I snuck in here for a lil lotto action since it was very conveniently located. It’s in the PetCo/Trader Joes parking lot behind the Shell station at Huntington and Rosemead. It was also next to a ski/snowboard shop. So… it was very fun to pop in here and check out the stuff around it. It does seem like your basic liquor store with all of the goods that you would expect desire and want to come across: Snacks, Alcohol, Beer, Gum, Lotto, Mints, Swag(hats and other stuff), etc. I also noticed that they have some mixers in the store to give you a one stop shopping experience on your way to whatever soirée you are headed to. Hey it is 5 o’clock somewhere, so don’t judge me! Anyways all I got was a few lotto duckets as I don’t drink with the munchkin. She doesn’t like the taste of alcohol anyways and this place appeared to be a bit more expensive than Costco or the clearance racks at the super market. Consequently I didn’t purchase anything else. They do seem to have you covered if you need a quick in n out urge for some adult beverages and snacks…

This is a pretty average little liquor store, but it is kind of special to me for two reasons. First, my dad went to school with the original owner’s daughter(Crystal Flick) in 1954. Second, these small businesses that were established in the Forties and Fifties — and still look like they belong to that era — simply do not exist in Canada. I am from Vancouver but was recently down in Pasadena and San Gabriel visiting family and one of the coolest things about these primarily residential neighbourhoods is the old businesses. In Vancouver, our oldest buildings and businesses are from the 1950s, but we are constantly refurbishing and demolishing these establishments. I like Flick’s(and frequent it when I am down south) for the very fact that it appears exactly as it did when my Draft Dodger Dad knew it in the 1950s.

No air conditioning in here, torture during the summer. Also, the owners are smelly and they never smile at you as they take your money. I come here only because it is convenient on my way home.
