Dipa Cappelen, DMD

My wife and I had just moved into the area and we were looking for a good dentist. After a lot of research we, thankfully, found Dr Cappelen and her team in San Rafael.
We both needed a lot of extensive work to be carried out including implants, cavities and crowns. We had come to the right place. Dipa is a perfectionist with an eye for detail and a wonderful manner that always puts you at ease.

Dr. Cappelen and her dentistry staff are really nice and accommodating. They took care of me when I needed work on my teeth ASAP. What I didn’t like is how their billing person handled my case and just turned my husband and I off completely. When I received a crown I had a bill and paid for the difference that my insurance didn’t cover. But her billing lady claimed that I reached my max on my insurance and that I owed $ 380. I told her to check again, because I swear there was money left in there, and if there wasn’t any when she checked, to just bill me, since I was coming back anyways for some cleaning. So I called my insurance myself, Cigna, and they said that I did have credit left in my account and that the Cappelen office just had to wait for the check to be mailed to them and if they had questions that the office should just call Cigna; guess they never checked. But a couple weeks later I still received a bill from them. I called the office and asked why I was getting a bill and explained that they should just call my insurance. The lady on the phone gave me complete attitude, tone and all, and said that it’s been a month and they still haven’t received payment from my Insurance. What can I do? I don’t think Cigna would not pay them. I was so close to just paying them the $ 380, but why when I didn’t have to. I’ve never had to deal with anything like this before where my own dentist, doctor, anyone has hassled me over any bill. I’ve never even had to call my own insurance to call to ask about paying anyone. Why did I even have to do this? I was just really irritated and annoyed. So I just told her I’ll check again with my insurance or I’ll just pay them.
I spoke to my husband and he was irritated by what was happening and why should I even deal with this? When it clearly says online on my account that I had enough in my insurance to cover that $ 380, they just had to wait. Are they that desperate for money? So I called back again and just canceled my future appointments and just didn’t want to deal with something like this every time I have a procedure. Maybe my insurance just wasn’t compatible with them and didn’t like them. lol It was really hard to do that, because I like Dr. Cappelen and I think all this hassle was unnecessary.
Someone did call me back after and apologized; and they did check with my insurance and that they were going to get paid. They offered to send my Xrays to who ever my new Dentist was. Which who is great by the way and no hassling with my insurance or billing.

Dr. Cappelen is really wonderful — all four of us in our family are patients and I highly recommend her. Dealing with the office, from making appointments right through having any necessary work done couldn’t be easier. Dr. Cappelen and her assistant are completely professional, but very friendly and every procedure I’ve had done has been painless and perfect! They’re great about sending reminders when appointments are due and work quickly and professionally with insurance companies. Can’t recommend her highly enough!

Dr. Cappelen is awesome. Full disclosure, she’s also my big sister. She was a valedictorian in HS, was in the top 5% at UCLA and at Boston University and not surprisingly she’s also the favorite child in the family :)
Our mom is a pediatrician and has been practicing for 30+ years, I see a lot of her influence while watching my sister work. The office has seen 43 new patients this month which is a huge testament to the quality of work produced in Dr. Burke’s office, their staff is thorough, courteous and very friendly. Make an appointment, just don’t get me bumped from the schedule.

I have been going to the San Rafael location for a few years now, mostly for regular cleanings. It was time (I’m 50) to have some old childhood fillings replaced. Dr. Dipa Cappelen replaced a number of these old fillings plus placed a new crown on one tooth. Over three visits she and her assistant (who is great) did all of the work. They were both conscientious about any discomfort (there wasn’t any) and about making sure the work was done right (it was). Sometimes when you have fillings replaced your bite can feel odd, but each time the anesthetic wore off it was like nothing had changed. Dr. Cappelen really seems to enjoy her work and it shows. Plus she is a genuinely nice person. I cannot recommend her enough.
