My girlfriend brought me here for the first time, it was really good. I had a soup called Merequetengue… it had beef, cactus, tomatos and beans. I eat half, as it was large… very, very good. The place is small and it’s cash only. The service was a little slow… even though they weren’t real busy at that time… We will be back :)

I ate red chilaquiles. They were good, I didn’t leave anything on the plate. I do appreciate that their chips are fresh and home made with great flavor. The only thing that it would make my experience better was that I asked for my egg sunny side up and it was little over cook but I will come back for the ‘Caldo de res’ or ‘menudo’.

A lived in the area for 10 years or more and se this business almost every day recently I try it for the first time, this is the close Home made MEXICAN food you can get in this side of the border, the menudo is bland and got no beef feet, tendons, book, or honey com, but got the kick in if you add the pepper and salt, I’ve in there so far 2 times and try the carne asana burrito and the menudo. Next Time I gonna get Merequetenge(Dish of Cactus-tree and Beans) and Caldo de res(Beef Soup)

I seriously cannot comprehend where the 4.5 stars come from. I just left that place very disappointed after reading all of the reviews this place has. First, I ordered a menudo for myself, my husband ordered a quesadilla«especial», and I ordered chorizo con huevo for my son since there was no kids menu. The chorizo was good, it wasn’t the best I’ve ever had but I mean chorizo is chorizo, I don’t know that anyone can screw up chorizo. The menudo came out at the same time and just by looking at it I knew it was going to be a big disappointment. I wasn’t wrong, the serving size was good but there was no color to it at all and when I tasted it it had no flavor. I’m not saying that this place always sells bad menudo but the one I had was just pitiful. I could see that there was seasoning on it so if I could guess it would be that they were running out and they simply added more water to it hence the watered down taste. I tried the tripe itself and it was the regular type, not even honeycomb cuts. I returned it nonetheless. Moving on to the quesadilla, my husband ate two slices and we decided to leave after that. The quesadilla had ham that was so overpowering in salt that he couldn’t finish it. Overall it was a bad experience and we’re not willing to give it a second chance. And as if having crappy food served to us wasn’t enough it seemed that the owner informed one of the customers what I said of the menudo after I returned it because when the customer was leaving he turned to our table and yelled, «I’m shocked»!! Very unprofessional and disrespectful. Waste of money and most important time… we turned around and drove up the 805 to the place I know has actual menudo. This was my family’s experience, take it for what it is and if you still want to give this place a chance then go for it… you might have better luck than we did.

This is truly a hidden gem; the best kept secret in town. The caldo de res and menudo are delicious the flavors are comforting. This is a real family establishment where you can taste tradition in every bite. I highly recommend this restaurant!

The hall mark of a good establishment is the service, and the people here really bring you in and connect with you to make you as happy as they can with their food.

Great food at a dirt cheap price. It has a old time feel to the restaurant. Dont forget cash only! You have to park on the main street. Those are the two downfalls.

This was my first time here and I must say I’m impressed. I found this place searching for a new breakfast place to eat on Unilocal. The reviews are pretty accurate. Located in the heart of San Ysidro, it has an authentic Mexican appeal to it. You will have to find street parking and it’s a small hole in the wall restaurant. They serve chips and salsa before you even order your food which is a plus. Service was fast and friendly, and language barrier was not a problem. I ordered the huevos la Mexicana, good sized portions and came with corn tortillas. Good came pretty quick which is always a plus. I read their menudo and caldo de res is really good here so I will try that the next time. If you’re looking for good Mexican food and want to try something new, take a chance here.

This is one of my husband’s favorite Mexican places. I had the huevos rancheros. I will say that the sauce is one of the best ranchero sauces I have had. However my eggs were over hard and not over easy – something I was disappointed about. I don’t speak Spanish so I didn’t know how to bring it up to the waiter. Nor do I necessarily think he would care. Our water was not filled often – another one of my pet peeves. The food is good but the service is sub par. I think it is mostly due to the language barrier. I’ll go back but will get my translate app out to try and communicate better.

