It was with a very heavy heart that we chose to leave EDCDC after over a year and a half there. Rather than turn this into a nit-picky list of things I didn’t like and was uncomfortable with, I’ll simply say my general concerns lied in the areas of quality of care for my child, lack of transparency with regard to parent communication, high teacher turnover rate, and clashing philosophies on early childhood education. There were a couple of teachers we had grown close to, but my overall feeling is they are all overwhelmed and under supported there, and even under trained. The observation made by a reviewer below about the playground is not inaccurate. Many families that started with us when the center opened have since left as well.

My kid does not go to this school so I cannot tell anything about the curriculum. I watched interaction on the playground between teachers and children to form opinion and rating about this school. I was watching teachers interact with the children outside for good 30 minutes. Ratio of teachers to students during outside play is very low. Play was merely unsupervised, there were no interaction or communication between teachers and children. One of the older teachers was very physical pulling the boy out of the sand because he didn’t stand up fast enough and went inside to meet his mother who came to pick him up. The same teacher didn’t notice repetitive behavior of particular boy who was throwing sand on purpose into other boys face and pulling hair of another boy. When it was cleaning time teachers were raising voices and scolding the kids who didn’t get out of the sandbox fast enough to line up to go inside. Teachers did not smile once or connected to the kids in any way. Children were not treated with respect. Teachers did not build positive discipline and model children’s behavior at the playground. Interaction and communication on the playground between teachers and students were minimal and usually in negative way. I cannot imagine how teachers set up positive learning environment for the kids inside the classrooms. Make sure you get to know the teachers who will be spending time with your kids all day. Since you are playing a lot of money for your child to attend preschool you don’t want to choose a school where teachers pull and push students around. I would not recommend this school to anyone !

This school is the BEST kept secret in San Jose! Although the campus is brand new, everyone in charge has tons of experience running the school’s first campus down the street. Both of our children have absolutely thrived with the Early Discoveries family(we’ve been part of the school for four years). The infant room at the new campus is just amazing. It’s huge with tons of things to explore and lots of room, and everything is new and fresh. There are currently only about four babies and two teachers. Although obviously this will change as the school grows, it’s amazing to know that your baby is getting such one on one attention. They do finger painting, blow bubbles outside, play on the special playground just for infants and toddlers, etc… The teachers send parents a detailed email each day with pictures of the little ones and all their fun so you get to feel connected to your child. The owners and everyone in charge couldn’t possibly be more loving or welcoming, and Early Discoveries is full of events like Mother’s Day Tea, an Easter Egg Hunt, etc… These really help you build a sense of community with the other parents. I really encourage you to check it out! It receives my highest possible recommendation!
