I can’t complain, for a fast food restaurant, this hit the spot. I had a delicious Steak Lover which was perfect in warmth and adequately seasoned. Maybe they could have chilled out a little bit on the salt. I was hungry still so I ordered a second sandwich, the MacDaddy. This sandwich totally delivered. Perfectly warm and gooey this sandwich was very filling. All the utensils and plates etc. are either compostable or recyclable so I definitely felt good about my green footprint. Music was a little loud, but my food was served promptly. Definitely recommend! Yum!

Food was yummy greasy and you’ll be happy. What I liked the most was the cool queue display they have going on. Update: wtf%%^%hdhdh! They closed. Must have been my review?

My husband and I were killing some time before an event at Unilocal HQ. We wanted a little something to eat, and the Melt was convenient and seemed quick enough. Plus, who doesn’t like a grilled cheese? We split the classic grilled cheese with added charred jalapenos. It was pretty good — bread was fluffy, there outside was crispy, and there was cheese. But, I wish there was more cheese, and I wish there was more butter on the outside of the bread. Thankfully, there were enough jalapenos to deliver some flavor to the sandwich. Overall, it was a quick snack that was pretty tasty. I would never go out of my way to go to the Melt, but if I was in the neighborhood and wanted something fast and cheap, I might stop by again.

Mediocre burger, your typical chain burger store. I thought I would have a juicy burger dripping down my throat but it turned out to be so dry and not sure why. The service is OK — extremely limited on drink selection, so when you have absolutely no other choices, perhaps you can settle for this. However, who would want to settle? –cheers!

Italian Job Grilled Cheese: 4.5 stars Yum! I’m not a big grilled cheese person, but maybe it’s because American cheese is usually disgusting. The Melt adds tonnes of herbs and spices to their«Italian Job» and uses fancy Fontina and Provolone cheeses, along with the mushrooms. I don’t think I would ever get the«Classic» over this. Tomato Basil Soup: 3.5 stars It’s too salty and too sweet like most Western tomato soups, but goes really well with the grilled cheese. Also, $ 3 for a cup of soup(coup?) is reasonably priced. I’d definitely come back for a quick, affordable meal when I’m in the neighbourhood.

The meat is not really tasty and the fries are too salty. I would say that Super Duper is twice better for the same price.

Very poor. I got the cheesesteak melt, which appears to be ground beef, onions, and very little cheese SAUCE. It was grilled on one side and still white on the other. There was literally about a half inch around the outside of the melt with nothing on it. I left more than ¾ of the melt and went somewhere else to eat. Not even worth eating

It is what it is. A grilled cheese chain in the fidi. I came in on a particularly cold day to get my sandwich and soup fix togo, but my soup was lukewarm when I got it :/Makes me miss the American Grilled Cheese kitchen in SOMA.

Oh the good olé’ American favorite — the grilled cheese sandwich! If you are looking for a specially made grilled cheese, you have come to the right place! During my last few visits to San Francisco, I have made it a priority to eat at The Melt. This is the mecca of grilled cheese sandwiches. You can get your any which way you want it and they will make it for you! If you come here during the lunch rush, you will surely wait a hot second to get your food. I almost always get a grilled cheese with bacon and tomatoes. The sandwich is not entirely too large, but definitely satisfies that craving, which might make you yearning for more. Yes, that buttered bread and ultra cheesy middle that has cheese oozing out every bite can get addicting! There are plenty of places to eat in very close proximity of this place, yet during lunch, it never fails how super dee-duper busy this place gets. It is popular because people love grilled cheese sandwiches and love the spin they put on theirs. When I think grilled cheese in San Francisco, I automatically think of The Melt and so should you! This last visit, I enjoyed the Mad Daddy that had macaroni & cheese in the middle and the Italian Job — loved the spicy garlic bread! Don’t worry, not feelin’ the grilled cheese? Go with a burger, a salad or a soup; they have all that on their menu to please what other palates are craving!

This Melt is right around the corner from my school which is dangerous! The store is always clean and the staff is friendly. Yesterday I had a salad there which I hadn’t had before and it was wonderful! The Melt is always a treat and I’m happy to have this one nearby for when the craving strikes.

