As far as I know Mosher’s Ltd is the only men’s clothing store in downtown San Jose. The owner, Ed Mosher, is a 1952 grad of San Jose State and is one of their biggest supporters. He still runs the store and is well known around town. He has been in the menswear business for many years. Mosher’s offers classic styles and great service, conveniently located in the Fairmont Hotel. Best parking is in Pavilion garage, $ 5 flat fee on weekends and after 6 weekdays.

The previous reviewers hit all the salient points but to expand on those — Mosher’s is one of the last independently owned menswear stores in the South Bay still dealing predominantly in Ivy League, Trad, Classic American style clothing. The style is classic and will always look good regardless of what is in fashion. Coincidentally, the style of clothing sold here by Ed Mosher is in fashion right now so you can’t really go wrong. It’s fairly small, located inside the Fairmont Hotel. I didn’t have too much time when I visited, which was a shame. I really enjoyed talking with Ed. He’s got an encyclopedic knowledge of San Jose history and menswear trends. Ties here are made in USA — prints and Brooks striped. I can’t recall the manufacturer’s name but they’re one of the few(maybe only) companies making ties in the USA nowadays. Shirts were by F.A. McCluer. I didn’t see who made his suits and sportcoats but he had a nice madras sportcoat by Haspel. Interesting anecdote — Ed told me about how he sold clothing to the men of IBM. IBM had a very strict dress code in the early post-war years and when these men left to found their own companies they summarily abolished business dress standards. Long story short, here we are today with men going to work wearing food stained t-shirts with some ironic tagline across the front and ratty sweatpants.

With impeccably tasteful clothing of the sort once called«Ivy League,» attentive personal service so that you get a perfect fit, and a link to San Jose’s history(the proprietor, Ed Mosher, knows — and knew — everyone who’s anyone in San Jose), Mosher’s Ltd. is the personification of old school class. He’s located in the love Fairmont Hotel, and I feel a part of the fabric of the city when I shop there. Mosher’s actually been around since the 50s, but I first went to Mosher’s 15 years ago, when there were still multiple men’s clothing shops in the city. He was on First St. next to Original Joe’s. Now Mosher’s is just about the last real men’s clothing store. When it’s gone, one of the great pleasures of being a grown-up man in San Jose will be gone forever. And we can all shop at Target and Walmart and Ross.
