And he was also very willing to share the more pedantic details of music theory on paper. David made the whole experience really fun and I learned a lot more in those few classes than I though I would and was even able to read the notes off of internet and play my favorite song in the end :-) I would gladly recommend David to any one wanting to learn how to play guitar.

David is SUPER awesome, patient and talented! I can feel he enjoys music and devotes himself into teaching music more than any teachers I met! I am brand new to guitar, and I learn things pretty slow. Also, I have been afraid to playing music for almost 19 years(because of my bad piano lesson experience when I was 4). But David’s class totally melts my fear to learning music — I am challenged as well as encouraged. He has his unique, and strategic work sheet, and gives me some«homework» to practice every week according to how much progress I make. Also, he explains very well some music theories, finger tips, why I should practice in certain ways etc., making me feel every minute worth it, and every class is more than enjoyable :) Definitely recommended to everyone!

David was very helpful. I had never played before, and he gave me a few worksheets with drills to get my fingers used to the guitar. Also went over some music theory stuff. He was very open to teaching in the direction that I wanted to go in; I imagine that he does different things with every client based on what their personal goals are. Also, he would come to my house which is great.

I learned more from David about music in a year of lessons than I did from 8 years of music classes growing up. He is unique as a teacher in that he covers music theory topics in detail before translating them to guitar. It really helps to know concepts before playing, rather than learning the instrument on just a physical basis. I truly feel like I can appreciate music better because of taking lessons with David. Despite focusing on theory, he also shreds on guitar, and is able to play pretty much everything we worked on together flawlessly. He is able to teach as fast as you want, and does a great job of keeping lessons challenging without being stressful. I would still be taking lessons if I weren’t moving away from the Bay Area.

David is easy to learn from and patient. His explanations of how to pull things together are very helpful to help get the bigger picture of playing. It’s been great learning guitar from him.

My boyfriend and I signed up for private guitar lessons with David and we have truly enjoyed every minute of it! We are both VERY beginners(dont know what a difference is between a chord and a string type of beginners), so David was the perfect teacher to help us out. The highlights being: Lessons: I find playing the guitar very intimidating, and David changed my mindset! He tailors the class to his student and makes it very approachable, simple and fun! He gives you great homework to practice on your own! He also teaches you not only to play but how to read music and the mechanics behind it all. Price: Very reasonable and one of the best you will find in SF! Logistics: David comes to your house which makes it very easy to take lessons! He is very accommodating to your schedule and checks in to make sure classes are still on! Experience: Wonderful experience and would definitely recommend to ANY beginner who wants to start learning how to play guitar! David is EXCELLENT!

Learning the guitar can be quite intimidating. If it weren’t for David, I probably would have given up. He makes learning the guitar basic and easy to understand. Although it’s a lot of hard work and takes a lot of practice, David is there to make it fun and worth your time. I would recommend David to anyone trying to learn an instrument. He is very flexible with practice times and can come to your house(way more convenient). His prices are also the best I’ve seen in SF! If you are looking for a teacher this is the guy!

How could you give David less than five stars? He’s a gifted musician and composer and we are lucky to have found him. He is the first music teacher that my kids haven’t complained about. He works with all three of my children, ages 14, 10 and 5 and tailors the guitar lessons to each age and temper. He is calm and patient and somehow though the pace of our life is nuts and practicing time limited, my kids’ skills are improving and even better, they are interested in learning more. David is also always on time, which helps us keep our busy schedule straight. He’s a gem. I know how hard it is to find a good teacher, so I am happy to recommend him and save someone the trouble.

David has been teaching my son guitar for six months now and he has made so much progress its unbelievable. I’ve been playing for 10 years(admittedly, with no lessons) and my son has already surpassed me. The price is very reasonable for a home visit and the results are awesome.

I’ve been on and off music for more than ten years. I began with piano like any other Asian girl then moved onto orchestra at school as a violinist. But all these tough music theory and the true essence of music just flew over my head as I attempting to grasp it so many times. It was the same with guitar. I was able to teach myself some chords but it never went any further than that. I joined bands here and there nothing really worked. I finally went back to private lessons after ten years of guitar playing. and David is heaven sent! He has been so helpful. He turned my wishful thinking into something tangible finally. Ever since taking lessons from him, I have been feeling more comfortable with fretboard and the notes before my eyes. I am looking forward to continue this lesson with David until I can explore music as it is! Also, David is so knowledgeable and so approachable. I’d recommend him to any students who are afraid to start music theory. Music is innate and natural but is also something that can be mastered. Anybody who is stuck and frustrated, or is thinking of starting, do it now :)
