This is the première boutique studio in Marin, perhaps in all of the Greater Bay Area given its size. Enrollment is limited to better facilitate a classic ballet training program, designed specifically in line with best practices for fitness, health, and scholarship, especially as ballet begins to demand more of our girls’ time as they move toward level 9. The early development programming is absolutely inclusive, generating important connection between young children and their instructors via stage performances in winter(Nutcracker), spring, and summer. Becky Moore, alumna, serves as the Artistic Coordinator, level 7 – 9 pointe instructor, an accomplished dancer in her own right, and gives clear notes for the girls to process as they work through pointe. My daughter has danced at the studio since she was four years old, nine years now, and has found physical fitness, artistic nuance, confidence, and a mental toughness that can only be found in top athletic program. It was hard work. At level 8, you are dedicating six days a week to ballet. If you ask my daughter, however, she’d tell you that she wouldn’t trade it for anything. Her closeknit group of dancer friends are among her best. Closer than her middle school classmates. For us, the experience has been inspiring, watching our daughter bloom, waiver under the pressure, but never break, growing stronger and more committed with each passing year. If you have questions about the program, contact the parent’s group for more information. We are always happy to provide guidance and support. Miss Lucas enthusiastically develops her program, with Lawrence Ewing providing tireless executive staff support. The Marin Ballet parents provide both financial and volunteer support, carpooling and

Proper ballet for your kids. They will be taught ballet techniques and the discipline of ballet and there is a dress code. Ballet is not about fun in tutus until you’ve paid your dues, doing time in your regular class color code! Want your kids to earn their way into the Nutcracker… this is the place. Wonderful staff and history at this school. My kids have been going for 7 years now. They absolutely LOVE it. They want to see how far they can go. I’m proud they have learned this patience and respect for the art and learning about the importance of stretching and posture.

If you are looking for a place where your child will be treated with respect, dignity and learn to love dance, I wouldn’t go here. My girls ended up hating dance and I’m still having nightmares about our experience there. It seems Marin Ballet walks a fine line between being a community ballet school and a pre-professional training program. Some of the teachers tend towards the latter and use tactics that are, well, not very nice. The less talented students are left behind and in some cases, literally left out. Wish we went to a different dance school or invested the time and money in some other endeavor that would have been more rewarding and enriching.

Marin School of Ballet. More like Marin School of Hard Knocks. I’ve taken dance since I can remember. Ballet was my sport from a very young age. My uniform? Pink leotards, pink tights, pink ballet slippers. From the time I was 5 I was enrolled at Marin Ballet. Destined to be Prima Ballerina. The walls of the school are plastered with photos of the best and brightest students who had gone on and become somebody in the dance world. Being up on that wall was, of course, the ultimate goal. At 7 I appeared in the Nutcracker.(It was a bit part, but nonetheless it was a part). A huge honor. At 10 I was primed to be the next big thing, skinny, long legged and graceful… and then at 11 my boobs started to grow. By 13, I was no longer skinny. Although, I was still relatively long legged and graceful… My teacher pulled me aside one day and asked if this is what I wanted to do with my life. I assured her it was. She said this to me: «I am afraid that you may never achieve what you want. You will begin to lose the roles you want to girls who are more lithe than you. You are so top heavy, I am nervous that once on point you will break your ankle.» My chest was to be my fall from grace. Ballet teachers don’t beat round the old mulberry bush too much. Devastated, I weighed my options(quite literally). But I decided that I didn’t want to be part of a club that wouldn’t have me as a member. At 14 I hung up my toe shoes and traded them for jazz shoes, tap shoes and hip hop sneaks, and discovered my true life’s passion. Rhythm and movement of all and any kind.
