Anna’s Danish Cookies

Sadly, I have to agree with the many long time customers who are disappointed. My family has chosen Anna’s as the designated annual holiday cookie gift since its original store on Dolores street; 25 years ago.
It is simply not the same; smaller, less buttery & less flavorful.
It is with a heavy heart that our family tradition ends this year.

My family has been in San Francisco since 1850, and Anna’s Danish Cookies were a holiday treat and tradition that my Grandmother would always bring to our Christmas and Easter celebrations. Grandma is long gone now, and Anna’s has unfortunately moved out of the city to the suburbs, but the cookies are as good as ever. I’m now the one who brings them from here to our family Xmas celebration in southern California.
The part chocolate, part plain combination is the very, very best.

A coworker brought in a box of the chocolate cookies and they were awesome so I decided to send some in the mail to my girlfriend as a holiday gift. I realized I made an error in the shipping address a couple days after it shipped. The staff was very understanding and helpful with resolving the issue. They saved my butt big time! Anna’s has recently changed ownership and though they claim the cookies are the same, they are not. The chocolate covered cookies had minimal chocolate covering. This is what used to make Anna’s so good. If chocolate covered cookies are what you’re looking for, you will be disappointed with the new Anna’s.

The most delicious cookies — after oh so many years. I grew up in San Francisco — and my Aunt lived around the corner from Anna’s which was on 18^th between Guerrero and Valencia for many years. They are now in Burlingame and every bit as delicious as ever.
They also donate a lot of cookies to our service men and women!

This is a hard one to write. I grew up enjoying these cookies as a christmas gift to my family every year from my beloved Aunt Bea. As a teenager I worked at at their facility in san francisco, loved their products and adored the owners. When I became an adult and my aunt passed away, I took up the tradition of sending these cookies to my family for Christmas, and the feedback was wonderful, they enjoyed delighting in this traditional san francisco treat! So for almost 30 years now, I have kept this Christmas time tradition going.
They used to have a pound cake that was the best I ever tasted, and my sister would drive to san francisco just for the pound cake, but they discontinued that several years ago, sadly.
So this year, I again dutifully sent the cookies to family near and far, and of course a box for my family at home. I am extremely embarrased that I did so. These are not the traditional cookies we have loved our whole life. They were dry, tasteless crap! When even children call a cookie icky, you know something is not right.
It saddens me to say that this lifelong customer has placed their last Christmastime order for these cookies.
They need to go back to the traditional recipes and not cut corners thinking customers won’t notice.

When you’re given a box of Anna’s cookies from a good friend whose family has been in San Francisco for generations, it means you’re family!
These crispy, rich and buttery cookies are a delight, and especially since I know that my good friend gave them to me with the greatest honor: inviting me in to share something her family has eaten for decades by buying them yearly for my birthday.
These cookies are PERFECT with a cup of tea. In fact, that’s a must! No coffee! Not plain! But, with tea! The tea adds a touch of bitter to the buttery sweet flavor, and balances it out, and then, they melt in your mouth!
If you receive a box of Anna’s from an old school San Franciscan, instead of rating them against tinned versions in Walgreen’s, know instead that you’re being welcomed into a San Francisco sweet tradition since 1938.

My husband has recommended this place to me several times, but i never went in. he said it’s a great place to pick up gifts for people, especially large groups.
i had to purchase 18 gifts and i didn’t have a lot of time. i was right around the corner from anna’s so i decided to give anna’s a try.
i was in and out within 5 minutes with all of my purchases. the nice lady at the register gave me a sample, the cookies are fantastic. i will definitely be going back.
i wish i had listened to my husband years ago when we first recommended this place.

I hadn’t heard of this bakery until yesterday, but got to try Anna’s cookies for the first time last night. Since it was a sampler pack, I got to try a good amount of different cookie flavors:
–Butter (Shortbread Rolled in Sugar, Baked to a Light Golden Brown): Meh. this cookie was on the bland side and needed more vanilla flavoring. It wasn’t as hard as some shortbreads, nor was it crumbly. Skip.
–Egg (Thin, Distinctively Flavored Oval Cookies Made w/​More Whole Eggs): Pretty good; this was one of my favorites. I liked the egg taste, and the softer texture of this cookie.
–Oatmeal (Light and Delicate, the Extra-​Fine Cut Oatmeal Melts in Your Mouth): My favorite out of all the flavors! I loved the oatmeal in this cookie, and it really did melt in your mouth. However, they were a tiny bit on the stale side, which was disappointing.
–Coconut (Round and Crisp, Made w/​Extra Light Coconut): Meh. I’m not a big coconut cookie fan so I didn’t really like this. This cookie was also super hard.
–Vanilla (Lightly Flavored w/​Vanilla): Also really good! This cookie had a good vanilla taste, but it wasn’t too sweet.
Overall, although I enjoyed some of the flavors, they weren’t so amazing that I would go out of my way to pick them up. On their website, it costs $ 18.50 for a 1lb box of assorted cookies (fancy packaging included), which I don’t think is worth the price. Like some other reviewers have mentioned, the butter cookies in those tin boxes are almost comparable.

