Yvonne Cheng, MD

I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for 29 years and recently gave birth at CPMC to my 3^rd child. Out of anybody I have ever seen for my diabetes care in pregnancy, Dr. Yvonne Cheng has hands down given my the BEST diabetes care. My first two pregnancies I delivered at UCSF and Dr. Cheng was my care provider there. I saw other residents and fellows at UCSF, but Dr. Cheng was always the most compassionate, knowledgeable and caring compared to any of the other physicians. She really has a passion for diabetes too. I never felt like she would make arbitrary changes to my sugars, but she would really analyze my logs and blood sugars and make minor or aggressive changes when necessary. I am a passionate person who really cared how my sugars were in pregnancy, not only for myself, but for my unborn child as well and she really understood that and supported me in giving me the best diabetes care possible. She made herself available and accessible to me as much as possible and I never felt like I didn’t have a shoulder to lean on when I needed it with my diabetes care.
Dr. Cheng’s care for me was so impeccable that I chose to follow her from UCSF to CPMC when she left this year during my 3^rd Trimester. I left a place where I knew my doctors and the process to go to a completely new environment, new OB, new nurses, etc just to keep the best diabetes care for myself which was provided by Dr. Cheng. Even after starting over with my care team, it was the best decision Ever for me to follow Dr. Cheng. She kept me in great control with my sugars in the 3^rd trimester (the most difficult trimester with Type 1 Diabetes) and I delivered a beautiful, healthy baby boy a week and a half ago.
I would recommend Dr. Cheng to anyone who needs expert diabetes care in pregnancy. Her new team is also great that she is working with. If I choose to have another baby, I would definitely choose the Diabetes Clinic with Dr. Cheng at CPMC again instead of going back to UCSF. I want to be where someone cares about me and my diabetes and that is exactly what Dr. Yvonne Cheng has provided. Thank you!!!

My husband and I can not say enough good things about Dr. Cheng. This pregnancy has been very hard and stressful at times, but thanks to her compassion, kindness, but most importantly intelligence things have felt a lot more manageable.
We are currently expecting twins, and we’ve had some of the typical twin problems which have put us at high risk for preterm labor. At times I’ve had very high anxiety but when I reach that point, she LISTENS to my concerns and doesn’t downplay my fears. She sets out a well thought plan of action and reasonable goals, which puts my mind at ease. Like I said before not only does she have amazing bedside manner, but she’s one of the smartest doctors I’ve ever met! As I’m sure you know this is a very rare combination for a doctor to have. A great example of this was when I had an ultrasound which didn’t look so great. She happened to be in the room as the ultrasound was taking place. I was feeling very unsettled about it and what it could mean. At the time she took quite a while to explain her thoughts on it and to hear mine. I felt better after we spoke but still a little unsure. There were several other patients who had been waiting for her so I knew she had to go and we could talk about it the next day when I would see her. She’s so good that she recognized very easily how I felt and made a special trip to come to my hospital room later that night to check in on me and continue the conversation. Like always she listened to my concerns and then explained to me her knowledge on the issue. After we talked I realized things weren’t as bad as they seemed. Had she not come down to talk to me I would have been more worried than I needed to be.
Luckily I’m still pregnant (I’m a lot further along than I ever thought I would be), most likely thanks to her and several other great docs within the high risk group Dr. Cheng is apart of. She’s honesty amazing and we’re so grateful she’s our doctor. She’s a gem!!!
