really good food. I would recommend it anyday. It is as they say — next best thing to home food.

I have ordered desi meals thrice until now. While I appreciate the convenience of getting Indian food delivered to my door, I am not a huge fan like the other reviewers and here is why:
1) Taste — The food is very average in terms of taste. I am definitely glad that it is not greasy like in Indian restaurants but it is quite bland and some of the curries are very watery. They probably add all the water to increase the volume because they sell in 8 oz, 16 oz, 24 oz containers. Each time I had to cook the gravy curries to thicken them.
Their rotis are pretty good though! They taste like homemade ones and are so much better than the ones you get in Indian stores.
2) Price — I think $ 7 for an 8 oz serving is on the expensive side given that they aren’t really exotic dishes. The price does not linearly increase, so works out better if you order more of the same dish but all in all not a great deal.
3) Delivery — Delivery was within the window promised. So I had no issues there.
I might order again from desi meals in distant future but only because there is no one else that delivers Indian food in Emeryville. South Bay on the other hand has a lot of options and I would suggest people living there to try those.

I ordered food from here yesterday and really liked the food. It is clean, has minimal oil and the Rotis tasted like authentic wheat Roti’s [unlike the Roti’s that I usually buy from Indian stores which also has white flour/​maida in them].
Will order again :-)

Here is what I did–
1. Ordered food on Sunday
2. Received Monday around 8pm and stored in freezer
3. Tuesday opened 1 box waiting for vegetable to pop out and micro for 4mins. Roti for 2 mins in micro.
4. DONE!!!
5. Eat, sleep, work next day then repeat 3 – 4 until next order

Desi Meals has been an invaluable time saver for two working parents of a newborn. The food is fresh, healthy and best of all, Ashok is extremely accommodating and responsive by email. We’ve ordered five times already and each time the food has arrived in a timely manner. The one time it was late (8p instead of our usual delivery time around 7p), we received a call beforehand to let us know. There are six different dishes with each weekly order. For the size we get, it provides about 10 meals for $ 65/67.5 depending on if you pay by cash/​credit. It’s not a bargain, but if you factor in time, variety and the convenience of just going to your front door to grab a bag full of ready to eat food that’s not loaded with salt and preservatives, for us it’s worth it. We have had some problems with substitutions in the past (e.g. substituting the wrong item, forgetting to include an item) but Ashok was able to respond right away and is working on addressing the issue. Overall, delicious food and great customer service!

I am surprised to read the other 2 reviews especially the one where they are complaining about food not being fresh if cooked a day before. People seem to be living in ancient times and a third-​world place. This is 21^st century and you are living in USA, and there is an invention called refrigerator which keeps your food fresh and nutritious for days. This obsession with always cooking the meals right before one eats, it’s beyond my comprehension.
I live in San Francisco recently started using their services, it’s the 4^th time I have ordered food from them and am totally a fan. Food is enough and lasts me 3 – 4 days. Each dish has a unique taste, very little oil used in preparation, and I have no qualms about delivery times. I always get my delivery within the promised time 7:30 and 9:30. Food is tasty and reminds me of home-​cooked food in India, very authentic, nothing like the greasy food one normally gets in the other Indian-​restaurants. I don’t always like everything on the menu but there is enough variety and then there is the option to double the dish you like, and exclude the one you don’t. I have not tried that yet but I intend to. The only other place where I had relished grease-​free food was «Little Nepal» in Bernal Heights.

CAUTION IF USING THIS SERVICE!!! THEY HAVE FLAKY DELIVERY TIMES AND ARGUE WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS.
We were given a delivery time of 7:30 to 8:30 directly by Desi Meals and didn’t deliver our food until 10pm! When we called, and they finally answered the phone, they insisted we were wrong and refused to give us our food any earlier than 10pm, and they refused to give any discount. They said ‘I have to stop at my home first’ before delivering the food we were promised. We eventually argued to get this meal for free, which is why this isn’t a one-​star review, but we won’t be ordering again. It’s not worth the uncertainty.
