I have been a fan of Roy’s for a long time, mostly in Hawaii though but the experience I had last night made me realize I need to patronize the San Francisco location more. The service from the waiter was good and the food was great. But the personal service we received from the manager, James, was awesome. Immediately after being seated, he came to welcome us and thank us for coming. We never had such a warm welcome. He engaged in conversation with us, ensuring we had everything we needed and just made our stay so enjoyable. Thanks James. We look forward to coming back soon! Most people may think the most important thing in a restaurant is great food but great service comes hand in hand with a delicious meal. FYI this is my first and only Unilocal review so it shows how much I appreciate James. Thx James, you are a great asset to Roy’s!

Another great experience at Roy’s. I had the filet mignon, medium rare. It came with some veggies on the side. I have ordered this before. It never fails to impress. PROTIP: Ask for more sauce on the side. They give you a wine vinegar reduction and a mayo/mustard sauce for the veggies. If you ask for more on the side, they give you two little bowls to dip in. Its delicious that way! You can never have too much sauce. We also had the filet mignon skewer appetizers. So it was a filet mignon meal all around. PROTIP: They can handle large parties. And if the party is large enough, they will do a custom menu.

I had my birthday dinner here. The butter fish flavor had changed. It used to be full of flavor and you could actually taste the flavor of the butterfish now they mask it with too much salsa type flavoring. The waiter was nice to write happy birthday on my chocolate soufflé plate

Ben was a fantastic server. Can’t say the same about his partner server Joey, who was super rude to us. We came in for the Aloha happy hour and the host sat us in the section next to the bar. Joey came by and told us that in the future, we shouldn’t sit in this section if we want to order from the bar menu. I let him know that we sat here because the Host sat us here. If Joey wanted us to move to the bar, he should have just told us and we would have. Instead he proceeded to take our order and didn’t write anything down. He had to come back and ask us what our drinks were again. Then he ignored us the rest of the night and didn’t give us any service at all. When Joey took the order at the next table, we noticed he was super friendly and even told them he would be back with his notepad, which he didn’t even bother when he first took our order. Luckily, Ben came to save the day. He was friendly and asked us how we were doing. He made conversation with us and was genuinely helpful and kind. Ben was what we expected from a top notch server at a top notch restaurant like Roy’s. Thank you to Ben for making our experience better than the way Joey made us feel. I am so disappointed in Roy’s. This is my 3rd time here and I’ve never been treated this way. There’s lots of great restaurants in SF and Roy’s does not need to be so pretentious. Needless to say, we will not be coming back.

My husband and I had been to the Ko Olina location on Oahu for our honeymoon in September and loved it. We still had money on a gift card from a wedding gift so we thought we’d relive our honeymoon and eat at the SF location on our weekend trip. We were seated immediately and the server was very attentive the entire time. The presentation of the food was beautiful(I had the scallops and my husband had the Seafood sampler) but I was a bit let down with my dinner. The scallops in Hawaii were more flavorful and I did not like the pork loin under each scallop. I believe in Oahu the scallops were on little hash browns which was much better. Although I could be confusing this with another restaurant’s scallops because I ate that a lot there. My drink, the hummingbird, also just tasted like fizzy water, not a flavorful cocktail. I’m probably done with Roy’s since we’ve had it twice and I’d want to try new things. If I was going to visit one of their locations though, I’d probably stick with one in Hawaii.

I’m giving Roy’s 2 stars(maybe bump it up to 2.5 for service) for my recent dining experience. Having gone to Roy’s in Maui/Oahu/Kauai/Pebble Beach and San Francisco(for a second time in over a decade), I can see that the food has definitely gone down a few notches. Perhaps it’s because there are so many more restaurants out there pushing the envelope of creativity in the Bay Area that they are now getting lost in the mix. We started with hamachi tartare(favorite app of night), beef tartare(was tasteless), and ahi poke(good). For our entrees, we chose a few 4 course pre-fixe dinners: seared duck breast with roasted cherries and broccolini was my favorite(perfect pairing of juicy duck and slightly sweet/tart cherries), the Hawaiian Ono was very dry(overcooked). We also ordered filet mignon with bearnaise sauce(enjoyed it), and the seared ahi entrée(also enjoyed it). Funny how a seafood based restaurant serves better turf than surf. We were seated on the mezzanine level, but at a table with a broken light bulb… So basically we were blind and could not read the menus. Our server gave us another candle(didn’t help). So basically we had to break out our iPhone flashlights(not cool) to read the menus. Sorry for the dark photos… Service was very friendly, but slow and non-attentive. With such a variety of hits and misses in one sitting, I can’t make myself rate them any higher. It pains me to say that I will not be back.

