Came in for a quick lunch and they definitely delivered. Super fast and everything tasted great. Had the bento box with tempura and tuna roll. I will definitely be back.

I don’t know why I gave a 3 stars only for so long to this place. So here is my update: I do come here quite often after having been disappointed big time by Chacha sushi(I usually try not to compare restaurants in my reviews but those 2 places are pretty similar). Their food is consistent and offer a very good value for money especially in this area(Cambrian Park). Their rolls have nothing to envy to other californian sushi restaurants in south SJ(I’d even say that some of their rolls are more creative and better presented). Fishes are very fresh. BBQ plates are delicious. Their Udon noodles are always perfectly cooked, never soggy, their broth is always clear, not salty, no MSG but very tasty and flavorful. The staff(Korean) is very nice and efficient. They might«sound» odd but talk to them slowly and they’ll pretty much accommodate any of my(sometime weird) requests. Oh and …1 $ small bottles of hot sake?!? who can beat that?

Sushi is, meh– ok. Service was odd. I came in for a quick lunch by myself and the waitress kept putting the food on the opposite side of the table.

I decided to give this place a second try. It’s always packed so maybe the first time my experience was just an off night. They got my order wrong again! They didn’t seem to have enough staff either time. They have a large selection of rolls and kind of pricey. It’s very frustrating to have them make the wrong items for me on both visits. I won’t be going back.

Recently moved into the neighborhood and discovered the place by chance. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised. The food is great and the staff is very friendly. They offer a great menu selection and you can ask for special prepared items. It is a bit pricey, but the quality and portions help justify the cost. One thing they can do is to offer fountain drinks instead of canned sodas and reduce the price and offer free refills. I would love for them to open up earlier too. With all this in mind I highly recommend this place.

Horrible service. If you have children, don’t bother. They will ignore you and treat you very rudely if you«bother» them. We ended up leaving after being treated like lepers for 15 – 20 mins. I will never go back there. They chose to leave a table dirty rather than seat us.

If you haven’t been here since ownership changed, you should try it out. Owner John, Sushi Chef serves the freshest hamachi sushi I have tasted in ages… their proportions are beyond the standard overrated sushi restaurants. Andy, also a sushi wiz is also awesome. The staff, including Michelle is there whenever you need her, but not too much. The atmosphere is a perfect mix of Japenese and contemporary. After being a Mizu Sushi fan, which is great, I have become a #1 fan of Ishi Shima!

I’ve been here before and now I remember why I never came back. The sushi was below my standards. Very small portions and the rice was extremely tough and hard. The fish was fresh which was nice. I ordered the camden roll. The ladies were extremely pushy. I arrived 15 mins before closing which may be why. I barely sat down before she asked me what I wanted. I didn’t even have a chance to look at menu. Order came out quickly. They brought me my bill mid roll and then returned 3 mins later to ask if I was ready to pay. Too pushy for me. I left at 2:01pm. 1 min after closing. I definitely will not return. There were still 3 other people there. No need to rush me while I’m trying to enjoy my meal. 2 stars is being nice. One for fresh fish and one for quick service.

My favorite sushi place in San Jose! The service is great, the restaurant is clean, and most importantly the food is always fresh and delicious. My favorite order is the sashimi salad — it’s so refreshing and they give huge portions. The«First Date» is also one of my favorite rolls. All in all, a great place for lunch and dinner!

I was really excited to try a new Japanese place especially since it’s so close to my house although I was very unhappy to say the least! First off they got my order wrong and the order they gave me was less than what my order cost. When I called them back they said their was nothing they could do their kitchen was closed so I would have to go back the next day. That’s understandable but when I called back the lady who answered my call was unbearably rude! I was trying to call in my order and the lady kept saying«I don’t understand what you’re saying you don’t understand me» then hung up on me. When i called back to try to resolve the issues she says«I don’t understand just come in just come in» I’m so over it TERRIBLECUSTOMERSERVICE I WILLNOTGOHEREORREFERPEOPLEHEREEVER! You never treat a customer like that!

We used to come here for dinner after the kids finished activities from the community center. They did change ownership and the food are going downhill. My daughter ordered unagi roll and the rice fall apart right after she pick up with her hand!!! Then my son loves tobico(small fish eggs) so he decided to order one of the roll(forgot the name). It stated has small fish eggs on top but it was not there(shown in the pic). He totally give me that sad look. I ordered one salmon sashimi appetizer and one hamachi sashimi appetizer. Got 4 pic evenly cut hamachi but my salmon got 5 pic but like poke size!!! I don’t think we will ever come back again. It was the biggest disappointment!

They have recently changed their menu, and reduced portions but kept the price same. I used to come here for their lunch sashimi special. They used to serve 14 piece, now they reduced it to 10 pieces. I don’t think I will come here again.

Had a post Valentine’s Day dinner here and the rolls were a little bland. The melting albacore, combo tempura and spicy poke salad was good. There was also a $ 1 special going on for a small sake. Overall, my experience here was ok.

Came here with my sister for lunch. We arrived shortly after they opened & were seated right away. The restaurant got busier as time went on. We both ordered the special bento boxes. Mine with korean bbq, tonkatsu pork, and sushi. My sister’s had sashimi, teriyaki chicken and korean bbq. We also had the Storm Bringer roll which consisted of deep fried crab on the inside, and albacore, salmon, eel, & avocado on the outside. The roll came first & was pretty fresh. I was impressed. Next came the bento boxes. I thought that the portion size for the tonkatsu was very generous. The korean bbq was also very good. The small noodle salad seemed like it wasn’t very fresh. Unfortunately, my sister found a hair in her teriyaki chicken. The staff was very apologetic though, which we appreciated. I’ll be back to try this place again for more rolls but I think I’ll lay off the bentos for a bit.

Has this place changed owners? I seem to recall a «change of ownership» sign out front sometime in 2014. Dinner was just so-so. Nothing to rave about, but not horrible. Same old, same old kind of menu. We never loved this place, but parking is convenient on a Friday night when you don’t want to have to fight for parking and then have a long wait with kids. Not many choices of Japanese restaurants in this area. We were a party of five the other evening, three adults and two grade school age children. We placed our order, FIVE meals in all, including two kids’ bento boxes. When the meals arrived, the server distributed four meals, leaving one child with nothing but a blank space. Maybe the server thought the children would be sharing a meal in which case she ought to have brought an extra plate and left the one dish in the middle between them? But the children had been sitting opposite and not directly across from each other — so it clearly wasn’t that she thought they were sharing a meal. Shouldn’t she have noticed that one person(the child) still needed a meal? Shouldn’t she have double checked with us? We had thought the meal was just late — though that would be strange in that they had ordered the exact same kids’ bento box. The right thing to do would have been for Shima Sushi to have brought out something in the interim, like a complimentary California roll for the child, to hold them over. But no, nothing was done, just a meek apology. Service was slow and communication was confusing. We will not be back.