I was excited to see this place because I love Danish baking, but wasn’t impressed with the end result. The cookies aren’t much better than you get out of a tin, and they don’t come close to generic sugar or butter cookies you can bake at home. The selection is also limited — they don’t have any other Danish baked goods besides the cookies. I’ll be heading back to Copenhagen for some almond horns.

omg these cookies are sooo yummay! My parents always buy a bunch of anna’s butter cookies for christmas presents. I love their butter cookies. because they’re very light and not overwhelmed with too much butter. I also enjoy their butter cookies dipped in chocolate. YUMM must try these
i believe a box of reg butter cookies is about $ 11-​$ 13. well worth it and makes a great gift!

I frequent Hot Wok Bistro and whenever I go, I always notice Anna’s right across the street. Until recently, I never ventured over to try the cookies. This is probably because I always leave Hot Wok stuffed and happy (ummm…Chinese Chicken Salad and Dry Braised Chicken) and my belly just can’t take anymore. On one of my last visits to Hot Wok, I went for lunch and managed to control myself (handcuffs and jaw wiring not required), leaving just enough room for dessert. I headed over to Anna’s to check it out. The store isn’t anything fancy. There is a simple display with cookies in various tins and boxes and some other gift selections. Since I was feeling suddenly thrifty, I picked up a big white bag of the «seconds.» The bag was large and was only a little over $ 5.00. It came filled with an assortment of cookies including butter cookies (the best by far), egg cookies (okay), coconut cookies (ehh…) and vanilla cookies. I am not sure if it was because they were a day (or maybe a few days) old or if I have just been spoiled with my Grammy’s cookies in the past, but they were just okay. My hubby picked up a bag of some specialty cookies and devoured them.
I’ll continue my near weekly Chinese food binges at Hot Wok, but now that my curiosity about Anna’s has been satisfied, I know to fill up on Chinese food and not bother saving room for cookies.

A co-​worker gifted the office with these oh so yummy cookies this morning. I really enjoy danish cookies around the holidays. These cookies are very delicious. Not too buttery not too sweet.
My favorite was the shortbread with nuts (it tasted like that to me) however the chocolate covered cookies came in second best.
The tins make great gifts, I might have to stop in and pick one up.

The first time I’ve tried these famous danish cookies were in elementary school. They would serve these at the PTA meetings or after assemblys. And I’ve been a fan ever since! They are rich and buttery and OH so tasty! And they are nothing like the cheap danish cookies that come in that blue metal container.
I’m so happy to know they are NOT closed but instead moved to San Mateo (they used to be located in the Mission area).
So go get yourself a box or two or three or more … wonderful as a gift too! Be sure to place your orders early during the holidays!

Based on previous reviews, we were excited about trying Anna’s Cookies. They were okay. We first tried a couple samples — the butter cookies were fine (not too sweet, not overly buttery) and the oatmeal cookie was pretty good. Still, not drop dead delicious as I expected.
We purchased a bag of the peppermint cookies (dipped in chocolate) and a bag of butter cookies with mini chocolate chips. The peppermint cookies were a little unexpected in that they have actual crushed pink peppermint inside.
Mellow cookies… but not wowsers.

I LOVE Anna’s cookies!!! My family gets a 1-​lb box every year during Christmas. We devour those buttery cookies soo quickly!!! The cookies are crispy, thin, and so so delicious! I don’t even want to know how many calories are in these cookies.
Last year, my mom and I went to this place to get a box around Christmas. They sold out of the 1-​lb box :(Go to the store several weeks before Christmas to get some 1-​lb boxes. We ended up getting a 2-​lb box and some small baggies with Anna’s stickers on them so we could give the cookies as gifts.

Dude, they are NOT closed (thank God!)…they just moved to San Mateo (yippee, closer to my hood!).
Anna’s cookies are the bombs! If you haven’t tried, you must… really! I’m not a cookie fan but I cannot stop eating these tasty little devils! My favorites are the butter and the vanilla — man, so buttery and tasty and just melts in your mouth! Drool… perfect to go with your morning coffee or afternoon tea or cold milk or just by itself.
Ok, if you think it’s too expensive then buy their «imperfect» ones. They have an assortment in little cellophane bags in 2 different sizes — 1 for $ 3 and the other for $ 4? These are absolute steals! We try to load up because everyone who comes to our house just love them!
Oh, the lady behind the counter is always very pleasant and ready to give you a free cookie. They also have a great selection of cookie jars and miniature tea sets — perfect gifts for the little lady who likes to play «tea», adorable!

A Mission district fixture since 1938, this bakery has relocated out of the city, taking with it all the buttery goodness for which it’s famous. These cookies are worth the schlep to San Mateo, they’re that addictively delicious.
