Foodnet Supermarket

Ok. So I grew up in SoCal and have pretty much grown up on 99 Ranch Market from Rowland Heights to San Diego. I used to think those were dirty as hell. In recent years though they’ve really cleaned up their act and most stores seemed renovated. I moved to the Richmond District and the 99 was just too far. Thankfully there were a dozen asian markets from there and to the sunset district. New May Wah was my go to over there. I have since moved to San Lorenzo looking for similar markets close by. I have gone to the 99 in Dublin but it’s right on the brink of being inconvenient. So I put my faith in Unilocal and surprisingly there are about 8 markets near me. First I went to Pacific Ranch Supermarket. That place was pretty small but the closest to me with plenty of parking and a lot of bare necessities that I can’t find at say a Safeway. Today I venture out to Foodnet. It was slightly larger and had a bigger selection. I was pretty happy, till… I go down the aisle with an assortment of dried goods such as asian beans and flours and bamboo leaves. It hit me like a bag of piss. It was piss. I was like what the crap? Why? I figured it out, there was spilled flour and other dried goods spilling from bags bitten by rats. I see two workers, one with a face mask, on their knees sweeping everything up. I see a bunch of rat shit and an inescapable stench of ammonia. I wouldn’t buy anything in that aisle for months because I suspect they won’t spray sanitize any of it nor will they throw out the unbitten bags. It was quite disturbing. I had to put the 5 spice jar from the other side of the mayhem back just out of principal. The butcher from the fish department had complete view of the clean up and seemed disgusted himself. The produce seemed fine. Bought some of that and the hispanic meat butcher was nice enough too. I’m going to keep looking for other markets and may come back only for select items unless I can find a replacement. Most produce was reasonably priced. They have more exotic items like both japanese and chinese daikon radish, tumeric, taro, and some good looking fruit. The scallions, however, didn’t look too hot and seemed like small bundles for 1.49. That’s not bad for an American supermarket, but part of the awesomeness that is Chinese/​asian supermarkets is that it should be more like under a dollar. Not my first choice.

I asked where the soy milk and vita soy coconut milk was. i wanted the half gallon. there were so many a couple weeks ago! they kept asking if i wanted coconut milk and pointed to the coconut juice and if i wanted to packets. they were so obnoxious and made fun of me behind my back. the «manager» started understanding me when i requested to see the manager. (a customer kindly pointed out where it was.) i sassed them back.
later, i said that i need to ask a manager a few questions. she said they don’t sell vita soy anymore, but i found cartons of it! (just not the half gallon). and something along the lines of ‚” you only come Wednesday.” it is friday. I usually come on Saturdays…

We were in the San Leandro area doing some shopping and I decided I wanted to check out this Asian market. I’ve been to many 99 Ranches and like that cause I don;t have to go into Oakland Chinatown with the parking hassles, but those are spread out far apart. I go to Dublin, but that’s a drive out there, so San Leandro needed checking out. I heard about this place through my BF’s sister who lives in Alameda. I can see how easy this is to get to from the south end of Alameda. Parking is easy… big plus and park away from door dingers!
By the shape of the roof line, looks to be an old Safeway building. The inside looks just like a 99 Ranch but maybe a little smaller. All the same departments are here, like the Chinese ready to eat deli, dim sum area, meat dept. with live seafood as well as whole fish laying on ice. Roast duck hanging in the window as well! Prices seem a bit cheaper than the 99 Ranch on some things. We just ate lunch, so I was sort of bummed I couldn’t partake in some of the tasty looking foods on display. I did find some pork rinds really cheap and some funny Asian snacks that I have no idea what it is since it wasn’t labeled in English, but it looked interesting! The crowds were not bad, being it’s not the weekend we went. It’s good to know of other alternatives to Chinatown and 99 Ranch. If you need help with anything here, it probably helps if you speak Chinese… of any flavor.

Yeah the Chinese bald guy is a dick. Also a male cashier. They weigh your fish and then cut it up so they can charge for weight before they clean it. They cashier asked if I wanted a bag and then just threw the bag at me and looked at me like go ahead bag your own groceries. I’m lucky I live in Oakland and can go downtown. I was just passing by in this Neighborhood. First and last time I come to this place.

A-​ok to get some Asian food products such as rice, produce, take out food without having to go to Chinatown. Parking can be a problem though on weekends but come early to get your groceries.

It’s an Asian supermarket, so you get the rudeness and crowding like SF Chinatown without the traffic, sort of. The only two good points about this compared to 88 Market is the parking is easier, although busy on the weekends; and they have a 5% off your total purchase on the weekends.
The workers are extremely rude and most of the time ignore you. Once a worker instead of just saying «excuse me» to have us get out of his way he whistled as if we were dogs. Then there are the guys working behind the meat and fish counter who are complete jerks, especially the Filipino guy. Even though they might have a sale I’d rather pay extra to get it at Safeway or Lucky’s. And they need some way to help people in the order they show up, with either a number ticket system or set up a way to line up. I don’t know how many times people just cut in front of me to get service first. Or if they speak Spanish they get preferential treatment since most of the workers are hispanics.
Also it’s best if you could go on a weekday because on the weekends it’s basically a «free-​for-​all». You get to see the true natural of Asians shopping, and it’s not pretty. Think holiday shopping a week before Christmas. It’s not worth saving 5%.