Where do I even begin… first, Chef Edgar Agbayani is so full of personality and positive energy and that adds to the food experience being incredible at Roy’s. We came for a company cooking class and this one was one heckuva fun and delicious experience! Service was impeccable, the seating area during a busy lunch hour was set aside for us with everything in place and the hot-stoves set up with placements for everyone in place. There were several different courses, beef, chicken and vegetarian. I chose the beef and it was a steak which was to die-for. The seasoning was spot-on in providing the flavors to come out and the quality was definitely there. Chef Agbayani was constantly walking around and giving us cooking tips and a hand on how to properly sear or prepare what we made which included the following courses: 1. Lettuce wraps with clear noodles and chicken in amazing teriyaki sauce 2. Surf and turf steak and shrimp with vegetable stir fry and glazed sauce 3. Bread pudding with ice cream on top These were all cooked by us so jokingly Chef Agbayani said he has, «no responsibility for the taste» but I would like to beg to differ… he DID contribute to the taste as his team had prepped all the food wonderfully for everyone(even a sous vide prep for the chicken dish to break down the collagen and make it incredibly tender/moist). So the cooking was quick, fast and absolutely tasty. The lettuce wraps were my favorite since it was refreshing yet filling, sort of comfort food-esque. And don’t forget their Roy’s Cabernet Sauvignon! The red wine that is made of dreams and is both sharp and unforgettable, they came by our tables and provided superb service. The entire staff here were humble, nice and always had a smile on their face. I had a great experience here at Roy’s and will be coming back shortly to dine in and get the full experience(and not have to cook it myself, though I did a great job at it if I may say so myself). 5-Stars to Chef Agbayani and his team! Also incredible to note that the restaurant(due to Roy Yamaguchi’s influence and leadership) contributes a lot of time to charity and benefitting the neighborhood, that’s rare in this day and age for a restaurant not just to focus on good food but doing good deeds. huge props to them all for their paying-it-forward! Come support them by eating their incredible dishes!

I wish I could eat more meals at Roy’s. I hadn’t been to this location in years, but with irresistible Hawaii gravity I was pulled back in the moment I was performing at Yerba Buena. In between shows I dragged another performer friend to sit at Roy’s bar and enjoy their happy hour menu(and a few drinks). Even with absurd makeup and hair, we were treated with the most respect and kindness from the bartenders and host staff. We both had a Hawaiian Martini and a Drunken Mule each, they were fantastic. I used to find the Martini too sweet, but this one was very nicely mixed. The Drunken Mule, however, was FANTASTIC. Like, dangerous-I-want-six-of-these fantastic. As usual, the food was wonderful, we shared a fried sushi-type thing, and then I enjoyed the kobe sliders while she had the mac and cheese and broccolini. I maintain that Roy’s-owned Roy’s restaurants are still a notch above, but this franchised branch is still pretty fantastic. I’ll definitely be back!

The short ribs were mouth watering! What I ordered: — Veggie spring roll — Lobster bisque — Braised short ribs of beef — Pineapple upside down cake The hostess and manager were awesome! I thought my reservation was at 6:30pm, and had a hard time looking for parking. Turns out, it was at 6:00pm and even though I was late by 45 minutes, they were super accommodating and still found a table for me. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me at the moment but I thought spring rolls were the cold ones, but I should’ve remembered that it was under the hot section. Still yummy, so no complaints here. I also told our waiter that it was a birthday and she added in the happy birthday in chocolate for the pineapple upside down cake. The pineapple upside down cake was definitely worth the 20 minute wait since so many other tables ordered that dessert too.

