I write this on my way home to use the toilet. DONOT get the all you can eat. Omg. This was some really terrible sushi. The fish was old and everything had mayo and an overwhelming amount of rice and random garbage toppings thrown on top of the rolls. The fish seemed like it was catfood or worse. It was discolored and warm as if it was sitting out. The scallop tasted super fishy and slimy. The roe was super salty. The miso soup tasted like soap and they originally gave us salad with no dressing! Our waitress didn’t know the menu at all when we were asking questions. The table next to us ordered some bento boxes that looked good though. Looks like they specialize in fried stuff. Either way I would not go back.

Out of all the sushi places in San Mateo, this would be the last that one that I come to. Sorry, but it’s true. I left feeling oddly dissatisfied and disappointed. It wasn’t horrible and it was edible, but it wasn’t great either. Popcorn shrimp: ehhh, it was fried and it didn’t really taste like shrimp. Inside was a couple of cucumbers and and some sort of sashimi but it was really forgettable because most of it was just rice. Not fresh at all. Something with the baked salmon on top: Again, nothing special and had imitation crab meat in the middle that wasn’t that fresh. I’ll totally pass! Bento box with grilled salmon and karange: It was the«dinner size» since we came on a weekend and came with a measely garnished salad and a puff of rice. Everything was dry and flavorless and the portions were small. To think of it, I’m probably being pretty generous with the stars if my review wasn’t that happy…

Had a lunch with five friends. Great food! Excellent service. Price is reasonable. Highly highly recommended!

What a disappointment. This place is going downhill. The portions have gotten much smaller and the quality of the fish is suspect. The lunch bento has options for 2 or 3 items, then it says you can add 4pc of sashimi for $ 3 extra. So I ordered 2 items and asked for the extra sashimi for $ 3. When I received my bill, I see I was charged for 3 items and the additional sashimi. The waitress says the sashimi option is only available with the 3 item bento so she charged me the larger amount. She never explained that when I ordered. So when I told her she owes me the 3 item then, she just had a weird look on her face. That’s it. I’m not coming back.

3 Stars. I’m here on a Friday, not busy not bad. The price is a little steep for lunch, especially you only get mediocre selection. For $ 21.99, I’d go to Kome Buffet and get better sushi and good Chinese food. Good luck.

A slow all-u-can-eat Japanese sushi place. After 90 mins sitting down, half of our orders have not come. The reason: they are short of hands. This place definitely shot of hands. Tables are dirty, no refill of drinks, long time of serving, hardly can talk to our servers… Maybe it is their tactic that customers do not order too much by being slow in every aspect. I can not rate their food because I am very angry in their serving speed. And, they did not want to honor their promotion offer at first even when I showed them the AD on Unilocal. After 10 mins reasoning, they agreed and brought the price down. I am not recommend this place to anyone.

Presenting the review our waitress at Sushi 85 begged us to write: Wow, I hate this place. Honestly I don’t even know why I came here all 5 times that I did, but no worries, I definitely learned my lesson this time. Originally AC and I wanted to hit up Hotaru for lunch but because of the long wait and hunger pains, we decided to settle for Sushi 85. Allow me to give you a few reasons why you should never settle: First off, 1:30 pm in the afternoon is not dinner time. I don’t know where yall from, but don’t fuck with my eating hours like that. My lunch date and I tried to order from the lunch menu because goodness gracious excuse me, we thought it was lunch time! I guess we’ve been living our lives wrong this whole time because the waitress told us «It’s not lunch time. We only serve dinner now.». Um hey, cool? Second, if you’re going to put a check-in deal on Unilocal, customers are allowed to use the freebie without you being a dick and saying«write a comment about us». We already checked in, which notifies all our Unilocal friends we’re eating at your restaurant, what else do you want from us? But hey, here’s my comment that you forcefully requested. Third, the difference between the sashimi lunch and sashimi dinner is that you get two more pieces for the dinner set. Because it was«dinner time», I obviously had to pay 5 more dollars and I was okay with that. However when my order arrived, I received the lunch set instead. So uh you’re going to make me order from the dinner menu, make me pay more, lecture me on how it’s dinner time at 1pm, AND not give me what I was forced to order. Hey, good job. Four, for what I’m paying and what I’m putting in my mouth, it is not worth it. There are so many better(SUPERBETTER for that matter) alternatives for Japanese food in Downtown San Mateo that Sushi 85 looks like a fool. Peace out.