Great selection and my go to place for veggies and fruit as well as some specialty foods. However, the staff seems a bit rude and aloof. Could be racial discrimination, I don’t know. The cashiers don’t even greet me. But the veggies are cheep and fresh. So, I’ll keep coming back but I hope the attitudes will change.

The Chinese bald guy with some hair on the sides totally ignored me as I waited patiently at the butcher shelf. He was assisting a Filipina lady then he completely ignored me and assisted his «friend» with some chicken pieces. Oh, and he was speaking Chinese to his «friend», thinking that I don’t understand him. Finally, another butcher helped me and I spoke to him in Chinese, the rude butcher was taken aback.
I would not get meat (butcher area) again with that kind of rude service. The place wasn’t even busy.
Overall the staff here especially the Chinese ones are rude and useless.

This place is fun! I feel like I’ve been transported to another country. Many items you can’t find at you regular supermarket. Friendly good service. No it’s not luckys, but it is cheap & different. I’ll be back !!

Tried to buy fish here, but, Race discrimination at this store if you do not speak their language! NO SERVICE AT ALL!

Don’t buy crab at this supermarket if you ever bought more than two crabs you will definitely get home with a dead crab in each bag. I bought 10 crabs 5 in each bag got home there were 2 dead crabs. One in each bag. This happen every Time I bought crab. They don’t let you see them put them in the bag. It’s already tied up in plastic.

People are nice here and the prices of the produce is super cheap. Better than going to Safeway. I love the discounts on Sunday’s. Highly recommend this place. 4 stars only because this place has a weird odor.

I had to buy a couple items for this dish I was making for the night and decided to buy them here since I was just next door, having lunch with a friend. This place has a lot of things to choose from but it’s also really cramped. Everything seems pretty fresh but compared to 99 Ranch, they’re a little smaller.

Only mature service men in seafood dept need to smile. Otherwise price is very good.

Poor service

Well need some stuff for my dish i am making tonight so I drop by this little Asian market, they have all fresh fruit and veggies, meat and seafood. This place is a bit run down but has everything fresh and cheap produce is pretty good here !

The ready to eat section has several ladies there try to serve the people with gloves. initially, I thought they used the glove for clean service of food. However, they seem serve with the gloves because they don’t want to make their hands dirty. For my case, I order the BBQ pork, and the male chef try to serve with a new glove, and then there s a woman cashier suddenly ruah in and chop the BBQ pork. She didn’t have a new gloves, and I didn’t even know why she suddenly come in to help. Later she collect the cash from me and went back to work with the SaME gloves!!! I was so mad, and I absolutely decided not buying any RTE food there!!! Not even with the damn coupon!!!

Rating for the young, non-​asian guy behind the meat counter… friendly, helpful and keeps an eye on who is next in line! He’ll take care of you and make sure you ARE next and helped accordingly!
I was standing there and 2 older asian women tried to yell out their order to the next available guy. Rude! I would’ve said something but the nice guy behind the counter said «she’s next»…whew! that never happens at a chinese supermarket! Thanks!

I love going to Asian Supermarkets because of the low prices on ramen/​noodles, produce, seafood, and meats. So much variety on anything you need when it comes to Asian snacks. I like their ramen/​noodle isle. So much variety to choose from. I always go directly to their ramen/​noodle isle whenever I go into any Asian Supermarket.
I brought me my mom so she could look around and she was surprised on their low prices on everything especially the produce and seafood. I go jogging almost every morning at Marina and Foodnet Supermarket is so close that it won’t hurt to stop by whenever I need to buy a few things. You won’t have to worry about parking because there is plenty.

I’m happy that I’ve found this place! This is exactly what I was looking for. A spot to find a bunch of asian goods for decent or even cheap prices.
It makes me think of all the asian markets that I’ve grown up with huge! Lots of variety and once you get onto their lot there’s tons of produce at the front for really cheap. I mean like 10cents for an orange and stuff like that.
Perfect to find a bunch of the veggies I haven’t been able to get. Someone might say this place is a little messy but ya there is stuff all over the place. They got fresh seafood and even a side that sells freshly cooked chinese food! What’s good I’m gonna get some roast duck while I do my groceries right?! If you’re in this area looking for a good asian market this is the spot to go to. I went to another one in the area, wacksville and straight bank for weakshit.
The parking lot is crackin by the way, whole lot of people beware of the people that can’t drive or park.
I’ll be going here from now on.