MOUTHWATERING just thinking about The Melt. It is exactly what you would expect… cheese on cheese on cheese. mac and cheese. grilled cheese. cheeseburgers. all the deliciousness you could imagine. I went here for the first time this past week and thank god i did because it was perfection. I ordered the classic grilled cheese and added tomato then obviously got a side of the classic mac and cheese. This may be a bit dangerous considering this place is directly across from where I work. oh well, there are worse things in life. Only reason I’m giving it a 4 is because my friend and I decided we were already going all out so why not just keep it up and each get our own chocolate chip cookie. So we did. We entered our order in the computer right when you walk in the door and for some reason it took way longer than it should have to get two already made cookies that were sitting on the counter right in front of us. We had to go up to the cashier and ask for our cookies. No biggie though, we were perfectly content once we got them and this will definitely NOT stop me from going back very soon and trying a cheeseburger and fries(which look incredible as well!)

Why 3 stars? Because there’s a lack of variety. — — —- My experience at the Melt wasn’t a bad one, but I was pretty underwhelmed with only 4 types grilled cheese on the menu, and none with any meat. Maybe the name of the restaurant is a bit misleading, but I expected it to be the Costco of grilled cheese sandwiches. So instead, I opted for the truffle grilled cheese and the sweet corn tortilla soup. It was fine. Pleasant, even. But my expectations were just a bit skewed. I feel like a gourmet grilled cheese restaurant would be a relatively easy and profitable operation, but no matter where I am in the country, I’ve yet to find one that I love. Maybe it’s not that easy?

Still expanding. Not quite in San Francisco locations. Few have closed including the scene of my first review: But quite so in menu. Recently revamped menu now includes burgers: These burgers include creations like a huge piece of grilled chicken overflowing between two halves of a potato bun, bit of grilled onions, tomato and BBQ sauce. Pickle spear on top. Already a good deal for less than $ 7. More so when bacon and cheese come standard. None of which would matter if it wasn’t delicious. And it absolutely was. Friendly staff, clever branding(both voice and design) and useful incorporation of technology(such as a digital board showing when your order is ready) too. Expansion includes another star.

What cures stress better than the ultimate comfort meal of grilled cheese and tomato soup? Nothing – the answer is nothing. And The Melt has a few things going for it: 1) It’s hella-close to the ol’ office when I’m in town. Like, throw-a-rock-and-hit-it close. 2) It serves melted cheese betwixt buttered, griddled bread(and booze!) 3) They have add-ons like roasted jalapeños and tomato slices 4) It’s cheap and hits the spot But then, The Melt has quite a bit against it. Especially when you have to please a midwestern gal coming from the home of Melt(not THE Melt): the original crafter of the mother of all epic and overly indulgent, smack yo’ momma-good grilled cheese sammies in Cleveland. Not that CLE doesn’t have an amazing dining scene(it does x1,000), but when I come to SF, I want to be blown the hell away by whatever I eat. And well, The Melt didn’t blow me away. In fact, I’ve made better grilled cheese sandwiches at home. And I’ve had life-changing grilled cheese sammies at Melt in Cleveland for cheaper. Also, I know SF is all about great food, but who decided American cheese wasn’t good? I love cheese options for my grilled cheese and what I love even more is American cheese. I feel like NOONE in SF has American cheese. Sad times. Like a few others have mentioned, I also thought the tomato soup was a little too bisque-like and was missing a little something. Too thick for it’s acidity? If they’re going for a thick bisque, there’s got to be some creaminess to cut the acidity. Anywho, if you’re having a mad craving for an A-OK grilled cheese that’s close and cheap(by SF standards) The Melt has you covered. Otherwise, I’d just save my craving and make it at home.

It’s really worth to try it with this price. I love their hamburgers and my friend loves Cheesesteak Melt! I want to go there next time!

I just started working across the street a month ago and this is my absolute favorite place for dinner so far(but I haven’t ventured out past New Montgomery yet). I’ve ALWAYS been looking for a MAC-AND-CHEESESANDWICH!!! I finally found you!!! It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting but I found other things on the menu that keeps me coming back: The S’more!!! This is my favoritest thing in the whole entire world right now — it puts a smile on my face. It’s a sandwich with chocolate and marshmallow all melted inside. Every time, I stand in front of the menu to «decide» what I want to eat but I always come back to The S’more. The second best thing I love is the Well Dressed fries. Bacon, cheese, onions on shoestring fries… good golly. It’s like heaven in every bite. Amazing. You have your meat, dairy, veggies, starch — pretty much all the most important food groups ;) I mean I don’t want to hype it up too much so ya know… it’s good ;) Oooooh! And I love that there’s a tablet you can order on if you’re using card payment. Then you can scooch on over to a table and wait for them to call your initials and get your food. One thing though — it’s really much better if you eat at the restaurant. Or at least the food I get doesn’t really travel well.