Ate here yesterday 3÷25÷15 for dinner(special price of $ 25/person until 3÷31÷15 must ask for the 20% discount to get this price otherwise its $ 29)…didn’t expect much as it was an all you can eat place, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was cautious to try this out due to the comments about poor service, but I was really hungry and I can eat a lot so I figured it would be worth it. So between my gf and I, we ordered 7 rolls and 2 hand rolls… i was thinking it would be on the same level as old town sushi down the street, but to my surprise it was actually better. The fish(salmon/unagi/tuna see pic) are decent for what we were paying. Don’t expect top grade here… it’s all you can eat, but def a great value for the price. I can’t remember what rolls we had, but they were all good(not great). The service was also really fast and friendly and the restaurant seemed pretty busy as table after table was being filled. The waitresses were attentive and the food came fairly quickly. Maybe I came on a good night, but I didn’t see what other reviewers were talking about. Overall not a bad place to get your sushi craving fix if you have a big appetite and on a budget. If you get full off of 2 – 3 rolls this place might not be best for you. I basically ate 5 out of the 7 rolls and a hand roll we had so price wise its a win for me. Also nothing tasted«fishy» which was a big plus when it comes to lower grade fish. Again please remember I’m comparing this to similar quality level sushi places so expect ok-good sushi… not great sushi.

Ummm, wow? So, I’ll start with this: We ordered the all-you-can-eat menu. And it was a surreally bad meal, almost two star worthy simply for how amazingly bad it was, but I have to keep it honest… one star is all this horrible little spot deserves. The food was bad, most of which we didn’t even order(they brought us some old fried rolls instead of the nigiri we ordered). The service was slow, so slow that we didn’t care that we didn’t get half of our items and ate the cold, nasty old oily rolls they foisted upon us. They were rude, and didn’t want to take any additional orders after we placed our second 6 piece order.(They said we had to finish the gross rolls we didn’t order first(?!?). It was really kinda funny. Too bad I left $ 45 poorer and feeling grossed out and a bit insulted. Whatever. I’m never coming back…

2 ½ stars. 3 stars for sushi, but 2 stars for service/experience. Sushi was pretty good. Service was ehh/okay. I would prefer not to hear the workers gossiping the entire time(talking crap about another worker who was not in ear shot). Another thing is I think they make the free roll differently than if you pay for it. When the waitress told the chef the rolls I order, she specifically said which one was free. Plus when I ate it something tasted off and turns out he put really old avocado in the free rolls. I’m a little confused about their 2 of their deals. The 20% off your bill and 1 free roll with Unilocal check in. I ordered 4 rolls and asked if I could use the 1 free roll. The waitress said okay, but that I could not use the free roll on 1 of the 4 rolls(something about her boss not being happy about what a previous customer did with that deal). So I had to order an additional roll to get 1 for free. Then right before asking for the bill I asked another waitress about the 20% off promotion. She said it didn’t apply to our bill because we didn’t order«regular» items. But the sign said 20% off all menu items, so I don’t know why I couldn’t get the discount.

By far the best service, quality, and quantity I’ve been to. My typically go to are Mizu bar and grill in San Jose, yuki sushi, and this place simply because of its consistency. We were offered a seat right away, attended to with green teas(even before mentioning I wanted one after seeing my mom get one). Our server just knew! We also received edemame, soup, and salad for three on the house. We ordered the sushi 85 boat and they were very accommodating when we requested to swap a roll due to allergen reasons. While most sushi places will typically have your everyday California roll, 49er roll, dragon roll, etc. One of the main things I look for is the variation of fish used versus fake crab in each speciality roll. This place had a great selection and it’s fair to say they are not taking your money but more so giving you your money’s worth! Absolutely will come back again– thanks for the great food and service!