Went here for a work outing and was not impressed. The cocktails are terrible. I highly recommend drinking wine or something not mixed. The food was okay to whatever. Nothing was terrible but nothing was outstanding. The closest things that came to being good were the burgers(sliders were kind of salty) and the various sushi rolls. The lobster potstickers sound unique but it’s a waste of lobster. The service was nice but very slow. Not worth the money, not a solid chain.

Roy’s in SF has always been and will continue to be my favorite spot to celebrate all of our milestones and life events. Last night, we celebrated my 37th birthday and it was excellent as every birthdays have been in the past. I feel that the older I get, the more life continues to give me additional reasons to appreciate it. Our table was set up so nicely with a «Happy 37th Birthday» framed card and they even placed a few of my favorite purple orchids all over the table. Food was great and service was impeccable, as we’ve always been treated like family by everyone at Roy’s. Our waiter, William, was very attentive and sweet. The new managing partner, Donny, came by to wish me a happy birthday and chatted with us a bit. The chef partner, Edgar, was unavailable – so Chef Yang came by to greet us in his place. As always, they ended my night with a complimentary birthday dessert… I felt like a total princess for the night!

I know, I know, what’s a vegetarian doing at a seafood place… well Roy’s actually does a pretty decent job with it’s vegetarian menu. I also come here because it’s a great spot for business lunches. I work at one of the many large financial firms next door, and whenever I need to sit down and have a proper conversation I suggest this place. I recommend the Tofu Steak. Even though it sounds weird, it tastes amazing. The blend of spices they use combined with the perfectly seasoned rice and boy choy make it an absolute treat. Their vegetarian appetizers are also a delight. Try the inside out sushi and the tofu poke. You won’t be disappointed! Overall great service and great food — whether you’re a vegetarian or not.

I came here last week for dinner with a friend. The atmosphere is pretty, and the staff is great. Had an reservation but came in early and was served fast. Our waitress was great and friendly. I tried the hawaian version of the Moscow mule to drink and it was great. Nice little twist on my favorite drink. I ordered my favorite ahi tuna seared chefs way, and OMG sooo yummy. yahoo

Our experience started off terrible but then got somewhat better. We had a reservation and were celebrating a birthday. We were seated upstairs next to a private party of about 30 screaming drunk people. The waiter was attending to them and didnt bother asking if we wanted to get reseated or take our drink orders till about 15 minutes later. He could tell we were frustrated by having to yell our drink orders because nothing could be heard over the crazy party people. I find it completely shocking that a restaurant of high standards would even offer to sit people near that group when they are trying to enjoy a nice dinner. Nonetheless, we were finally reseated downstairs. We ordered the trio and the filet and shrimp in order to share it all. We also ordered an ebi roll and the truffled bacon mac n cheese. My mom mentioned wanting to try the chocolate soufflé and the waiter said it takes about 20 minutes to make so we places the order then so it could be ready by the time the entrees were done. The food was delicious and came out at a good speed. Everything was fantastic and had great sauces and sides to accompany it. However we came to another issue when we finished the entrees and it was time for dessert. The waiter said the soufflé would be out soon. Thirty minutes later her said four more minutes. Fifteen minutes after that it finally came out. I’m not sure what went wrong… whether he forgot to put the order in, or the dessert got messed up(I know it is a tough thing to make perfectly), but the lack of communication wasn’t great and by the time it finally came we were so tired and ready to go home. It was delicious I can definitely say that but definitely not worth the wait. Overall I’d say the food is worth it but the service needs better work here. Do not seat people if there is an extremely loud private party upstairs and do not tell people their food or dessert is coming soon when it isnt.