The Melt has unfortunately melted off my list of favorite lunch spots. An affordable place that specializes in grilled cheese, I didn’t think they could go wrong. Alas, I must be a little spoiled when it comes to cheese as the many delicious sounding options weren’t too impressive. Not terrible for the price, but not a meal that left me wanting more. Grilled cheese, cheese burgers, and mac & cheese dominate the menu with a few soups and salads to balance it out. I ordered the T-Mac mac & cheese with three different types of cheeses and mushrooms. It wasn’t expensive(around $ 6), but too small for a lunch portion and not particularly satisfying either. Luckily I ordered more, but wasn’t particularly enthused with the tomato basil soup. The texture was rather thick, almost like a sauce than a soup. I also tried some of my friend’s grilled cheese melt and while the cheese was good, the bread was a little soggy and not a stand out sandwich. Points for price in an expensive neighborhood for lunch, but taste was just okay.

I was starving and craving a sandwich. Looking through my bookmarks, I stumbled upon The Melt. An ooey gooey cheesy sandwich sounded perfect! I went on their site and placed an order for pick up. September 2013 Take out: *Italian job with jalapeño, chips & pickle($ 4.95) *Two tomato basil with grilled cheese croutons($ 3.95 cup) I decided to get both a soup and a sandwich. By doing that you basically save $ 1.95. By the time I got it back to the office, the sandwich was lukewarm, so I suggest eating it at the restaurant. It didn’t have the comforting meltiness I wanted. But the flavors were good. The tomato soup was okay. I wanted something richer as the soup was kind of light. I think my meal would have been more satisfying if I ate it there, but for take out, everything was A-OK.

I must admit my skepticism when The Melt first opened in SF a few years ago. People in this city are so lazy that they can’t make a grilled cheese and soup at home? What’s next, giant sushi handrolls in the form of a burrito? Oh wait, that really is a thing! Fast forward a few years later and I’ll be the first to tell you that I like The Melt. It’s an affordable(and generally fast) option. Perfect on a cold, rainy day. Sure they have burgers now but I go straight for the grilled cheese with bacon and a cup of that tomato basil soup. For $ 9, that’s not a bad lunch deal. Sad, but true.

The Melt reminds of two things from my childhood: 1. Mmm… Grilled Cheese and Soup. When you’re a young’n, is there anything better than a good, buttery Grilled Cheese and a bowl of Tomato Soup? There’s nothing scary. It’s hard to make it anything other than good. Who doesn’t love dunking the Grilled Cheese in the soup? 2. There was a time in my life when I would not believe that I’d spend $ 10.50(post-tax) for a Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. That time was sometime before I moved to SF and started working downtown. My Saturday routine once a month brings me downtown for the day(normally I’m down by City Hall) — and I take a quick lunch, which means either Subway(no), Uno Dos Tacos(which is alright … sorta), Ayola(which puts me in food coma), Bun Mee(which I can’t justify due to my Saigon Sandwich bias) or a few other middling options that I have tried. Not to be too Charlie Brown-like, but why can’t Café Madeline, Sushirrito and The Sentinal be open on Saturday? It a pretty simple formula, really. Two levels of Grilled Cheese at $ 5 and $ 7, respectively. Level one is primarily cheese. There are a few different options, depending upon the flavor you prefer — which is good to match with the soup. Level two involved additional meat or veggie fillings, such as Chicken and Spinach, Braised Short Rib or Mushrooms. The sandwiches are tasty enough. They do a good job of crisping the bread just right with generous butter and seasoning. That said, they are not huge for the price. They also have soups(+$ 2 to make a combo) — and a few options here. The Two Tomato Basil is a pretty standard offering — and it is rich and thick. I’ll be real… Would I seek this place out? No. It’s convenience. Would I come here if I were pinching my pennies? Nope. It’s not really a value proposition to have a Grilled Cheese and Soup for $ 10.50. But, as is so often the case, you pay for rent and location. It’s not bad, and honestly the inner-child in me still loves a Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. One last point — It may just be the one young woman I deal with on Saturdays, but she seems to really like her work and is extremely friendly and pleasant. I’ve thought the service was very good. I was in-between giving this a 3-Star for the price, but service knocked it up to 4-Star. It seems like they try their best to do a good job. That’s a good quality.
