San Jose Municipal Firing Range

Their monthly outreach course is fantastic for newbies. It happens during 2 – 5 pm the 2^nd Saturday and it’s run by friendly volunteers like Carla, Dave, etc.
You will listen to a safety course and have about 1 hr of practice with 0.22 pistols and rifles.
They offer free donuts, cookies, and soda. All service is free. Therefore please donate CASH to them. I came in a rush without even ATM cards so I feel embarrassed. They are not high tech to receive donation via PayPal, check, …
I will visit again during paid hours to make up my donation. The range only allow pistols, 0.22 rifles, shotguns.

Great small range in the South Bay. There are only a few lanes, so you may have to wait. You’ll need to have your own gun and ammo as they don’t rent here. Be mindful of the hours as juniors train here as well.

This is my first time visiting the SJMFR, it’s a cozy and friendly place. I have met many friendly and knowledgable ROs there, 2PM of every 2^nd Saturday of the month is their free public outreach day and if you are curious about firearms and shooting in general, you gotta go check it out!
This range is open to public on most of the weekday afternoons, and the lane fee is $ 7 an hour, super reasonable. I highly encourage people to come here and try them out, even better if you become one of the volunteers!

This is the best place to shot indoor in San Jose. Friendly staff/​volunteers. Maybe me feel right at home! I’ll be going to their second Saturday event for sure.

Great place to do holster work during action pistol night. Very well maintains and good for all shooters as long as you know the 4 basic rules. Like coming here to pratice my appendix carry and moving on target. Very fun be safe go home in one piece. Not like TM! Milpitas

I came here during their community outreach event which took place every second Saturday of the month. They have volunteers come and offer free shooting classes, guns, and ammo. They also accept donations.
I was told that during their events like these, usually there’s a lot of people so if you come a bit late, there may be no parking. What I did was park in the parking lot right next to the range.
Took my range bag and headed over there and was greeted by a friendly guy (Dave). He directed me to a lady who was very enthusiastic and signed told me to sign my name since there was a queue. After signing my name, I sat down for about 10 – 15 minutes to listen to a range officer talk about safety course since most of the people who came here was their first time shooting a gun and safety was the #1 priority.
After the instructor finished, we were able to use free eye and ear protection. We went inside the range and was assigned an instructor (I was assigned Nicki). Nicki did a quick demo of how to use a .22. We also chatted about guns and ammo here and there. When Nicki was finished demonstrating, another person and I took turns shooting. It was my first time shooting a .22 and let me tell you, it’s the best caliber to set a foundation for shooting. I went straight to a 9 mm and you could feel the difference because of the recoil.
When I finished shooting, I returned my ear protection and went outside to chat some more with a couple of people. I also found out they they offered free snacks and refreshments!
Wanting to shoot my own gun (9mm Springfield XD9 Mod2), I asked the lady when I was able to shoot my own and was put into a waiting list again. I waited about 30 minutes which was understandable because there were others waiting to shoot. It reminded me of my first time shooting and it was a rush.
I went to my lane and was asked if I wanted an instructor and I said sure. Bertrand was a great instructor so if you want to practice on your accuracy, I highly suggest him! He’s very patient and very hands-​on which was perfect since I’m a kinesthetic learner (hands-​on learner).
I spent about 5 hours in the range and that was the longest time I’ve been in a range. I also had the most time and learned so much from this small group of people. They were all friendly and welcoming and I’d love to come back here.
During my time here, in total I was given free instructions, instructor time, targets, use of gun, ammo, refreshments, and ear protection which could total to over $ 100. You could tell that these people really love what they’re doing and were very genuine.

This is the first indoor range that I’ve taken Fred to (Fred is my Glock 9mm). Because it’s indoor, it’s louder. It’s also a small place, only five lanes. I can see how it would get filled up. But I was there on a Saturday afternoon, and there were not many people there; strange. Maybe I was there at a slow time. But on their free days, be prepared to wait.
There were two rangemasters on site. At the other two ranges I’ve visited, you’re on your own, and you don’t meet up with the rangemaster unless you break the rules. Here, the rangemasters were more helpful than they were expected to be, chatting it up with the shooters, giving tips on improving aim, sweeping away the brass. There are rules here too, and when you’re dealing with a weapon designed to inflict serious injury or death, safety is emphasized strongly at all ranges, including at this one. These rangemasters may get in your face too, but that appeared to not be their style.
What made this range far better than the one I frequent is how you handle the targets. Set your target on the piece of cardboard hanging from the line, and wheel the line so that the target goes where you want it, from 19 to 50 feet. Once you empty the magazine, you can reel it in and check and mark how you did, see where you need to improve. Other indoor ranges may be the same way, I don’t know. But it’s far better than outdoor ranges, waiting for cease fire, when you have 20+ bullet holes to check and you don’t know which ones were made after you did adjustments.
Both newbies and experienced shooters will feel at home here. If you’re nervous about holding a gun in your hands, the rangemasters (and likely other shooters) will put you at ease.
A fantastic little range in the industrial area just south of Spartan Stadium. It’s worth the trip, and Fred and I hope to make more trips here.

