I am so thankful for Mario’s Bön Décor. A dog seriously damaged a cushion on my couch, and Ethan Allen said they no longer made the leather so I couldn’t get a new one. I thought it was hopeless, but they recommended I reach out to Mario to see if he could do it. And he did! A complete transformation from rubbish to exactly has it had been before the dog. I’m so impressed. And he did it in just 2 days too, so remarkable!

I spent well over a month looking for a good upholstery place. Being in the trades myself I am pretty picky when it comes to workmanship and competence. After visiting half a dozen upholsters in the San Francisco Bay Area and browsing Unilocal online I found one I liked. Mario replied to my email within hours after my first inquiry and assisted with the ordering process. He promised to have my couch and both armchairs ready within 30 days, which was significantly faster than most of the others. As promised, my couch and armchairs were ready and the quality of work exceeded my expectations. He really is an expert upholsterer who is top notch in every way including customer service. If you decide to use Mario’s Bön Décor you won’t be disappointed!

I am so thankful to Unilocal for turning me onto Mario and Kerrie. When we purchased our home, I finally had the space for my grandmother’s 1950s serpentine couch. It was in horrible shape though. I called Mario and he told me to send him photos of the sofa. Easy enough. Kerrie called and invited me to pick fabric. She let me take a couple books home.
My husband and I were all over the place trying to decide, so we went back in. We needed to make sure the fabric would hold up to our three cats’ claws, so my husband got the idea to scrape at the samples with an open paper clip. Kerrie was totally cool with our experiment! It worked, we found the perfect fabric!
Mario took exactly as long as he said he would. There was a slight mistake with the wrap around cushions (this a very unique piece), but Mario made it right very quickly! The couch is absolutely beautiful. Even my very particular great-​Aunt who helped pick it out all those years ago thinks it looks wonderful!
Seriously, Mario is very gifted. Kerrie is a great person to work with. You won’t be disappointed going with them.
I am saving up to have my childhood sectional redone by them. I know they will do an amazing job!

Mario really is as good as it gets His skill and mastery at his craft continue to impress and inspire. Plus now with the new showroom and Carrie, it’s fun to go in and brainstorm design solutions. I have a couch that needs to be totally kid proofed and dog proofed and we found recycled leather of all things. Really cool. Next we hit the dining room. We are stripping the ugly brown stain off the chairs and we found a gorgeous natural redwood underneath. Then we did custom covers for the seats. I have been working with Mario for years now. What a pleasure it is.

MARIO REPAIRED MY SNOWBOARD BOOTS!
Seriously! One of my snowboard boots (I own an older version of the K2 Ryker Boots) got pretty mangled the other weekend when I went up to Tahoe. I was first recommended to a shoe repair store but the shops I went to said I should try an upholstery shop because they have machines that can thread the material.
Mario found a way to sew the ripped area of my boot no problem. The attention to detail was even more impressive. I doubt he has ever been asked to fix a snowboard boot before but he fixed it up as if he has been doing them his whole life.
This strategy worked out so much more for me financially. I paid $ 30 for the repair rather than having to spend $ 150+ on a new pair of boots.

I did not have a good experience, even though, Mario did eventually correct the problem and leave me with a satisfactory product.
I was referred to Mario, so brought him my needs trustingly. I had a child’s couch to recover and two weeks later brought a back cushion to an antique bench. Each time, Carrie, his secretary told me a couple of weeks. 4 weeks later, I called to see the status of my orders and was told it would be a couple more weeks. This concerned me because I really needed the bench back sooner than later. I felt put off by them as she told me they were really busy and no one could do my jobs except Mario and he is only one man. Were they putting other orders ahead of mine? I did not feel good about this, so I went to a friend in the business and she came with me to get my deposits back as I decided at that point to take my business elsewhere. When we arrived that following Monday, Mario showed me that he was in the process of completing my cushion, and that I could pick it up that following Friday. When I came to get it, I paid in full and took it home. To my dismay, it did not fit by more than 2 inches to large. So, I took it back and asked for a return of the check I just left them, to be paid in full when they did the cushion to the correct measurement. Carrie would not return my check. She said it was already stamped received, which I did not feel good about. So, I asked her then to not cash it until I had a satisfactory product. I asked Mario to compare the cushion he made with the original I left with him, and he had already thrown the original away. So, he came to my house to measure the space and then remade the cushion to fit.
I now have the cushion I needed, but want to warn others to be careful when doing business with this company. Get clear dates on when your order will be complete and do not pay in full until you are sure you have a satisfactory product.

Yes, he is that good. I had some inferior work done at another place and he was able to redo it. He did a fabulous job.
I also had a few throw pillows made and they too are beautiful.

After being told by many that I should buy a new chair rather than get a slip cover made for my new/​consignment shop chair — I landed at Mario’s Bön Décor (based on Unilocal reviews). Mario’s quote was significantly less than the five other upholsterers’ quotes. The work I looked at in the shop was quality work so I decided to go for it. Kerry helped me decide on a fabric. She had limitless patience for my indecisiveness. I brought home many, many fabric books. Kerry looked with me, listened to my likes and dislikes and steered in the right direction without pushing any agenda. I just picked up my slip cover today and I am more than satisfied. It’s exactly the look I was going for and it fits perfectly.