Parentals Bday lunch in style, Seems like the main chef at this location shares our last name so why not put our tastebuds in his hands. He did not disappoint, everything was prepped and all our food choices were excellent Let me break down what we had and how it faired in my book. We tried majority of all the signature dishes and some of there appetizers. On the table was a small frame set for both of my parents who both were the birthday celebrants, cute birthday frame. We sampled these appetizers — lobster potstickers — not your normal potstickers that you can buy from costco or your panda express, these potstickers are legit, no chewy/soggy tasting potstickers here, the flavor is something you do not expect the appetizer sampler which included 2 egg rolls, 2 chicken satay kabob style, 2 ribs, and 2 lobster potstickers — all of these choices I would order as a regular plate, maybe not the egg rolls since this would be a normal dish offered at any family party or luncheon. the 2 chicken satay kabob were tender and flavorful, they sat in there peanut based sauce which only added more flavor to the chicken, the ribs were semi sweet slightly charred but made perfect not to sweet not salty, and fall off the bone quality, the lobster rolls again is a must try the main dishes the Misoyaki Butterfish — from a person that prefers steak over all kinds of fish, let me just say out of everything I tried there I would come back just for the butterfish, just the name itself ask why wouldnt you try it, anything with butter has to be good right??? not flaky, no fishy taste, each bite of this fish you yearn for more. Served perfect with a small side of white steamed rice cubed and furikake heavily seasoned to the top of that rice. The fish does sit in a thick soupy baste probably same ingredients it is baked if not simmered in, the butterfish is also topped with there version of salsa which only added more flavor to this already awesome dish the Kobe Loco Moco — the presentation was on point, who does not like 2 fried eggs on top of a kobe patty(huge patty by the way) with rice/furikake drowned in gravy, this was my second plate just because if I see it on the menu why not try it. The loco moco here was just ok, I believe the patty was overcooked for my taste, I would probably come back again and ask for this dish in more of a medium if not medium rare for the patty that is, but other then that the gravy not to salty, gravy again not watery more of the thicker style which is always good, the rice and furikake can’t go wrong. the wife ordered the Roys Trio which included the Hibachi Grilled salmon, The Misoyaki Butterfish, and the roasted Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi Mahi — of the three again the butterfish she loved, the salmon was her second favorite no fishy taste, the salmon sat in a sauce kind of like it was broiled in its own juices, the roasted macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi was her least favorite not to say that she didn’t like it, because all of these choices she would order the individual plates. the parentals ordered these items mom– she stuck with the pre-fixed menu which included a salad, I believe it was the trout was her main entrée and for dessert she had a crème brûlée, she mentioned everything was made perfect pops– stuck with the butterfish also, he also stated his meal was very good brother ordered the Portabello burger again huge patty on a semi large bun, just enough to contain the patty and all of its toppings good place to celebrate your folks birthdays especially when they are really picky about what they eat. I definitely recommend you come out and try this place food ***** that butterfish though!!! price $$$ service ***** very friendly staff, got to meet the chef partner Edgar, in all very good experience coming here to celebrate my parents birthdays

Solid seafood chain. Their grilled scallops were a bit lacking of that crisp that I usually look for in scallops. Their Misoyaki Butterfish was like butta, but betta! It was very rich and smooth in texture. Do get. It’s nice dining and the first time I was here, I had center spot to the TV watching the Giants win, Dynasty. Yay. They have a good bar area as well. Service was courteous.

Spiffy event/party space upstairs with glass windows that overlook the bar and restaurant. It can accommodate a group of about 20 – 30 comfortably at tables, but note: this area is not completely private as the restaurant bathrooms are located on the same floor, and people must pass through the event space to get to them, so there are always people coming and going throughout your meal or event. Speedy food and drink service, and they continuously refill water and beverages without seeming as if they are constantly hovering by the tables. Food presentation — 5 stars. The appetizers such as thai chicken skewers and shrimp are delicately laid on a long platter and garnished with pickled veggies. Even a simple dessert like a chocolate torte with berries appears too pretty to eat. Had the curry chicken as a main, and the flavors are phenomenal. Cooked well-done without being dry or tough, and the light drizzling of sauce did not overwhelm the meat. Generous portion(2 large chicken breasts) as well. Ambient lighting and soft tunes make for a great place to also kick back with a cocktail at the bar, or have a quiet dinner. I’ve been to the Hawaii locations multiple times, and the San Francisco location definitely upholds Roy’s quality of food and service, and the beautiful food presentation.

