Hey, I’m no ramen expert, but this place sucked really hard. The noodles were hard. The egg in the oily broth looked rotten and had to yokes like some type of mutant. The service was bad, people were rude and I didn’t even finish my ramen before I bounced.

I stopped by on a Saturday night with two local friends. We were all pretty ravenous, so we went to town on the ordering. My friends got yakisoba and ramen with roast pork to share between them. We also got edamame, chicken karaage, and gyoza to share. All of the appetizers were quite tasty! Next time, I might consider trying out their flavored karaage. I liked the ramen at the time I ate it. I got the regular Ajisen without the green onions and with extra bok choy and extra noodle. The soup, however, was beyond greasy. The whole top layer was super oily. And then I got a pretty bad stomach ache later. I think I will avoid their greasy tonkotsu soup in the future if I return.

My family and I were looking for a Ramen place in San Mateo, first stop was Santa Ramen, but they were closed on a Saturday afternoon. So we decided to go to downtown San Mateo, we heard of Dojo Ramen but it looks crowded, so we just drove on 3rd street and voila! We found Ajisen Ramen. We waited for about 25 minutes to seat. The kids were getting restless and us too. Finally they called us, we sat and ordered our ramen. I ordered a side order of the volcano sauce. Our ramen came and it was delicious. I ordered the spicy pork, awesome! Didn’t need the volcano sauce. Definitely coming back. I recommend it. Four stars.

Pretty good ramen. They are pretty consistent with all their locations. The service at this location was a bit slow.

I came here with my friend after Dojo Ramen sold out and the Ramen Parlar was way too busy. We came here after 2pm on a Saturday and this place still had a lot of people eating lunch. There was no wait so that was nice. The menu had pictures of most of the food and there were a lot of choices. We both ordered #1 Hand Made Premium Pork Ramen($ 10.95) because it was the most popular item in the menu. We waited a few minutes and both of our food came out at the same time. The broth was good and I could see it being salty for some people. The meat was good and the noodles were good. I liked it and would recommend it. Good place for ramen!

Get that premium pork ramen. Don’t try the other flavors as they are sub-par and then you’ll end up complaining about how avg this place is. This place deserves more recognition for their pork ramen that meat is deliciouso. The ramen itself is debatable. +5 for the premium pork –1 for the ramen noodles +1 for that arcade machine that spits out cards after you play… ingenious –3 for always refusing to sit me by a booth! +10 for the AJISENFRIES(DAYMTHEY’REGOOD… I think they’re breaded with panko) verdict: pajamas

The last experience I had with Ajisen will be just that — my last. We spent $ 47.85 here… and when the bill came back I checked it(as I do everywhere). The server had WRITTENINHEROWNTIP(!!! WTH??) She also totaled it and put a circle for me to simply sign. UHMNO. I didn’t sign it at all. I crossed out the tip area and placed a zero. I left. While I should have spoken to her, she doesn’t speak good English — and there is no other people who work there besides the kitchen staff. So there was no use. She would have to eat the bill or just have us pay the tab at $ 47.85. I thought«What a jerk» and I won’t be back. That was it. Two weeks later I’m reviewing my statement — SHEPUSHEDITTHROUGHWITHTHETIPSHETRIEDTOENFORCE! Who does this woman think she is??? In case you’re wondering: it’s the lady with a bowl-cut bob, and is very rude. She’s probably mid-40’s and a little on the chubby side. Side note: We’ve always tipped 20%(doubling the tax and rounding up) even though she does nothing(we sit next to the kitchen, and she literally walks 2 steps to put our soup down). She also always shoves the soup onto the tables and refuses to really«wait» on us. But being nice, we’ve always tipped. There’s a MILLION Ramen shops in Downtown — I’ll gladly give them my money instead! I’ll be placing this amount as fraud with my FI and Ajisen can figure it out later. Jerks.

This place means business– they have the typical clip board waitlist and they’re really moving to get people in and out. The service is incredibly fast(probably so that they can flip the tables) and the food was tasty. Didn’t seem substantially different than any other ramen place but considering how popular they are and how long the waits can be, it’s nice to have multiple options.

Ramen is very good. The pork broth is outstanding. I highly recommend the volcano sauce– umami sweet and spicy. Not ultra crazy hot, but just enough to get you going. Service is a little weak– lack of husbandry. Water filled once, no napkins or chop sticks. But that’s ok, I got over it because the ramen was stellar. We went at 1330 so the line wasn’t too crazy.

An excellent choice if you don’t want to wait your entire evening at Dojo or Parlor ramen. Seating is much faster, the ramen is good — not amazing, but very good nonetheless and the service is good! They specialize in only a few ramen dishes with copious amounts of noodles and base ingredients. Delicious! Give it a shot ;)

Really really good food! Fast service. And nice lively downtown spot nestled in San Mateo. Nice ambience and comfortable seating. BUT the service is bad. They circle the tip section every time, and expect a tip for poor service. The Woman, bowl cut hairstyle mid 40’s bigger lady does not provide good service and charged our card with her own tip, regardless of what we put, which was no tip for bad bad service. Had to dispute with credit card company. Keep your receipts and beware ramen fans.

Ajisen is all over Asia and I’ve had my fair share of eating at them waiting for flights at various international airports. Let me tell you, they are excellent! I can always rely on them to deliver tasty, fresh, hot ramen in a jiffy. This particular store is very disappointing. The ramen broth is subpar, service sucks, and it’s overall just a disappointment to its name. I don’t know what happened but don’t come here in search of the same caliber. Go to any of the other 10 ramen restaurants in the area instead.

