«Mmmm, Patrick makes yummy soup.» — A review by my five year old, Molly, as she puts away an entire serving of his potato leek soup.

Patrick’s soup is good for your soul and good for your body as well. I met him several months back as he lived on my street and passed our house regularly. We chatted a bunch of times and he is a super person. And YES he does hand out soup to homeless people like our nieghborhood friend, Ray, who hangs out in front of Lost Weekend video.(BTW, Ray is also a great guy, just say hi and chat with him and you will find out) But on to the soup. All are prepared fresh and served to order. As an avowed carnivore I was very surprised to learn that almost almost all the recipes are vegan but the flavor profiles are amazing! My kids at 12 years old and older are allowed to roam a block or two from our house and they quickly made friends with Patrick and raved about his soups. These are kids who have a hard time with vegetables but always try his soups. As to the safety/legal issues, the other poster has a vendetta against Patrick as Patrick’s sales methods threaten the other poster’s comfort zones and possibly his/her business. I will eat Mr. Bostwick’s soup anyday!

I like the vibe Patrick gives to my corner and hey I like the soup too. He looks like he’s having a lot of fun. There’s nothing like soup on a cold SF evening to make you happy and warm… The truffles sound divine!

Sorry that this street vendor CLOSED. I was glad to see a new street soup vendor, after both the Sexy Soup Cart and The Soup Slut(yes, that was the food stand name) called it quits. I was hoping that chef Patrick would find a new spot, or partner with an established business like many other vendors that do pop-ups. That didn’t happen. Sadly, no more soup for us.

he calls himself an asshole and my interaction with him today confirmed this. see here for yourself: plus, dude, what you are doing is illegal. why you gotta act like you’re better than me? (and really, you give food to every homeless person that walks by?)

What a pleasant surprise, Madhatter Chowder! The potatoes could have been cooked a little more and the soup was not hot enough, but it was very-very– tasty and spicey. The best Manhattan Chowder I’ve ever had. I’m going back for more of what ever the Soup to Nuts guy is serving.

Only in San Francisco! I thought the soup was great. I spoke to the chef/owner and he told me that he worked in San Diego, at the Pamplemousse Grill(a great upscale restaurant). He will probably be famous one day…

Had the tomato orange and fennel soup. It was delicious and the orange was a great touch. Will definitely go back!

I’ve walked by this stand almost every day after work for the past few weeks, but I only today decided to stop and try the soup. Today was creamed broccoli. It was delicious and filling. $ 5 for a cup of soup and some bread, or $ 8 if you want some of his homemade truffles along with it. I’m not too big on soup, but I’ll definitely be stopping by again in the future. Oh, and this past week it seems he moved from the corner up valencia into the entrance of one of the closed businesses. Don’t worry, he left signs. You won’t miss it.

Stopped by here while walking our dog. AWESOME soup! A good deal at $ 5 with bread. Hearty portion, too. When we got home and split our soup the flavor was excellent. Loved it and will be back.

We met Patrick last night on our way to dinner at Udupi Palace across the street. He is charming and cheerful and knows just how to hawk a fine-smelling & –sounding soup on a surprisingly cold, breezy night. Once I sampled the Tomato Orange Fennel Soup with its light, delicious taste and tinge of sunshiny citrus I knew I had to have some. We packed a pint to take home and added a bag of Chili Butterscotch Almond truffles for dessert. Both were absolutely delicious! Although we skipped it, he does offer bread with the soup –a good deal at $ 5. Love supporting local food entrepreneurs and their passion for daily creativity!

I walked by this soup stands a couple times as I ran errands last night, and when Patrick was still outside at 8:30pm(and it was really cold and windy), I had to stop and try the soup. I don’t know what I was expecting — just soup, I guess — but when I tried a little spoonful I was blown away. The flavors were just amazing. So, still not really sure what was up with the tiny table holding a big urn over a bunsen burner, I asked«Is this for sale?» I wasn’t sure if this was product promotion for a boxed soup line or what. And of course, it was for sale, it’s a tiny little soup stand! So I got a bowl of soup to go – with toasted bread — and headed home. Definitely recommend following the twitter feed for soup updates:

Love those balmy evenings in the Mission… strolling Valencia… browsing Borderlands Books… considering dinner and then there you are; looking at a small table and an intriguing tall crock over a burner with a smiling guy in a crisp white chefs jacket. Hummmm… A small paper sign announces the menu for the evening, potato leek soup and truffles. Somehow that sounds better than the burgers I had planned. We pause, and the chef lifts the lid of the crock… and aromatic steam wafts out and tickles my nose. Oh yes… He offers up that the truffles are Meyer’s rum and cinnamon. Oh double yes! ‘Would you like a taste?‘ A nice offer, but the aroma is all the selling point I need. ‘No, thanks, three soups and two truffles, please?‘ The startled response is sweet and funny. ‘That will be $ 25, are you sure?‘ I look at the husband and daughter standing by me and smile and nod ‘yes, I’m sure.‘ He grins and says ‘oh, ok, I just wanted to make sure!‘ I couldn’t help laughing and offering up ‘Gee that’s an unusual marketing ploy’ at which point he introduced himself as Patrick and began, as he served up creamy soup into spacious containers, to chat us up. He’s been working at this soup to nuts thing for about 3 months off and on now, more on recently when the weather has been clear. He’s excited by the experience and is planning, as a thank you to his regular customers, on doing a special Lobster Mac and Cheese sometime in the not too distant future. Patrick slices french bread to accompany the luscious potage. he offers spoons in case we plan to eat and stroll, but we pass as we are on the way home. He writes his contact info«Soup to Nuts» on the lid of one of the cardboard soup tops, pulls out two small bags of truffles, each with four little round rich balls of goodness, and wishes us a good evening as we stash our goodies and stroll off towards home. At home we are not disappointed. The Potato Leek soup is rich, hot and creamy with an abundance of flavour and good mouth feel. The daughter and I find it a tiny bit peppery but I have to confess that she and I are really wimps. And it didn’t slow either of us from sopping up the last drips in our containers with the bread. The truffles are smooth and soft and have nice flavour, no harsh boozy taste at all, just meltingly rich chocolate and rum with a kick of cinnamon. 5:00 pm at Valencia and 21st? Oh yes! I so have to have that mac and cheese…

Several nights each week(you can find out which by checking his twitter feed at ), this guy Patrick is out on the corner of 21st and Valencia wearing a chef’s suit and selling homemade soup and truffles. This is really good soup. These are really good truffles. Last night he had a good vegan chili going on, and his truffles were this butterscotch almond cinnamon red pepper thing that were just really fucking good. I mean to say that this guy makes really great truffles. He is good at this. Patrick’s a really animated guy, and it’s really fun to see him do his food stand thing — he loves telling folks about the story that got him here(he’s apparently a really good chef, was courted by french laundry, worked with wolfgang puck or something I don’t know I don’t watch food network), and most importantly, he makes really good food. Worth stopping by if you’re in need of tasty soup and/or tasty dessert and are walking around 21st and Valencia on a weeknight.
