Including Pete who operates the SMOG machines. Need your convertible top replaced some new leather seats they do it all with a smile. Even sell your car for you.

Let me point out something of relevance. To some people, a car is a mere instrument of transportation and as such, they drive a Toyota Prius, Honda Accord or some other cookie cutter car. Look at the cars inside Roger and Mike’s shop, vintage and newer Porsches, Bmws and Mercedes Benzes. These are vehicles which need knowledgeable people and require specialized maintenance and repair. Their owners are generally passionate about their cars and in life, for such people a good mechanic is on par with a good personal doctor. I consider myself fortunate to have a relationship with this shop. Roger and Mike are honest and competent and the crew they have upstairs know their stuff. If you need a tail light bulb, go to an Auto Zone or other parts store and for a couple of dollars your problem could be solved, leave these professionals alone! On the other hand if your beloved fine car starts acting funny, this shop can make it good as new. While they are not «cheap» their prices are fair. People who drive nice cars and are used to dealer prices should check this place out, they will be glad they did.

I am just updating my review of 2009. I guess it says it all that I’ve stayed with R & M for over a decade. Recently, my car had a complicated problem that was hard to diagnose and solve. Mike actually took my old junk heap home with him one night so he could replicate the problem (I don’t garage the car). Wow! And Mike only charged me once though it took a couple of fixes to solve.
As I’ve said before, R & M might cost a bit more, but Mike and Rodger are mechanics you can really trust. They love cars, and they know cars inside and out. And they are really, really nice guys. I would never take my car anywhere else.

I had a problem with my Dodge Sprinter Van. When I arrived and explained the problem the man said he would check for «codes» with his computer. As I watched he couldn’t find the place under the dash to plug in. I told him to wait for a co-worker.When another worker came he said my computer wasn’t communicating with their computer.
They said to schedule an appt. for eletrical check. When I took to another shop they found the problem with no issues with the «computer» Last year I took the van there to change a EGR valve 1300.00 (very high price!) Never again!!!

I went to this auto service to fix my break light. When I asked the guy, Roger, who was cleaning/​wiping a car in their shop, «can you help me fix my break light?» His response was rude, smug, snobby, stuck up, and hurtful for no reason. He said, «no we don’t touch cars like yours,» like a puffed-​up jerk just because my car isn’t a cool/​expensive vehicle. I just needed some help fixing my break light, I’m an international student and don’t know really where to go to fix little things like a break light and I just went to the first place I saw. When I asked roger again for some help, he said, «I said no now get the hell out of the shop.» I didn’t understand why he was being so rude and ugly to me for just asking. When I asked to talk to his manager or the owner of the shop, he then just ignored me. I felt very wronged and honestly wouldn’t recommend anyone to go to this place. They clearly have no respect for people and have no kindness or customer service and judge people for not having nice cars and refuse help to those who don’t have expensive cars. In the 9 months I’ve studied in America, I have never come across anyone so mean until today when I went to this shop. He treated me like dirt for no reason at all and all I needed was a little help with a break light. My advice is stay away from this place.

They know what they are doing, and do it very well. Great customer service.
I have had my vehicle serviced here for years, and I keep going back because they take excellent care of their customers.

Took my truck into Smog Haus (part of R&M) this morning and left satisfied. Peter was on time and had me out of there in ~20 minutes. About $ 80 is a little pricey but not for the convenience.

These guys are great !!! They have been taking great care of my car for many years. I trust them. They are very thorough and Mike is a great guy. Very personable staff and I will keep using them for as long as I own My car… I highly recommend them.

I have been using R&M for seven years, but have noticed a change the last two years with a major disappointment in their recent repair. I have used R&M for regular maintenance and repairs on a 100K+ old Benz. The most recent repair was complex, but the final cost was $ 500 over estimate and the scheduling stretched from ten days to one month. This is my second experience with costs over estimates and no notice of changing completion dates. I was left without the ability to manage our family’s shifting travel needs, and short footed on financial planning. This is a change from their earlier management practice, and a true disappointment to experience.
I think Mike and Roger are good for smaller maintenance and repair maintenance jobs. I’m now uncertain about their ability to handle a larger customer base and more complex jobs.

Mike is an honest and very knowledgable man. He worked on my car quickly, did an excellent job and charged a fair price. I highly recommend.

took my car for pre-​buying inspection, i didnt want to go (too much bling for a under 3k car) but the new owner insisted.
came in … an employee walks past me i smile… he is. whatever.
waited for 15 – 20 mins standing next to my car.
a guy comes to me saying what you need, i said wanted to get an inspection done
he says what inspection !! i said vehicle inspection
its goin to be 150 $
i said ok
he says come back in 2 – 3 hrs
i come back after 3hrs only to know that my car was still sitting there.
OK If you are not busy with something else and you promise someone a time.
the inspection takes no more than ½ hr.
ok so i am pissed but theres no choice i am here now.
another guy comes to me questioning why was i there.
i explain everthing again. god damn really !
he takes the car for a spin with a cold engine revs it hard, i can hear the motor around the block very loud. as if he was taking out his frustration or something.
i was like you are not a race car test driver.
ok comes back starts working on another car waiting period part II starts…
goes back to my car takes a quick look comes back and says what do you want me to do with this car am like what !!
this things corroded and rusted everywhere, how is it possible being a california registered car all its life and visually there wasnt any rust at all…
writes down a horrible description about the car and scares away the new owner to a point where no only he wont pick up my phone but he wouldn’t pay for the inspection as he promised to.
ok So i take my perfectly normal daily driver for a general health check to these idiots and i am interrogated why isnt the car a Garage queen which has been licked all around. and on top of that i pay 150 $ for all this mess.
well i sold the car to another buyer who understood the car very well inside out.
again i understand you are gurus in nitpicking stuff but my car was no roll royce.
treat every car differently. or better yet just close your shop doors.
the staff service are very rude they just try to scare you away by their behavior pricing and the attitude.