Ramen = my Asian comfort food. Nothing hits the spot like a hot bowl of ramen. This was the last ramen place in San Mateo that I haven’t tried and I wanted to get that checked off my list. Though it was okay, I my favorites still remain at the top of my list. I got the Raikumen with the premium tender ribs and the volcano sauce that everyone is talking about. The noodles were just a tad too under cooked for me(I like them softer) and I don’t know what the volcano sauce is suppose to taste like but I don’t think I tasted anything that resembled anything volcano-like. The ribs were really good though — nice, fatty and really satisfying. Overall, the bowl as a whole was just okay. I’ll probably spend my 15 bucks at one of the other million ramen places in San Mateo.

The infamous ajisen ramen. I had high expectations since it was my first time trying Japanese ramen. The portions are decent, and I left feeling full. However, I could tell that they used a lot of MSG. I ordered the most spicy item on the menu, and to me, it wasn’t as spicy as I expected. Also, I didn’t like how the noodles were made. It felt like spaghetti in ramen soup. Overall, San Mateo is known for its Japanese restaurants especially ramen, and I recommend trying other places rather than Ajisen Ramen. Ajisen is just a mediocre place.

Yummm. I’ve never been one to go out and eat ramen(because it seems like such a simple dish that I could cook at home), but seeing so many ramen shops in downtown San Mateo, I had to give one a try. Ramen Dojo and Ramen Parlor were both out on vacation last night(apparently those two places are always packed, according to Unilocal Reviews), so we came another little ramen shop, Ajisen Ramen. We were seated rather quickly, even though there were so many customers in the restaurant. My mom ordered #1, I ordered #2, and my dad ordered #3. My dish was absolutely amazing. If you come here, you must try the #2 Paiku-Men(Premium Tender Ribs Ramen). It’s flavorful and the ribs are nicely braised and tender. It is very easy to chew, but not to the point that it is mushy. It just has the perfect texture and taste. Even though this dish was so amazing, I could not finish it in one sitting. I had to take out and eat for lunch the next day. It was still as delicious as it was the night before! Comments on the other options: The #1 was a little plain, with just a few pieces of barbecued pork on top and not much else. The #3 is very spicy, according to my dad. Also, even though my dad ordered a large, it did not seem like he got that much more than a small. I would definitely come back to eat the #2 again! If I can resist eating the same thing again, I would love to try the other ramen on the menu.

First off, everyone who works here seems to be Chinese. Nothing wrong with that but my waitress didnt know what nori or roasted seaweed is. The miso ramen is the milky looking broth variety. It tastes okay. But as you can see i had not many noodles and many many sprouts. The noodles them self are awful and next to flavorless.

Came here on Saturday night with the family. Wasn’t our first choice, we drove around for a while and everywhere had a huge crowd. Ajisen Ramen seems to have a more manageable line, which could’ve been a great choice or a really really bad choice. Turns out, not too bad. Very delicious, the noodles could be a little better. The soup was great, the meat was fantastic. I am not sure why the two stars all over the place on the reviews.

Place is clean, server is friendly and the menu makes me hangry. Best thing of all? No queue!!! Ate at ramen dojo and ramen parlour before so can’t wait to start the ramen war. Food came really fast, less than ten minutes. Broth is flavourful and goes well with volcano sauce! A bit too much salt for me? Like that their noodles is the thin kind and there are generous portion of vegetable and meat. Yum. Just stick with the traditional ramen and you will be fine, number 9 Noodles here beats Ramen Dojo Chashu at Ramen Dojo beats Chashu here Ramen Parlour 0

Ajisen Ramen will satiate that ramen craving but in an average kind of way. I intended to go elsewhere with my gf for sake and ramen, but the long waits brought us here. So quite frankly, Ajisen really met my expectations given walk-ins seem to be filtering in from the better venues. The space is quite casual with no real memorable design intent. However, it’s a modern, comfortable, clean atmosphere. Prices are reasonable. Food items are showcased on the menu in large photographs in typical Asian menu fashion. I ordered the chicken kiraage ramen which was decent. Nothing was popping– especially the broth which I usually finish. The chicken morsels were large and delectable though. As for the ramen noodles, they were more like angel hair pasta al dente. Not a bad thing but not quite the appropriate noodle texture associated with ramen. The service was pretty good although void of personality. Yeah, Ajisen probably needs to step up the food quality before I return. The competition is stiff in these«ramen parts».

First time I was here, came at 10:50pm and they said its closed even though the closing time is 11:30pm and there was still a lot of people inside. The guy refused to let me in. So screwed up man Turns out, Unilocal hours are outdated. They actually close at 11pm. They should update it! Went a second time today, and it was ok. The photos on Unilocal of the ramen looks good, but the taste is actually only so-so. I got the spicy pork ramen, which I found out later had 3 small chili peppers on the menu – it was CRAZY spicy. I have never had ramen that was that spicy – it looked like they threw a crazy amount of chilli oil into the soup. They dumped so much spicy oil in there it actually made my stomach churn all night. So beware! Other than the spice, overall the ramen was average. The noodles were thin instead of thick, and weren’t particularly soft or hard – basically feels like stuff you’d buy at an average supermarket. The portions are actually not that big – the bowls look big in the Unilocal photos, but in reality it’s actually quite small. Overall, an average ramen place. There’s usually a crowd because it’s located right in the middle of downtown, but if you’re in the area I’d suggest visiting many of the ramen shops that are literally a block away.
