I have gone to David James Salon three times, and every time I have been so impressed not only by my haircut, but by how kind, genuine, and disarming both Jessica and David are. They are not only insanely talented but also incredibly kind. I recommend them to all of my friends. Great hair salon.

As a dude that doesn’t really understand the value of a higher end haircut, I usually get my cut at the local Vietnamese place on the Peninsula where I roughly pay $ 20 with tip.
David James salon was recommended to me by someone on Instagram. I made my appointment 3 weeks in advance. When I arrived today Jessica greeted me and guided me through the process of getting a more curated, stylistic cut.
I’ve gotta say that she was awesome and I’m thoroughly impressed. I intend to make the shlep again to see her in the spring. Thank you Jessica for a fantastic haircut and for being so great about teaching this dude about hair and how to take care of it.

Just had my first cut today at DJ San Rafael. I was able to get an appointment within 48 hours and Jessica did a wonderful job. She took the time to listen to what I wanted and explained her approach in detail. She was not rushed and paid a lot of attention to detail which I appreciated given my thick hair. She’s a pleasure to talk to and knows what she’s doing. Looks like I will be a new regular! Walkable from downtown with ample street and nearby lot parking.

I had my first appointment for a color and cut at David James a couple of weeks ago with Jessica. It had been a number of years since I’d changed salons so it felt good to be warmly welcomed by both Jessica and the salon owner David.
Jessica nailed the color in a way I’d not experienced before! She discussed with me a strategy for the roots and blending to the rest of the hair which was a conversation I’d never had before with a stylist. The results are that I now have color that works well for my hair down as well as when my hair is up. This makes me feel better when my hair is pulled back during the frequent workout sessions that I do,
The cut was great, too. My hair now falls nicely into a style that doesn’t require hair spray to hold it.
Besides the great color and cut, Jessica shared some valuable tips that I am putting into practice on how to give my hair a more healthy life. I’ll be back!

Wonderful Salon for the whole family! Both my husband and I go to this salon to see Dave and Jessica. Sometimes I even sneak my little one in for a quick hair cut. Both Dave and Jess listen to exactly what we want, and give us that and better. I have short hair, and anyone with short hair knows that every cut is different. But Jess nails it every time. She is so good with the pixie cuts, whether you are looking for a change, or just need a trim. They are quick, efficient, on time, and so reasonable for a salon in Marin. Jessica is worth the drive from Redwood City, even during rush hour! I also followed her from her last salon and I wouldn’t go to anyone else now that I’ve found her. She’s so wonderful at asking all the right questions to get me (who knows very little about how to communicate what I want) a haircut that makes me look great and fits my style! She’s done drastic short asymmetrical cuts, trims, color and all that is in between for me and I’ve never been disappointed. She’s also just a delight to be around (which is helpful when you’re sitting there for your color to set). Her new salon, David James, is really nice, open, clean and relaxing. Davids humor was also much appreciated. Makes me want to get my hair cut more often than I need. Thanks Jessica!

I followed Jessica from her previous salon on the peninsula because she is so talented at what she does. She cares deeply about her work and it shows. She recently took a good 8 inches off my hair and gave me a killer balayage for a whole new look. David James salon is excellent – gorgeous décor, natural and unique hair products and an all over chilled out vibe that makes it a joy to visit. If you need color, a total hair transformation or just a good solid trim, Jessica is your girl!

Love these guys. They were all booked up when I needed a last minute appointment so they asked me some questions about what I needed and then referred me to the perfect stylist at another shop. They even offered to call if they had a cancellation. Thanks!!!

I’m in the commercial arts and so I know when I see a creative person who combines talent with a sense of ownership. David takes pride in his work. He gets a sense of the person and persona and then recommends a direction — given what they have to work with. That takes insight, a keen sense of observation, and a level of depth that you don’t see very often in that field.
I don’t have much to work with, but I’m confident that nobody can do as good a job with it as David does. Always fun to talk to him, too.
I should probably also mention that he cuts my kids’ hair too and always does a stellar job on those guys too.

I have been going to David James for the last year and have consistently been extremely happy with the service. I have had my hair done by three different staff members throughout the year and each of them are very talented. The staff always friendly, outgoing and never pushy or pretentious. The value for the level of service is outstanding and I have never even considering going elsewhere.

Always awesome! I’m super particular when it comes to haircuts and David has always been spot on. It’s such a relief to walk in to a salon and trust that the person cutting your hair knows exactly what they’re doing and will give you exactly what you want every time. Very talented, professional with great people skills.

I just moved to the area just shy of a year ago and kept putting off getting a haircut. I kept searching Unilocal for the perfect place to go. I didn’t want the usual overpriced pretentious hair salon. That’s when I came across David James. He is SUPERB. He went above and beyond what I ever anticipated and to top it all off he’s a downright great guy. Great conversation, great cut, great price. Couldn’t ask for better service. I just found my new go to place.

David is awesome. Just a great guy and really cares about you want. Always fun, good conversation as well. Very accommodating to your schedule as well. I highly recommend.

Truly and sincerely, the best.

My absolute favorite place, I think the stylists are secretly magicians. Great place not only for a haircut, but to meet great people. Jenny is always a sweetheart, and David (aka the mayor of San Rafael) has to be one of the nicest people I’ve met. As well as lots of other great friendly customers. Very well decorated with lots of great artwork.

Moved to the Bay Area over 6 months ago and I’ve been looking for a good stylist and have had to go back to Miami or Monterey to my old stylists. After finding David James on Unilocal I know I found the right person.
He took my overgrown mane and made my hair look amazing, once again (it’s been a while). With only a few minutes of looking at my hair and asking me what I wanted, he cut exactly the amount i asked him to and made a huge improvement on all the styles I wanted. In not vain, but damn I look good now, thanks to David James.
he’s very convenient since he works out of San Rafael and San Francisco throughout the week. He’s got a super cool studio and is very personable and smart conversations while you get style. And he’s affordable.

I could literally hang out here and chat all day with Jenny and David. Jenny did a fantastic job on my hair. She took the time to figure out what I wanted, and made my hair look even better than imagined. Super friendly place, David is hilarious and he also gives magnificent haircuts. Marin is expensive, yet David James Salon has great prices.

Absolutely perfect haircut. The incredibly personable Jenny listened to what I wanted, sculpted my disaster area into a distinguished older punk’s professional bedhead.
It’s really the listening. I might do some more asking next time. Jenny’s judgement might be far superior to my requests.

My husband has been coming to see David for the last two years and I can honestly say that his hairstyle has never looked better. On our first visit to the shop (hubby requested I go because he wanted my opinion), David showed that he was a great listener and managed to find a cut that was a compromise between my preference (shorter hair) and my husband’s (longer hair). He continues to make my husband’s hair look fabulous after each visit. The shop is nice, clean and stylish. David has his photographs in the shop — they are great and demonstrate just how truly talented he is. Note: I would not hesitate to have David cut my hair, but sharing a stylist with the hubby just feels wrong. Kind of like sharing a toothbrush — you would, if you had no choice… but would prefer not to.
