This is definitely one of those places that doesn’t look the best on the outside, but it’s not the looks that count. The food here is amazing, the flavors are spot on, and the quantity is unbeatable for the price. I have to say this is the best Mexican spot in San Mateo for a burrito, I haven’t branched out to their other offerings because the burrito is such a spectacular item. I have been here once a week since I moved to San Mateo from the city, and this is a better spot than any traditional Mexican food spot I’ve had there. The burrito rivals Señor Sisig as best burrito IMO.

very authentic, friendly workers and they really seem to get along with each other which is great, I had the filet platter and my friend had the Mexican sandwich, they were both really good. We’re both cooks too so we really know what excellent food is.
They eat there own food here too which tells you they trust there own food which is good.
I saw one of the workers kids eating the food too.
Man his food looked really good too.

It has been over 30 years since I found this place. For me, the tacos al pastor are the best in the Bay Area.
I’m from el DF and I’m used to eat only the best of the best. Las Paloma’s remains the same over all those years and the enjoyment is still there.

I was driving around downtown San Mateo on a rainy Sunday looking for a place to get a little lunch. At first I stopped at Pancho Villa Taqueria, but it seemed a tad overpriced to me – 3 bucks for a taco? So I drove on until I came to Las Palomas Taqueria – 2 bucks each, a little more sensible. I ordered three – carne asada, pastor, and lengua. Leh-​me-​tell-​ya, if I’ve had better tacos than these, I can’t remember where or when. Outstanding!!! I especially enjoyed the lengua taco. The tortillas were absolutely bursting with meat.

Came here on a weds around 4 and ordered a carne asada and pastor taco with extra onions and cilantro .
I was surprised Both of them tasted pretty fresh and moist even after put back on the grill .
I would be back to try the burritos :)

My grandpa would always always get their fish tostada, damn near 4 times a week! And the reason is clear as day. Las Palomas has the best fish I’ve ever tried at any taqueria. It’s marinated and then panfried or broiled, unlike others who deep fry or grill which has always been too dry for me. My go to is a fish super burrito and black beans.
It takes a bit longer to prepare so I recommend calling your order in and saving yourself time and also preventing any backups in the kitchen.

I think they changed ownership and the food is jut not the same.

Excellent food. They grill your meat in front of you, ask you and interact professionally about your food, and are generally super nice and friendly and willing to field any questions you have. We keep coming back, and they’re always awesome!!!

I really like coming here ever since I was a kid. This place is definitely on my top 5 taquerias. Their food is so delicious. The carne asada has a unique taste to it, but then again all their meats are tasty. I mainly come by for the burritos. Besides the fact that the food’s great, so are the prices. Pretty hard finding a place like this one. Cheers!

I think your experience here varies with what you order.
I’ve had things I’ve loved here. And things I really did not like.
What I do not like:
Carne Asada. The meat has connective tissue and is tough and fairly flavorless.
Pollo Asada. Dry and fairly flavorless.
What I was neutral about: Carnitas.
What I like:
Chile Colorado
Chile Verde
LENGUA (best thing here)
Shrimp
I always get tacos. Regular tacos with just onion cilantro some green salsa and lime. Don’t need anything else if the meat is good.
The place is relatively clean. Not sparkling. They could do some extra scrubbing. The service is efficient but not friendly.
I don’t really expect more from a Taqueria.
Oh and their flan is quite yummy.

Currently my favorite Mexican spot. Their tacos are sooooo good. The carne asada is amazing as well as the chicken. The owner is very nice and for $ 2 a taco you get a good amount of meat.

It’s hard to impress me with Mexican food. Most is good or even great but not «get up and write a review while you’re eating it» amazing.
I don’t think I can go to Pancho Villa or La Cumbre again after finding Las Palomas.
Legit, best real hand made mexican food in San Mateo hands down.
Fresh and made to order, all the flavors.
Could be spicier but add your own hot sauce or salsa and you’re in flavortown, Jack. Olé!
Now if will you excuse me, my burrito is getting cold.

You’re a bit of a walk for us (and on a hot day, it’s miserable to dine in), but you are most definitely worth it.
SERVICE.
Not super personable, but hey, what do you expect?
THE RESTAURANT.
Ultra casual, torn cushions are fixed with 49ers duct-​tape, not the most frilliest atmosphere, but you’re coming here for the food!
THE TACOS.
Some of my favorite in San Mateo, seriously. The meat is tender, the tortillas are thin and piled high, and they’re still quite filling. You’re going to want to add hot sauce/​salsa, but definitely some good stuff.
We’ll be back!

My faith in San Mateo Mexican food has been shattered.
The food was bad like I should of gone to Taco Smell instead bad.
Salsa is sitting old and untouched on table the al pastor half burned with some spice. The guacamole is mostly sour cream and the ingredients are old.
The location is flooded with blinding sunlight during dinner time, any sensible owner would get blackout shades for basic human comfort.
Worst part is I overheard the girls talking about my Asian friend in Spanish using the typical racial epithets. By the by Spanish is not some secret language a few people know, PEOPLE LEARN THIS IN SCHOOL!

Unilocal never fails! 5 stars for this Taqueria? All the way!
My quesadilla was spot on (flavorful, not overcooked), my fish tacos well presented, lightly seasoned, and tasty, and my Pacifica, well, you can’t go wrong with that. I paid about $ 13 all together which seems reasonable. Food is freshly prepared in front of you and brought to the table. Definitely one of the best Mexican places I’ve tried in the Bay Area so far!
Oh, and I love the salsa they have on the table. Especially the red chili one… works on really every dish.
I’ll be back to make my way through the menu. Gooood stuff.