Wow. I have to say that I’m pleasantly surprised by this place. First of all, there are three menu items where you get your food on a boat. My sushi was on a boat! Me and my sister got the Deluxe Combo which was a helfy $ 50, but luckily we caught them during their 30% off everything grand opening special(I know, late review). The Deluxe Combo came with soup and salad for 2 and half sushi and half sashimi. The sushi looked kind of small and lame, but to my surprise, the were actually really good. The rice was nice and sticky(not dry) and the fish was fresh. Which bring me to the sashimi which was also fresh. There was a really good variety of sashimi and it was perfect for 2(maaaaybe 3) people. Overall, this place was pretty good. It wasn’t the best I’ve had and to be honest, I don’t know if I would go back without the 30% since the boat is a bit pricey for my taste(even though there is sashimi on it), but it’s a good place to get some sushi and sashimi on a cool boat.

I went here when it was still Kitcho. I hoped the new name meant an improved menu. Somehow the sushi selection became even more bland, even flavorless. My tamago was lacking flavor. The soy sauce tasted like it was sitting in its bottle for a few days. It’s clear there are more kid friendly options(teriyaki sushi ialways a hit with my niece), but the fish didn’t look great and the sushi rolls weren’t consistently sized. The fruit flies that decided to buzz around me didn’t relieve me. Despite having three waitresses and being one of two occupied tables we weren’t serviced quickly.

We did the $ 50 special boat, but ended up getting the incorrect boat. It was all weird fish that wasn’t explained but still, pretty good! Our server was very new and you could tell but the other staff was very happy to help. Tea was yummy and the atmosphere was nice. Parking is horrible as it is DTSM, so many other sushi places I’ll go to before heading back here.

After a bad experience at Kitcho, we decided to try Sushi 85, which looks to be a chain where the other buffet location is in Mountain View. It was also the grand opening and the entire menu was 30% off. While I read other Unilocal reviews after visiting, I would like to say that most of the prior complaints were around the service. However, during our visit, service seemed to be fine — quick to order, refills of tea and water so I think they ironed that aspect out after opening. Food was pretty standard — fish quality was food, not great. We had the rainbow roll sushi and the sea bass dinner. The rainbow roll was a decent size(average pricing of about $ 11). The sea bass dinner which came with three pieces of fish along with rice, salad, and miso soup was delicious. While the presentation was OK, the fish was quite tasty, but more expensive than other dishes($ 17). While a decent sushi shop, for the price, I’m not sure if I’ll return given the many other Japanese restaurants in the area. However, I would like to try their other hot dishes outside of the sushi to give it a fair review in the future.

Honestly, it really wasn’t bad. Sushi 85 is a new place in San Mateo. Adding to a long list of Japanese places already in the area, Sushi 85 has competition if it wants to try to stay open. But honestly, I don’t think they’re gonna have a problem. Parking is all on the streets in downtown San Mateo and metered till 6pm. Now, the inside of this restaurant is actually pretty big. There’s tables right as you step in and then there’s tables further inside as well so this place can hold a large amount of people. The sushi bar itself can hold about 7 – 8 people if you prefer to sit there. The menu is pretty vast as there’s lunch menus and dinner menus and different sushi options all rolled up into one large menu book. Be sure to note that lunch specials are only from M-F and ends at 3pm. Service here is pretty good. Out of the 3 times I’ve came here, I have not received horrible service. The waitresses are attentive to our needs and always willing to give a refill on water or tea. I’ve gotten their dragon roll combo a lot(comes with soup and salad) and it’s always enough to keep me full for the new few hours. The rolls are pretty average, but they also have some here that I’ve never heard of before(Spider-Man roll? Batman roll? Sex on a Mountain roll?!) Seriously. Check out their extensive list of sushi. Overall, probably come back. Prices are a tad expensive compared to Old Town Sushi(on some items.), but they do keep lollipops by the door. Mm. Candy.