I came here for lunch with some coworkers on a weekday. We made reservations, but it didn’t seem like it was necessary. The restaurant is pretty big and spacious. Definitely a clasier, more high-end atmosphere. Despite being a Hawaiian fusion restaurant, there was nothing Hawaiian or tropical about the décor. If I hadn’t known what cuisine it was beforehand, I would’ve thought it was some classy steakhouse like Alexander’s. Food here is definitely not cheap, but it’s pretty worth it especially for a special occasion. Most appetizers range from $ 10-$ 15 and entrees average around $ 40. My group ordered the Sunrise Roll as an appetizer to share, and I ordered the Blackened Island Ahi for my entrée and tried some of the Hibachi Grilled Salmon that someone else ordered. Everything was cooked perfectly! And there’s also beef and chicken for you non-seafood people out there. Service was quick and attentive but almost to a level of rudeness. When one person in my group was done with their entrée, the server immediately took away his plate while everyone else was still eating. And I emphasize IMMEDIATELY. There was probably one second between the moment he put his fork down and the moment his plate was whisked away. It felt almost like they were rushing us out even though the restaurant wasn’t even busy. Normally, I don’t really dock points for service, but for a pricier restaurant, I was expecting a more pleasant experience. Overall though, classy ambiance and delicious seafood! I’ll definitely be back if my wallet can afford it. —– –SUNRISEROLL — 4⁄5 [hamachi, salmon, daikon, crispy garlic, miso shoyu sauce] The roll itself is fried, which sounds like it could be gross and greasy, but it was actually really well executed. Not overly fried, no grease, just a nice crispness on the outside of the roll. The fish inside the roll was fresh. Texture wasn’t really new or unique since there are plenty of fried/tempura rolls out there, but the crunchy texture was definitely done better than the average fried roll. The flavor, on the other hand, didn’t impress me — pretty average and expected, but by no means bad. –BLACKENEDISLANDAHI — 5⁄5 [spicy soy mustard butter sauce] MMM seared perfectly rare. The ahi was super fresh and soft in texture, and came with some bok choy and rice seasoned with wakame flakes. The butter sauce was absolutely delicious! Not rich or heavy like the word«butter» might imply, and I never thought mustard would go so well with ahi. Not actually spicy though. Definitely recommend! –HIBACHIGRILLEDSALMON — 5⁄5 [Japanese citrus ponzu sauce] I tried some of my friend’s salmon and would definitely recommend, especially if you love tender, moist, flaky salmon(who doesn’t?!). The sauce was light and citrus-y without being too acidic and went really well with the salmon.

