It’s good to have this place in downtown San Mateo as it’s open till 2 am and seats are available most times. The biggest drawback is that the bartenders don’t seem to be very knowledgeable and can make only very basic cocktails. It’s cheap, and they accept cash only.

Clean local watering hole. Cheap drinks. Sports. Pool. Locals in an ever changing San Mateo downtown with more sushi and boba. Please never disappear McGovern’s. These streets that I walked as a child need some continuity to them
I mean come on, free pool and free sports. I suppose the cash only bit is a nuisance but an ATM in the corner with a $ 2.50 fee if you must.
All the standard drinks you could want. Beers. Spirits. Whatever you need.
Great seats, stools, and booths. I suppose the bathroom could be a bit newer and maybe have a bidet on the toilets, but that’s going too far isn’t it.
Oh, no food, but grab something nearby. The food options are endless here in a two block radius and it includes more than just Japanese.

Not overly crowded. Great selection of spirits for a fair cost. Juke box has a broad variety of music and people are friendly. Theres a Rock-​ish band on Saturday nights which is pretty good and adds a little flair to the place.

Perfect dive bar — to a point.
The Perfect Dive Bar has a great juke box, lots of different beer and spirits — but most importantly a pleasant bartender. Two out of three ain’t bad — but was ridiculous. Rude, inattentive and rude — did I mention rude?
One bit of advice, if you don’t like your job — quit; don’t take it out on the customers.

My favorite Irish bar on the peninsula! The owners are wonderful and the atmosphere great. We’ve been going this bar for over 2 decades and it’s still great! Highly recommend it!

Still a really chill place to be.
Its gotten a lot cleaner then it used to be in fact last time it looked spotless.
I kinda liked the peanuts all over the floor appeal tho.
If you wanna charge your phone they have a huge big stage area with tons of outlets.
The pool is still free too, yay
Theres still tons of great beers to choose from.
They have a lot of comfortable seats and stools.
Man the booths are hella cozy, I saw a guy taking a nap in one of them last time I was there and I don’t blame him at all.
Those seats are so cozy I’ve felt like napping in them myself.
They don’t serve food here its just a great low key good ol’pub located downtown, the location is great and the personalities an service are great as well.

When my friends started hanging out here I thought that they were crazy. Now it’s my absolute favorite bar.
I love the environment, I’ve been there for NYE, Halloween, personal celebrations, and many long nights in between. The drinks are good and reasonably priced, the staff is kind and relaxed, the booths are clean and there is usually live music or karaōke. The owner is kind and lots of fun, walking around chatting and collecting glasses.
I feel safe there because it is never terribly busy and the crowd there is nice. The bathrooms are reasonably clean and it’s generally an all around good time.

I love going to bars where you learn all the bartenders names, and all the staff recognize you or have your drink ready by the time you sit down. It may be a dive bar, with dim lights, old furniture, and cheap booze, but the people are great and it’s a good place to hang out. Cash only but there’s an atm in the corner

McGov’s! The place where you run into people you havent seen in years! Especially on the holidays.
Cash Only if I remember correctly and there are booths to chill with friends and tables in the middle as well, but dont sit there because there are usually too many people on the weekends.
Grab some pizza man down the street and bring it back, no problems.
Typical Downtown SM bar and it has its quiet nights sure but some weekends and around the holidays this place is packed.

Remembers me of a bar you’d find on a college campus which makes for a fun night of drinking dancing or just hanging out with the gang. Hard to get a place to sit but it’s all good plus the bar can get extremely crowd at once! Fair warning cash only so no cards please

I find this dive bar really chill. On the weekends they usually have a dj or a band playing.
My only issue is how early they close. Especially over the weekend. Last call at 1 n lights on at 130. But i guess thats the norm in dt san mateo.

McGovern’s is alright. Definitely not the best but it could certainly be worse. If you haven’t been here before, it can be hard to find. My friend drove past it a couple times thinking it was part of the restaurant next door.
It’s cash only, which isn’t that bad since the drinks are cheap. The peanut shells on the floor are a bit strange at first but you kinda get used to them.
If you are from the peninsula, on any given night you are pretty much guaranteed to run into someone you went to school with.

This bar is a good size and has 2 entrances. The only reason why I give this place 3 stars because I’m from San Mateo and this place is just a middle school/​high school reunion every time you go in here. The bar is always packed. It’s always overcrowded.
I would at least suggest this place needs to add some music on some nights. Maybe some local bands?

I mean really, you have to go in here knowing it’s a real dive bar. No fancy décor or specialty cocktails. And if you have that in mind, then you’ll enjoy yourself!
It’s a very spacious bar with a lot of seating. The drinks are cheap and really that’s all you need to know.
They do have a pool table and a dart board, but I’ve never seen anyone playing (keep in mind I’ve only been there twice).
OH! They do have a rule, though. If you are at the bar, take a look at what is hanging on the wall. «No Tank Tops (men)» haha… follow that rule and you’re good to go!

Cheap beer. Standard selection. Extremely spacious. Decent Irish pub.
Came here for the free pool (Friday nights I guess?). They could really redo the felt on the table though. Not to mention fix the overhead light, unless playing in darkness is your thing. Also, it was nice to see the entire bar come together and cheer on the Warriors as they squeaked by the upstart Nuggets. Stephen Curry is way too sick.

My friends and I came here on a Thursday night and it was fairly crowded but we were still able to get a booth. Beers were $ 4.50 which is pretty cheap. The crowd was fairly young probably 21 – 27. The owner came around and cleared our glasses, which was super nice! He was super friendly and told us that running a bar was a hobby of his. He even held the door open for us when we left! So nice! They have a pool table and they have all the sports channels playing. Definitely will be back !
