I was in search of a quick bang trim. I called over and they were able to take me half an hour later. The bang trim was good and inexpensive and the stylist was friendly. I’ll definitely be back.

She blamed my hair! I went for the«Deva» cut, but there was *nothing* Deva about the cut. Sylvia did what most people who cut curly hair do – she twisted my hair into sections she wanted, misted it, and cut it. My hair was totally lop-sided(a good 11’2″ longer on one side), and was not layered at all, as we had explicitly discussed. Sylvia offered to recut my hair, and seemed genuinely concerned I was unhappy, but after she blamed the bad cut on the fact that I don’t have corkscrew curls(huh?), I was not inclined to go back to her for more of anything. Sylvia seems like a very, very nice woman, but claiming she does Deva cuts is just plain false advertising. During my cut she was taking calls from prospective clients, and she told them the same thing she told me – she’s so much cheaper because she asks you to come with freshly washed hair. She then proceeded to slam a certain other Deva salon in the Lower Haight that starts with an «M» and ends with an «n,» claiming they are no better trained than she is. I agree that other salon is pricey, but at least I didn’t have to have my hair cut for a year after the first time. With this place, I had to have it cut again after 2 hours!

The owner and staff are friendly, accommodating and up-to-date. A full service salon worth your business. Sylvia so kindly helped me with my toddler grandson’s hair without an appointment — drop-in. Finally his hair is out of his eyes. I have had a manicure and facial there too, and really liked the service. The owner, a native San Franciscan, is so laid-backed and friendly she makes her business feel like«home.»

Eileen is great. She fit me in for a last minute hair cut. She understood what I wanted, even though I wasn’t clear myself. Great shampoo, easy free parking, and very good prices! At the end of Cortland.

Bad bad blow dry — came out like a big frizzy mess from the 80s. Seriously? Charge $ 45 and you can’t even do a blow dry?

My stylist is Sylvia and she is amazing! She does wonders with my curly hair! Finding someone who can both cut AND style curly hair is difficult and I am the luckiest person to have found her. I live in the East Bay and have been going to her for 6 years now and she is accomodating, takes extra time, and is very honest and informative with me! You will not be disappointed with Sylvia…

I suggest Sylvia. She listens to your suggestions and enjoys cutting alternative styles.

The other day, I listened to my co-workers discuss the new movie, «Obsession», and like many such discussions other titles were thrown out as better or similar or whatever. «Fatal Attraction» and«Play Misty For Me» were brought up, for example. I call these variations on the same theme the«When You Play You Pay» stories. One needn’t be in a romantic or some torrid relationship to experience the consequences of «stepping out» though. My relationship with Sylvia, my hairdresser, is a perfect example. I discovered Sylvia months and months ago by walking into The Cutting Edge in Bernal Heights one day. At that time my butt length Asian ramrod straight hair was in sore need of some TLC. Previous experiences w/egomaniacal hairdressers in my past had sworn me away from salons for years, and as a result I was desperate. Luckily, for me, Sylvia had the time for a walk-in. She assured me she knew how to handle Asian hair. She promised only to cut the amount I requested. She listened when I requested no blowdry or product as I needed the end result to reflect the effort I put into my daily hairstyling(uhm, essentially none). For 45 dollars, I walked away with healthier, cleanly trimmed, damp hair and could not have been happier. After numerous return appointments, I decided to chop off all my hair and donate the locks. I entrusted this huge change to the hands of a trendy, «young» salon w/multiple raves on Unilocal. Now, I“m not«mature», have tattoos, dye my hair blue– am no stranger to the exhibitionistic«cool» symbols put forth to attract like minded individuals. I suppose I believed my «boring» hair would turn out better in the hands of someone symbolically and on the surface representing«cool». Someone 10 years younger than me, with tattoos, pierced body parts, crazy doo and wearing an innovative clothing style. Like I said, when you play you pay. This woman charged nearly twice Sylvia, clearly hadn’t the understanding of Asian hair she claimed to have, and ignored my styling explanation. I was left w/a lopsided hair cut(baby bangs cut on one side of my head only), hair that would only lie down with the application of a gob of product, and a style that I ran into numerous times as i hurried away as quickly as I could in the opposite direction from that salon. One day later, distraught and feeling guilty, I walked into The Cutting Edge where Sylvia gasped in shock. I begged for forgiveness and a quickie. She complied and penciled me in for a regular appointment 2 days later. In the 20 minute emergency walk in, Sylvia managed, with nearly zero direction, to fix the infidelity on my head. She later cut it exactly in the style i thought the«younger woman» would do. Sylvia is by far one of the coolest hairdressers I’ve ever met. I have not and will never cheat on Sylvia again.

Eileen’s been coloring & cutting my hair for 15+ years, and I continue to get compliments. I love the comfy, neighborhood feeling of Cutting Edge and I’ve also had good haircuts & color from Katherine and Sylvia. Prices are reasonable, and there’s no «attitude», just genuine warmth coupled with expertise. Whenever I want to treat myself, I get a pedicure from Beverly; it costs a bit more than the assembly-line nail place up the street, and it’s well worth it.

Beverly gives the best manicure in the city. She takes 1 hour for a manicure and 1 hour for a pedicure but it is worth it. The salon is plain, nothing fancy or trendy, kinda old lady looking but just this Saturday someone commented on how great my manicure looked and I got it 9 days ago!!! Beverly also does accupresure if you need it. If you like a really clean mani pedi that will last then go here. Parking is pretty easy– you do need to make an appointment tho.