We celebrated our 5 year anniversary here at Roys and the food was delicious! But I’ll start with my experience from beginning to end. We actually took über so my husband and I can drink for our special occasion. We arrived about 15 mins early and they were able to sit us right away. My husband requested a table along the wall. Either a window seat or the table that sat two people. The host said since they already have a table setting that means it’s reserve. There was only one table with a table setting and it was the table for 2. How come we couldn’t sit by the window? I told him it was our anniversary and he took us all the way to the back. As we got seated this guy brought out edamame for us. He actually said something, but he was talking so low and couldn’t really understand him. My husband and I asked each other at the same time about what he said. We both didn’t know and just assumed he we telling us to enjoy. The tables are so close together in the back that we could hear everything the couple next to us were saying. We ended up sitting next to an annoying ass lady. She had to tell every single person how they met and how every year(only 3) they reinvent their first date. Blah blah blah. I was so mad at the hostess by this time since he didn’t give us a window seat, which those tables had more privacy. I felt like I was on a double date with these people! Anyway, on to the food! I ordered a Hawaiian Martini, which was a rip off! I was a bartender for a couple years and my martini was half full! My martini was less than 3oz! My husband ordered a pisco sour which he hated. It was really bitter. I ordered a Roys Mai Tai to make up for my rip off martini and my husband ordered a Mango Mojito, which tasted more than mint. Our bartender muddled way more mint leaves than he should have. The mint overpowered the whole drink. Our waitress let me order from the bar menu because I LOVE cheeseburgers! The combination of the truffle, beef, mushrooms was so delicious! The onion rings that came with it was not at all greasy! Let me fast forward a tad bit. We started with a Lobster Roll and a Ahi Roll! The crunch on the ahi roll was the right amount of crunch. It came with 6 pieces, which was disappointing because it was so delicious! And the lobster roll came with 8 pieces, but they were very small pieces. They both were fresh and had the right amount of rice! My husband ordered the ribeye and the side of Mac and cheese. He enjoyed it even though it looked dry to me. He ordered it medium well and I guess that’s they way he liked it. He complained that there were a lot of those crunchy tendons which he hates! As for dessert, we ordered a pineapple upside down cake. It was delicious. The coconut ice cream complimented the pineapple cake. However when I had a bit of the ice cream, there was something a little hard and crunchy on the bottom. I thought it was a piece of coconut, but it ended up being and large piece of ice! We had a glass of Moscato D’asti which our waitress said came all the way down from Oregon. Roys? Really? I’ll just assume the waitress doesn’t know her wine and assume it comes from Italy! During the whole dinner we kept asking for water. The first time the diners next to us didn’t ask for water, but she brought them out two glasses. Then we asked for it again. Nothing. We even observed all the tables and they indeed had glasses of water at their table. Then we pulled aside a waiter and asked if we can get some water. He asked if we wanted one or two. I know we’re in a drought and everything, but it my husband asked for the water and I’m looking at you very dehydrated and thirsty, just assume it two waters. At the end, our waitress took our picture and did it about 8x because she didn’t know how to work their camera. Then this man dress in a suit went to the table next to us and gave them a card for a credit. Where’s ours? We ordered way more food than our neighbors and acted really nice during dinner. We didn’t show our real emotions. Oh well… On to the next…

I went to Roy’s Restaurant with my family members to celebrate Mother’s Day. They had a brunch special with included a 3 course pre-fixe menu. This was my first time visiting any Roy’s location, and I have seen what they have to offer from an episode of Check Please! Bay Area. With that being said, if you see the pics from my meal, it’s pretty obvious that brunch isn’t their forte. The Prix-Fixe Brunch Menu for $ 35 was a good affordable option for Mother’s Day. The course food options were pretty diverse and depending what you chose, some had pretty generous portions. The first course was Roy’s Brioche Sticky Bun which was by default. For the other two courses I decided on the Ramen and Roy’s Benedict with Filet Mignon. Brioche Sticky Bun – Honey Glaze, Pecan and Macadamia Nuts This was an interesting starter. It was good and very sweet, but I think this could’ve been better served as a dessert course since it kind of screwed up my palate for the rest of the meal. Ramen – Pork Chasu, Scallion, Egg, Nori I was fascinated when I saw this on the menu because I was curious on how ramen would be translated into a fine dining establishment. It was little underwhelming. The broth was okay, the noodles were your basic ramen noodles, the egg was a little overdone for being soft-boiled, and the chasu had way more fat then meat. Granted, my ramen standards are pretty high with Ramen Dojo, Ippudo, and Jinya Ramen, but I probably shouldn’t have expected something to their calibur. Roy’s Benedict with Filet Mignon – Filet Mignon, Cheddar Bacon Biscuit, Shiso Béarnaise The dish was good, but it wasn’t a true Eggs Benedict. I guess I’m used to the sauce being poured on top of the eggs as I didn’t even see the shiso bearnaise. But the filet pieces were cooked pretty well. My mom had their Ribeye & Eggs option and it looked really good. I should’ve ordered that one instead. Aside from the Prix-fixe, they did offer some of their signature dishes as well like the Misoyaki Butterfish. I probably would’ve enjoyed that more then the Roy’s Benedict. Overall, I can only give Roy’s 3 stars just because of the fairly okay brunch. I’ll have to come back again someday for dinner to try their signature dishes in order for me to give a better assessment.

Wirklich sehr köstlich, wer also mal wirklich was Exotisches möchte, ist hier an der richtigen Adresse.