Mario’s is exactly the type of business I rely on Unilocal to help me find. Excellent small business with a wonderful work ethic and great customer service.
I bought an inexpensive bench from
and some custom fabric thinking I could DIY it. Well… I am in the middle of it and realize– I am not skilled enough to make this work with a very unforgiving striped fabric. BUT I needed the bench finished for Saturday and it was Wednesday night. What to do? I pulled up the Unilocal reviews and at midnight emailed Mario’s. When I woke up in the morning a message to «bring the bench» was waiting for me. So on my lunch break I ran over there. They were very friendly, quick to give me a quote, and ask me what I wanted, then made a couple of good recommendations themselves. That was yesterday. What did I do for lunch today? Picked up the bench. It’s perfect and they even went above and beyond and finished the UNDERSIDE of the bench for me, which I hadn’t even thought I could ask for given the rush timeline.
Couldn’t ask for more. Will be bringing by other projects.
Just as a foot note. They did just move to a new location down the street from their old so it’s a bit chaotic in there, which they apologized for.

Mario is a master craftsman. I was referred to Mario through a friend who had used Mario for several projects. Mario was able to make a custom couch to match our antique Persian rug. Mario used gorgeous materials that matched perfectly. His crew was able to install the couch in our house. From the lining, to the seams, to the construction, the couch was absolutely beautiful. We had spoken to several upholstery companies before deciding on Mario’s, but we were sure glad that we found Mario.

Mario’s Bön Décor is absolutely fabulous and we will be going to Mario for all of our re-​upholstering needs from hereon! My dear friend Stacy who owns Dream in San Mateo highly recommended Mario when I was searching for a great upholsterer. We needed our dining room chairs redone as well as a bedroom chair. I wanted to use some fabulous black and white cowhides… not necessarily an easy task — to capture the perfect look but also to use this unique material and properly re-​upholster. Beth G. hit the nail on the head — Mario is a magnificent craftsman and a fabulous human being. He’s got a great sense of humor and perhaps even more importantly, a «Can Do» spirit! No challenge is beyond him. I took the chairs and cowhides in 2 weeks ago and voila! they are all done, look GORGEOUS and we are thrilled with our «new» chairs. When you meet Mario, you will get the instant feeling that this man knows what he is doing and he will do great work for you. So after our first meeting, I asked him if he could also create a few pillows for us. Good as done. They were delivered with the chairs today and also are fabulous. You will receive wonderful customer service from Mario and his associate, Carrie who often will return your phone calls and answer your emails. Cannot recommend Mario enough… in fact we just placed another order with him. :-)

I had two couch cushions that were in bad repair and did a great job returning them to like new condition. As the damage to the cushions was significant, I was expecting to see evidence of repair. Mario came up with a very creative solution that made his repairs totally invisible. It’s clear he’s done this before! Considering he essentially had to rebuild the cushion, I found his price to be reasonable and appropriate.
His shop is in an semi-​industrial area of town just off El Camino. His store-​front is serviceable, but not high-​end. I guess that’s one way he manages to keep his prices reasonable.

Mario does a fantastic job in all the furniture he as repaired and upholstered. He has great eye for detail and makes recommendationsthat will go well with the shape, weight of the furniture. In the pages of Facebook, 3 chairs I have purchased and/​or reupholstered appear there. He takes his time wth the customer, making you feel that you don’t have to rush… he works with you and your budget. His work is very, very good. He works with many local designers… that is how I found him. He is one of the few craftspeople in his field. You can trust the work and you will be happy wit the results.

Just used Mario’s Bön Décor for a repair to the arm of my couch. After getting an estimate from another furniture repair place and then being told that it would be too hard to fix, Mario came out to take a look and gave me an estimate for half the price the other guy was going to charge. He is obviously very experienced and knowledgable. He took just the arm of the couch back to his shop and had it repaired and returned in 24 hours. I would absolutely recommend Mario’s Bön Décor for any furniture or upholstery repair. They were very courteous, well priced and quick to complete the job.

I recently purchased two vintage wooden frame chairs which needed the bottom and back cushions recreated.
I visited some obvious choices in Burlingame and San Mateo but wasn’t until a co-​worker recommended Mario’s Bön Décor in San Mateo.
Located on Palm Ave in San Mateo — near the guy who positions his graphic antiabortion truck near the Planned Parenthood — don’t let the informal and clutter filled look scare you away. Further, Mario’s quote for how many yards of fabric and fee for service didn’t involve any measuring or even touching my old cushions!
I supplied my own fabric and picked up the cushions last night. They are unbelievable — and I am a picky gay guy! Without requesting, he took the time to line up the pattern between the back and bottom cushions, selected the perfect color zipper — we are so pleased!
His fee is very low — but his work is wonderful.
Stop in and give him a chance. The employees are very casual and informal — but don’t let that fool you!