Finding a trustworthy mechanic is like finding your soulmate. In the process, many of us elicit the help of our family. My family has been bringing their cars (German & Japanese) to Roger and Mike (via Albert, who’s also there now) for over 15 years. Are minor services a bit more than the quick-​stop shops? Yes. But my father always said, «You get what you pay for…» In this case, it’s iNTEGRITY!
NOTE: It is kinda strange that the negative reviewers mainly do just that…

I was referred to R & M by a good friend. It’s difficult to find a trustworthy mechanic after having moved from OC so I had to rely on word of mouth. They service all types of cars and are honest. They’ll tell you straight up what your car needs and what you can put off for a while.

I know it’s a cliché, but finding a trustworthy mechanic who will not throw automotive vocabulary at you just so he can milk you for more money is still very difficult to find. I always feel safe bringing my car to Mike. He will still toss some mechanic lingo when he’s explaining what’s wrong with my car, but I know that I can trust him.
He gets your car done in time, and will never do anything outside of what you originally brought your car in for without talking with you first. He is down to earth and knowing that this is a family business makes it more reputable.

My friend recommended me to bring my M3 to get it serviced. I baby my car so I usually get an oil change more often then needed. They told me that is it was not necessary and I appreciated there honesty. I told them to go ahead and change the oil anyways.
They are honest and the shop was very clean. I would take my car there again.

I’ve had my cars (from a 1970 Toyota Celica, 2 Nissan Sentras, and now my 325 BMW) serviced by R & M for as long as I can remember. I trust them and would never bring my car to anyone else. Roger and Mike will tell you in advance what’s needed and how much it would cost before they do any work. The customer service is excellent and although a little on the pricey side, it is worth every penny. Thanks Roger and Mike!

I’m using R&M for five years now. And I will still bring my cars to them for service and maintenance. Rather than going to those ripoff dealers. (Mike and Roger) They charged fair and very reasonable. They will not change the parts if its not yet needed to be replace not like some dealers out there.

I broke down not far from here so went because it was the closest thing and I really wish I had gone anywhere else in the area. I had a terrible experience all around…
When I walked in the first person I saw just looked at me and kept doing whatever it was he was doing (probably because I wasn’t in some expensive new car).
I was told it would cost me $ 140 to fix my car, which I stupidly didn’t question because I needed it for work that day. The only thing that ended up being wrong with it was a busted hose and it was super low on engine coolant. Any other place would have charged me less than half of what they did for that and done it in a quarter of the time.
It took Mike an hour and a half to even start on my car (I suppose because mopping the floor was more important). When he finally got to it I heard him saying what a piece of shit car it was (he obviously didn’t see me sitting right behind him).
I will never go back and wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Grumpy and careless mechanics.
Had an oil change here — no problem there, however upon 1 hour after leaving — my car no longer would start. Took car to another mechanic who discovered that the starter cabling had been disconnected my truck’s starter. There is no need to touch the starter’s cabling during an oil change. Expensive, slow and badly located.

Brought in my car for an oil change and I get a call that say saying I need $ 2000 worth of work… new tires, brakes, struts, driving belt, etc. On the quote half the charge was for parts and the other half, the labor.
The mechanic actually showed me the car (I am a complete novice with car mechanics) to show me the damage, but of course I have no way of knowing whether this is normal wear and tear or if I actually need work.
My car only had 47K miles on it which is early for this major work. So I took it to Action Auto Care for a 2^nd opinion (see their reviews esp. regarding Robert who owns the shop and has built his business on integrity). And his opinion — all I need is new tires. All the other problems ID’ed by R&M were work I wouldn’t need for a year, if at all — the strut for example was leaky but still working totally fine according to his balance test, and its a comfort rather than functionality issue anyway so I’d just be spending $$$ for nothing to get it replaced.
Anyhow the deal was sealed for me at R&M when I went to pay for the oil change and the guy tries to charge me $ 110. I said WHAT?! I usually only pay $ 40 or so. So he says, tell you what I’ll charge you $ 60. I mean, what was the extra $ 50 for? And he didn’t even put the standard sticker on my windshield telling me when to get my next oil change.

I found this business on Google and took my old 240D there to repair a vacuum pump venting oil. When I went in and explained the problem, the person at the desk said «Well, it looks like you know more about your car than I do, how about I give you the tools and you fix it yourself.»
Rude and not helpful, I found someone south of Market street who was considerate, helpful and did exactly what I needed at Contech Automotive.
I would never go near this shop again.

I have been a customer of Roger, Mike (that’s the R&M) and Albert (AVR) for nearly 8 years. I drive a Porsche and these guys have always taken excellent care of me.
R&M is a family-​owned business and is based out of a 12,000+ square foot garage that used to be owned by British Motors. If you’re just looking for an oil change for your cheap Chinese import don’t bother going to R&M. But if you have a European car (especially if it’s older) check these guys out. While they’re not the least expensive in town they are fair, very honest and they always do quality work. Tell them that James on Unilocal sent you.
