Rita is the best server. First time here if was after 8pm. Second time lunch. Third early evening. Our first experience here was perfect. Food was hot, authentic, and magnificent. Our server helped in any way she could, and was friendly the whole time. The second time I came in was with a co-worker. That time my cheese enchilada was hot and toasty on the outside but cold and unmelted on the inside. Luckily I wasn’t paying. This most recent excursion from Austin to get enchiladas was also a bust. Food was ordered and hit out table in minutes. I’ve never known Quality food to be prepared in minute’s, except with Taco’s. I had cheese enchilada with chile con carne. The carne was over cooked, under seasoned, chalky ground beef. Completely ruined the dish. Well after $ 23 fifteen minute dinner. We won’t be returning a fourth time. Off to find better quality enchiladas. Not sure how many individuals voted this best in the area but with tables turning over every fifteen minutes I bet it was most of the student body.

I went for the first time to check this place out I ordered to go the place was very small. I got home the food was in huge containers I had ordered enchiladas, fajitas plate, and bean cheese and beef nachos. First off the nachos were chalupa shells broken into chips with the toppings slopped on there … The beef had no flavor. My enchiladas were really cheesy and had little to no gravy the rice was bland and hard my chalupa was on top of the beans so it got soggy… the guacamole was a little black so not very impressed.

Food is tradition for some but I don’t choose this one unless someone else has asked. Restroom is for contortionists. Crowded usually. Prices fair, food average.

My mom has been dining here since college. Every time we make a trip to San Marcos, we eat here. My step dad has brought home food(to Austin) twice now in the last week. Last week, we got what we paid for and were happy. Tonight, the containers practically had nothing in them. One plate of enchiladas just had rice and beans and the others only had one tiny enchilada with some rice and beans. They also had gotten the tacos wrong. We called to let them know(because we live over an hour away, and there was no way of showing them in person) and the manager basically accused us of lying. They asked for pictures(even though we explained to them that we ate the food anyways, so the pictures would just be empty containers) and then completely ignored us. Needless to say, we’re disappointed and probably done dining here. The employees were very disrespectful.

The margaritas are cheap big & great! Hot sauce is hot & tasty… get Herbert’s special or the combo because the guac is delish! It’s been my favorite spot since being at SWT in the 1980’s!

My friend and I went to check out San Marcos with no real agenda, and we immediately saw this place and went in. I had the Herbert Special combo, my friend picked a different combo, and both were huge. Pretty standard Americanized Mexican/TexMex. The enchilada was drowned in sauce, but good. The salsa is HOT. Not extremely hot, but I stuck to eating the chips. They had Big Red to drink, which I liked. Fast service and cheap.

My step dad was a regular in his college days, so on our way to San Antonio to drop me off after break he insisted we stop here. Was very shocked when we pulled up, this place definitely looks like a dive from the outside, but ended up being very clean and having a fun family-friendly atmosphere. I’d give 4.5 but I can’t. Enchiladas were by far the BEST I’ve ever had. The gravy enveloping them was decadent. They have ignited a spiritual foodie journey to learn how to make my own enchiladas at home(as I now live in Washington). Why not 5 stars? I’m picky about my guacamole, and theirs just lacked that avocado flavor I adore so much. I’m currently contemplating making a 2 hour drive when I go home just so I can get my mouth on those bad boys. I think whoever is lucky enough to be in the vicinity of Herberts should make a stop, for the enchiladas and for me.

The food is great. The menudo is clean, spiced just right, cut into small chunks and reasonably priced to boot. I noticed yesterday the place has no natural light and the ceiling is really low, which doesn’t take away from the food but it was just something I noticed.

Got to return to another restaurant from my college days! Still excellent as it was in the past. Some places are just fine staying the same. Long line of people waiting for a table, this is normal. However unlike most places, Herberts turns tables RAPIDLY! Worth the small wait or even a long one! They still make some of the best enchiladas! Had the beef enchiladas today with refried beans, rice, and flour tortillas. Great chips and salsa too! When in San Marcos, you must try Herberts!

Hands down my favorite place to go for enchiladas and Mexican food in general. I grew up eating here and can’t visit home without wanting to swing by Herbert’s. It is a great place for families because they have something for everyone, even picky eaters. For me Herbert’s food is comfort food; beef enchiladas, chicken flautas, tacos, and great salsa. My go to meal is the beef enchilada plate with gravy, it has a great balance between filling, tortilla, gravy, and cheese. It is what I always order the first time I go to any Mexican restaurant. There is generally a wait on the weekends, especially during summer due to its location by the river. There is a very small parking lot behind the restaurant but generally people do street parking in front. The restaurant has a small enclosed waiting area in the front with benches for seating. The inside is crammed with tables and wait staff bustling about quickly serving guests. Service is fast, friendly, and you can ask for extra salsa and chips for no extra.