Brought some family members here for their first time shooting — thanks to the volunteers here (especially Mike) we had an incredible experience!

Awesome range with great volunteer instructors and Range officers who are ready to help you improve your skills or get started! They have BBQ and food sometimes in summer and donations are worth the price of admission. One new thing is every month there is an action pistol class where you can learn how to get started drawing and shooting a pistol from holster in a tactical standing position and learning how to reload tactically for shooting close up targets.

I’ve been coming here at least once or twice a month now and as an update, its only gotten better. I’ve had the chance to shoot while RO Bryan has been on duty and it has been a pleasure to shoot while he and a few other gentlemen gave my brother and I pointers on tightening our groups. If you haven’t yet, give this range a try. The service that the volunteers provide for veteran and new shooters is top notch compared to other ranges. Also, they hold a BBQ on a certain Saturday of each month where you can bring new folks, your SO, or older kids to try shooting several different calibers and get familiar with the sport. Guns, ammo, and food are provided and donations are welcomed!

I’ve been wanting to go to a gun range for awhile now. But for someone who doesn’t own a gun nor have I ever fired one, this was a good place to go. They have a free session every second Saturday of the month. This place was right near my house and I’ve passed it many times. It’s a fairly small place and kind of hidden, so look out for their sign. There’s someone with a sign up sheet and the expected wait was about 45 mins. Depends on how busy they are. My girlfriends and I waited about 20 – 25 mins. They provide you with earplugs, headphones, and glasses. We were taught how to handle and shoot various guns from riffle to pistols to revolver. Our first gun was a riffle, so we were like omg. But it wasn’t too bad, since our instructor guided us throughly. I thought we were only going to use one type of gun, so this was a surprise. We got to try 4 different guns. Our last one, he let us pick. Course, my friend wanted to try the sniper riffle. It made us all laugh. According to my friend, I’m gonna die first in a zombie apocalypse because my shots were off. They also provide coffee, water, pastries, and donuts. Everyone here volunteers their time to teach these sessions, which I think is great. They take donations that day. So donate! They have normal sessions where you can come in and shoot, but I don’t know the details of that. They’re websites lists the times. I would come here again for another session!

My review is based solely on their shooting training provided every 2^nd Saturday of the month. It is free and open to the public and they do accept donations. It’s a tiny little spot tucked away in SJ, you’ll easily miss it so just slow down when you’re coming nearer. Get there early because, again, it’s free and people do show up. They provide the gun, ammo, eye and ear protection and targets as well, which is nice. They even provide free (generic) coffee and some snacks.
We got there around 3pm and had to wait about 45 minutes. Our trainer, Nicki, provided us with very useful tips and shared her knowledge and experiences. I’m not at all a good shooter but she gave me tips and told me what I needed to work on which is helpful for next time. They are extremely nice people and just want to share their knowledge of guns and educate people on how to use it properly to protect themselves.
I do want to mention one more time, it is donations — this is a free service to the public, please don’t take advantage of it. Guns and ammo are expensive! They are just volunteers, they do not get paid for this service. If you want to go to a paid gun shooting training class, expect to pay on avg $ 200 per class, that’s just something to think about.

I tried this place out for the first time and I have to say I will be going here again. It’s just $ 7 per person for the range fee! Also the volunteers here are really helpful and provide great advices for shooting. There are a total of 5 shooting lanes, however, on Tuesdays it appears to not be busy at all.

Absolutely the most friendly range in south bay. I often go after dinner for an hour and the fee is $ 7. Very reasonable. Its maintained by a group of volunteers so please make sure you help to clean up after you are done and if possible make some donations.

I used to come shoot here as a kid, back when Lloyd and Bob were always there. They were the funniest old guys, and made it pretty memorable. Haven’t been here since, but I’m giving four stars for the old crew :)

Been here twice and plan to go more often. Don’t come unprepared, they don’t sell amo or rent firearms. With limited lanes, you might also have a small wait time. All that is offset by the extremely helpful Range Masters they have. They’ll great you with a smile, and are very respectful when asking you to comply with the range’s rules. This is a no-​frills setup, but it’s more than you can ask for at $ 5! It’ll become a regular stop for me.

Fantastic municipal range. Only has 6 or so stalls, so it can get busy at times. But it’s run by some very nice, dedicated people. It’s clean and professional but even first time shooters will feel welcome here. Eyes, ears, and foam plugs are all free, along with NRA competition targets. Range time is $ 2.50 for half, $ 5.00 for an hour (you must pay for an hour). Cash only.
Beware of ammunition restrictions. I only shot handguns, but they do restrict you to TMJ ammunition such as Speer. It is harder ammunition to come by and the RM will check before you’re allowed on the line.