YES! So it seems the way to a 5-star review from me is either amazing bubble tea or great deep-fried sushi. Sushi 85 delivers on the latter in so many amazing ways. They have a wide selection of regular, baked, and deep-fried rolls; some are okay, some are wonderful, and some take me to paradise! Here is my roll-by-roll breakdown: * Crazy Roll — Deep fried California roll — 4⁄5 — Simple, but great * Texas Roll — Salmon, avocado, cream cheese(deep fried) — 5⁄5 — PARADISE! * Bat Man — Unagi, cream cheese, crab, chef’s sauce(deep fried) — 5⁄5 — SOCREAMY! * Cowboy Roll — Salmon, cream cheese, salmon and avocado on top — 4⁄5 — Good, but not amazing * Popcorn Shrimp Roll — Ebi, cucumber, popcorn shrimp on top — 2⁄5 — Popcorn shrimp is good, but the roll under is disappointing More updates to come as I explore more of the menu!

I have to say, I’m somewhat conflicted about this place. While the sushi was pretty good, the service left a bit to be desired. So here’s what happened… I came in at lunchtime with my manager and we decided to split a few rolls. We ordered a roll off their menu that included unagi, crab, and avocado. When the roll came out it had only red snapper and avocado. Clearly not the same item as on the menu. When I mentioned this to the server, she said that it was a mistake with the menu, yet she didn’t mention this when we ordered and they hadn’t edited the menu in any way. Rather than return the roll and get us the one we ordered, she said she’d tell her manager about it. Ten minutes later no one had come by and we didn’t know what to do about the situation(I should also note that I really wanted unagi…). Honestly, the other rolls that we ordered were quite good. And at 30% off the price was right, but I was still rubbed the wrong way about the initial error. The roll was still on the bill even though it wasn’t what we wanted and no one came to clarify the issue with us. I’m not saying the customer is always right, but if your menu blatantly says something then shouldn’t that be what you receive? There are plenty of other sushi places in the area, I probably won’t go out of my way to return to Sushi 85.

This place has some mixed reviews, but I really love it and would recommend anyone to give it a try. Yes, it’s new and there are only three waiters(I think?) but the service seemed completely fine to me. I was pretty impressed with the creative plating and the food was amazing. I’ve gotten plenty of Dragon Rolls at many different Sushi places, because I’m a huge fan of Unagi, and the ones here were probably the best I’ve ever tried. I’m not a good critic, but I think I know good food when I taste it. I don’t even rate restaurants that often, but I loved this so much I had to come on her and give this place 5 stars. The Popcorn Shrimp Roll was pretty amazing as well. The shrimp had the flavor of the shrimp in Honey Walnut Shrimp(Chinese dish), which I love. We also got the Deluxe Sushi and Sashimi combo. This took a while to come 20 minutes(?) but the Guys makes everything in front of you so it was pretty cool. Unfortunately, didn’t eat much of this because I was so full. But they had a huge variety of sashimi(more than other places I’ve been to) and everything tasted pretty fresh.

Overall: 5⁄5 Food: 4.5÷5 Service: 5⁄5 Décor: Good ambiance and clean Price: Good Food: Popcorn shrimp roll — Crispy shrimp on top of cucumber rolls, shrimp was a bit underseasoned but the roll was great with the sauce. Crispy spider — the tempura sushi roll was light and crunchy on the outside and inside was filled with good amount of soft shell crab and the usual california roll fillings Lion king roll — basically a california roll with salmon on top, it was moist and the sauce went great together The rolls were very good overall, they were a good size, nice plating, taste better then the competition around San Mateo. There was also a lot of choices, the menu had a good few pages and sushi roll menu was very long. My only complaints are underseason shrimp and two of the rolls were a bit loose and some of the content fell. Service: Food came out fast. All the servers were friendly and very attentive, they brought us tea and water and they were filled constantly. My friend and I came on a Sat afternoon for lunch, there weren’t a lot of other guests around. Décor: The restaurant was clean and had a nice ambiance. Price: Each roll were about $ 10 or less each, and they were a good size. My friend and I ordered 3 rolls and it was just the right amount of food . Overall, I would definitely come back again, this place reminds me of how Joy sushi and Old Town sushi used to be before they got popular let their quality slip and raised their prices. Sushi here are fresh, good portion, taste good, and it would be my go-to place for sushi.