Another one that I dont get. Its called Herberts tacos but they seemed to have everything on the menu but tacos. The beans were tasty. The rice was ok. I ordered a chile Relleno and that was decent. If it was really inexpensive I would give it four stars but the price places them Into a category that has a lot of competition. You can get better Mexican food for the price. It is a one and done type of restaurant..

Wow, what a gem! I came here for breakfast last weekend with some friends. When you pull up you learn that Herbert & Co. are very industrious. There is a Salsa and gift company, a grocery store, and the taco hut. I’ll keep this to the taco hut though for all my adoring fans sake of time. Haha. Okay maybe I’m feeling a little to big for my britches. Anyways, like i said I came here for breakfast. It was a very rainy early morning so the place was empty. Hmmmm, interesting. But my buddy had said that when he’s been there in the past for lunch the line was out the door. I’ll take his word since the food was amazing! I ordered the carne guisada breakfast tacos, fair warning they come a la carte so if you want anything with them you better order it that way. That aside these tacos were amazing. The meat was very tender and dried out as can happen with carne guisada. The gravy was very flavorful and thick so it stayed on the meat and in the tortilla. The tortillas were homemade and crazy light and fluffy. These were definitely some of the best carne guisada tacos I’ve had, wow. The salsa that day had some extra kick and boy did it go great with the richness of my tacos. My friends both ordered the Huevos Rancheros, now I won’t say that I ordered wrong because those carne guisada tacos were phenominal. But damn their food looked even more amazing and they both cleaned their plates. Next time I am ordering that for sure.

I hate writing reviews like this I really wish I had something positive to say about this place but I just can’t think of anything other than how bad the food was. I never would have chosen to come here but I was visiting some of my wife’s family and it was their idea. I could tell things were going to go bad when the old man who suggested this place declared that it was Mexican food and couldn’t understand when I tried to explain that it was Tex-Mex. I think the highlight of the experience was when I noticed that the cartoon character of Herbert in a vague distant sort of way almost looked like president Obama. The food was all basically tortillas and some sort of cheap Velveeta substitute. I ordered fish tacos and they didn’t taste fresh at all. I’m almost positive the fish was frozen before it made its way into my shamefully bad tortilla. I won’t go back here again unless I have no other choice and if I do I’ll get the simplest option possible. I’m thinking it’s got to be hard for these folks to screw up crispy tacos. skip this place. it’s horrible.

Ugh… so torn. The chips and salsa was delicious, but everything else was just about 100% flavorless. I was so excited when we got there because there was no wait and it’s such a neat atmosphere. I was even more excited after the first bite of chips and salsa, but that’s absolutely where my joy ended. First bite of the beef taco and all of my excitement deflated. See, ground beef(or picadillo) tacos are absolutely my favorite. I crave it. This meat didn’t even have a beef flavor, much less any seasoning or add in like carrots or onions. 100% flavorless = huge disappointment. The enchilada was just horrible. I covered everything in salsa and it was palatable, but for the first time EVER I left food on my plate at a Mexican restaurant. I hope this was just a fluke(because there are so many 4-star reviews), but I doubt I’ll ever make it back here to find out. I’d rather go somewhere like Garcia’s where I know I won’t be left wanting.

I checked out this place today after reading all the hype about their queso and enchiladas. Being raised by a Hispanic mother and grandmother, I’m a little picky when it comes to Mexican food. First impression: nothing fancy but not a total dive, plenty of parking and easy to find. Upon entering, I’m greeted and told to pick my table. I sit down and seconds later, chips and salsa and then my waiter. I’m liking the pace here! We get our drinks right away and their iced sweet tea is sublime… the chips and salsa… amazing. I’m happy. The menu had a good selection but since the queso, tortillas and enchiladas came highly recommended, I ordered: queso and tortillas to start, a cheese enchilada combo and one verde chicken enchilada a la carte. My love and I shared this and it was plenty. All of it, beginning to end was delicious. I can’t even tell you which part of the meal I liked best because it was all equally tasty. I really look forward to returning to this gem… great food, friendly and speedy service all at an affordable price!

This review is primarily for their Cheese Enchiladas, which are some of the best ones I’ve had. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years now, and it’s great every time. The only thing that changes is that the line keeps getting longer to get in. All the other items and dishes are good, but not as good as the enchiladas which is their signature item. And even though these are more Tex-Mex than Mexican, I still love them. And love the old school hole-in-the-wall location that is a constant in this ever-changing world. Not to mention that their prices have barely changed with a plate of enchiladas, rice & beans costing only $ 6.59. This place won’t disappoint, as long as you get the cheese enchiladas. And get here early for lunch or dinner or you’ll be waiting for a while.
