Modern Paving

I had my backyard almost entirely redone with Modern Paving. Gary was very personable and professional in everything from the quote to payment. The quality of the work is second to none. His team is hard working and is dedicated to getting the job done. The most important aspect of Gary and Modern Paving is I never felt like I was being cheated. Many contractors take advantage of situations where there are changes, where Gary embraces the change and feels there’s a reasonable solution to every problem.
I would highly recommend Modern Paving for any of your landscaping needs. If you look at the pictures of the work, I did not add grass just yet, due to the drought. I get so many compliments on the work done. Thanks Gary!

Looking for an honest group of contractors was on the top of my list. I called every paving company listed in H&L and Home Mag. So having said this you can only imagine how busy my schedule was meeting with each of these paving companies for an «honest» estimate. Without having to publicly compromise the other paving businesses I can honestly tell you Modern Paving is the company to work with. One competitor was insistent on having us sign a contract the same day they came out. Mind boggling given that the bid started out at 3x the cost and came down from there. The second company came in 3x the cost as well… You can only imagine the headache from there. Steve came out, took measurements, presented the plan and gave us an upfront breakdown on the cost and I can tell you it wasn’t nearly where the competitors were. I met Gary the following week! Steve and Gary have been professional– price is extremely reasonable and more than competitively priced. Posting pics– work is still in progress– will post finished job in a week! I will be referring this company to my colleagues, neighbors and friends. I plan to use them again for our front yard. Luv this crew!

We would like to thank Modern Paving for our back yard. They built a beautiful, curved freestanding wall, custom paver steps, and put large flagstones on the ground. The crew listened to our concerns and was very accommodating with our ideas. This was a challenging project due to the hilly terrain our house is situated. Their pricing was very competitive and we were very happy with the end results.

Modern Paving did an outstanding job with all phases of the landscape and hardscape on a recent new home I built in Cupertino. Not only was there service top notch, but they were incredibly competitive with their pricing. Gary took a ton of time working with me and my clients in finishing their paving and landscape and the end result was beautiful. Highly recommend them for all hardscape and exterior renovations and construction.

I’ll start with a simple, but honest assessment of the job that Modern Paving did for our family. I do this because some folks only read a line or two. If I could give Modern Paving more than 5 stars I would! Let me tell you why…
Due to the drought we knew it was necessary to remove our large front yard lawn and install high quality synthetic turf. I got two estimates in person and several on the phone. What set Modern Paving apart was the attitude that Gary brought to his craft. Gary was on time, extremely patient with all the questions we asked, informative, and pleasant. His rate was reasonable especially when you consider the large team of very competent landscapers he had working on the property.
We love our lawn and get a kick-​out of people driving by and looking at it. People walking look as well. Our new front yard is absolutely beautiful thanks to Modern Paving! … and our turf helps with the water bill too!

I had a great experience with Modern Paving! They absolutely transformed the exterior of my house from an outdated mess to a house and yard that people stop and compliment all the time. They installed a paver driveway, bluestone walkway and entry, synthetic grass, drought tolerant landscaping and designed and built stone planters and benches that run the length of my house. As an interior designer, I’m quite particular and changed my finish choices a few times, but Steve and Gary were patient and did everything possible to make me happy. They were also quick to respond to all of my calls and texts throughout the process. I have recommended them to many friends.

I don’t write reviews often, in fact I can count how many times I’ve written a review on one hand. I choose to write reviews only for those companies and restaurants that truly wow me, and I have to say, wow!
Let me start by saying that I spent a long time looking for the right company and people to come and perform the work in my backyard. I have a small home with an equally backyard, 17×38 feet. Maybe more narrow than small. The problem with such a backyard is that most anything of a standard size will look huge in the yard and cause its look to over power other features. Gary and Steve came by a couple of times to offer suggestions and show designs that they have used in other similar yards. This was of great help to me as I do not have an eye for such things.
In the end, with my not wanting to have too much yard work, as well as the size of the yard, I went with a mostly paver stone hardscape with an added trim border and edge landscape of shrubs and flowers all irrigated by low pressure water lines. In the beginning I didn’t think as well as Gary and Steve didn’t think that I would need any drainage so the quote did not include this. After starting the project Gary called to inform me that he was putting in drainage because he just didn’t want any issues for me in the future with so much hardscape. He covered the entire cost for that addition himself. He said, because he suggested in the beginning that it probably wasn’t needed, but he felt it might be needed, he didn’t feel right trying to have me pay for it at all.
This was more than I would have ever expected from anyone, let alone a contractor who is running a business. This is mainly the reason I am writing this review. I want everyone to know that Gary will take care of you. What you need, and want, he will make sure you get both, and he wont gouge you for it. The workmanship is above board, and I mean its great. Ever paver cut was spot on and the entire project was done in less than a week.
If you are currently looking for someone to take on a large landscape project or even a small one, Modern Paving and Gary McCann are definitely your best choice.