So the only way I would have ever considered eating at a place like this, in a location like this, was because of a friend’s recommendation. It also helped that Unilocal had some high star reviews too, but I mainly went because of my friend Alex telling me about how good the food was here and that the prices were fair. This restaurant is a tiny little hole in the wall and was near impossible for me to find. I swear, I drove up and down San Ysidro blvd about 5 times before I was finally able to spot it behind all of the parked cars on the street and the trees that covered the rest of the front window signs. Now that I had found it, I realized the problem would be parking. Parking on the streets this near to the border is always a nightmare so it took another 3 or 4 times driving up and down the street to find somewhere to park and then take the walk down the block. All in all, I’d have to say the food here is okay but definitely not worth the drive from anywhere other than San Ysidro or Imperial Beach because parking and the neighborhood isn’t exactly pleasant. Also, the food isn’t all that great either and I will begin to explain why I say this. First, the chips they served us tasted stale as if they had fried them yesterday and didn’t want to throw them away. Then the only salsa we were served was in a salsa bottle so we had to squeeze the salsa onto our chips instead of dipping them into a salsa bowl which would have been more convenient. Next, I ordered the chile relleno plate and she ordered the caldo de res. I sort of liked how the egg flour dipping mixture still tasted a little raw on the chiles but then again I could see how others would be completely turned off by it as was my girlfriend when I forced her to take a bite. No big deal if they didn’t cook the batter all the way for me but then again I questioned if this was freshly cooked chile rellenos or ones they had made days before and that’s why the breading seemed to be so soggy. As for the caldo de res, it was served cold and my girlfriend had to ask them to heat it up more in the microwave. Not the most authentic Mexican restaurant if you need to ask for your soup to be reheated in the microwave but then again it did have all of the staple ingredients in it to be officially classified as caldo de res in my book. The one thing that drove me absolutely crazy about this place was after we had left I noticed on the receipt the owner had charged us 2 soda cans but I had only drank water as I normally do. I could see how it might have been a simple mistake but then again I also believe in the sinister reality of greedy business owners who want to squeeze as much money out of patrons as they possibly can.

This is my kind of Mexican place to eat. It’s a little hole in the wall, the people that run it speak Spanish as their first language, and they have salsa that will actually make you sweat a little. The beef burrito i has was huge. I ordered a taco as well and really didn’t need to, but I so love tacos. And theirs are nothing short of perfect. They did great at leaving the cilantro off of everything like i asked them to. And the salsa has a good flavor and isn’t loaded with cilantro. And the red salsa has a slightly smoky hint to it and doesn’t taste burnt at all. The food here is definitely Mexican and authentic. I think they may American it up just a touch but they never lose sight of what great Mexican food is supposed to be. This is definitely not a place that is gourmet[y] like a few others I’ve ran across. You’d swear that someones 80yr old grandmother is in the kitchen fixing the food they server there! I will continue to make special trips down there just for lunch! Parking is a little hectic as it’s on the street only or around a corner. But it is totally worth circling the block a couple of times. Went back [big surprise I know] on 4−6−13 with the wife. And had the burrito colorado plate. It was highly delicious and amazing flavorful. I highly recommend it!

I went to eat here because I saw it had good ratings on Unilocal so I gave it a try. Prices are great not expensive at all, food is good I tried the caldo de res and it was d’ lish almost like my mom makes it I defenetly recomend. My suegra had the enchiladas she said they were good. So… if you’re craving Mexican food and you don’t want to spend a lot of $$ this is the place. It’s satisfyingly good.

San Ysidro’s hidden GEM! I’m so glad I found this place weeks ago. See, I was crossing the border an early morning and I realized that I hardly ever eat in San Ysidro. So, as always, I turned to Unilocal and this was one of the first places that came up. The moment I walked in I felt a home vibe with home cooked authenticity of Mexican originality. To start off, they have four specials for $ 3.25 from 8:00am to 10:00am Monday through Friday. All four plates come with beans, rice, tortillas(corn or flour) and your choice of dish. They also have daily menudo and caldo de res. If it’s not on the menu, just let them know what you want, and they’ll make it happen. All the prices are dirt cheap!!! All the plates, the rice, the beans the corn and flour tortillas are home made! You really can’t find any other place that sells amazingly delicious home made Mexican food at these low prices. These last couple of times I’ve gone, I’ve ordered chlaquiles(red), breakfast burritos and a vegetable omelette with rice and beans. All three plates I’ve had, have been SUPERB. And, they always use white cheese on all their plates. They refuse to use cheddar cheese. Nice! The customer service is fast and good. They’re extremely polite. Just keep in mind, cash only.
